Anzia Yezierska, Bread Givers, Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street and Jeanette Winterson, Oranges are Not the Only Fruit are all female coming of age stories from different racial/ethnic/gender points of view and different time periods. The first is a Jewish immigrant story, the second an African-American search for identity, the third a Chicana struggle for self-definition, and the fourth a struggle between faith and sexual identity.
- How do race, class, ethnicity, and gender play a part in these female stories of the struggle for self-definition?
- How do the heroines grow in relation to themselves and the society around them?
- How are these lessons relevant to the students today?
