how organizational culture can be used to help assess and evaluate organizational needs, develop interventions for different levels, and implement change.

Organizational culture is so ubiquitous that it affects all areas of group life. Though organizational culture is not always immediately obvious in organizations, its outcomes (e.g., turnover, morale, productivity) can be. Some workplaces require employees to wear business attire whereas others allow employees to dress casually. In some workplaces, formal address is used and in others, people use first names regardless of position. Both examples reflect organizational norms, or “the way we do things around here,” otherwise known asorganizational culture. Organizational culture may be subtle yet pervasive and may have a profound effect on employee attitudes and behavior.

Organizational culture affects each of the levels of organizational assessment: individual, small group, large group, intergroup, and organization. As an organizational consultant or practitioner, it is beneficial to have a toolbox of assessments for organizational evaluation for each of these levels. By assessing organizational culture, practitioners and consultants can then develop evidence-based interventions to address the issues identified by the assessment and evaluation processes.

Consider how the information above may be applied to the Greenvale Correctional Facility case study that follows.

GreenvaleCorrectional Facility is alarge, privately-owned, medium-securityprisonin the southeastern United States. The prison opened in 1988, and, until recently, it employed 300 security, operational, facilities, maintenance, healthcare, and administrative employees.

The prison’ssalaryandbenefit structurearecomparable to other prison systems around the country. However, Greenvale is currently experiencing significant attrition, creating an unsafe and unstable environment, both for the inmates and remaining employees. Staff has reduced from 300 to 210 employees during the last 6 months, and attempts to recruit and hire new staff have been challenging. Online recruitment, employee sourcing, and participation in various job fairs have not created a plentiful base oftrained, experiencedemployment candidates, and efforts to retain existing personnel have been unsuccessful. Exit interview data point to leadership issues, and poor working conditions.

Prison leadership is comprised of Warden Bob Jones, who started at Greenvale when it first opened; Sergeant Dave Lee,the senior-levelcorrectional leader with over 15 years of experience; and Officer Stan Phillips,a correctional managerwho joined the leadership team in 2015. All three leaders work collaboratively, but they tend to remain siloed away from the other employees. All ofthe prison’s communications are top-down and authoritative; the leadership team believes this style is necessary given the work environment and inherent risks involved. While the team believes they are fostering a management-by-objectives culture, many employees feel excluded from the process and perceive more of an in-group/out-group mindset. Consequently, several recent attempts to implement new policies and procedures have met with resistancefrom the current employees.

To prepare:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources. Reflect on how organizational culture can be used to help assess and evaluate organizational needs, develop interventions for different levels, and implement change.
  • Read and analyze the Greenvale Correctional Facility case. Greenvale is a large, privately-owned correctional facility facing staff-retention issues.

By Day 3

Post a response to the following:

Identify what you believe are Greenvale Correctional Facility’s key issues. Explain your assessment process and the factors you considered during your analysis. Be sure to include how organizational culture affects assessment in organizations.

Instructions

Use the CSU Online Library Attached and review a scholarly article found in a peer-reviewed journal related to HR selection methods, analyzing work, designing jobs, or HR planning. In peer-reviewed journals, the articles were reviewed by other professionals in the field to ensure the accuracy and quality of the articles, which is ideal when writing an article critique.

Research tip: When researching using the databases, you can limit your search to only peer-reviewed articles. To do this, look for the phrase “limit results,” and select “peer-reviewed articles.”

Once you have selected your article, follow the below criteria:

  • There is a minimum requirement of 500 words for the article critique.
  • Write a summary of the article. This should be one to three paragraphs in length, depending on the length of the article. Include the purpose for the article, how research was conducted, the results, and other pertinent information from the article.
  • Identify the selection criteria and methods and how they relate to hiring at the organization in the article.
  • Discuss the meaning or implication of the results of the study that the article covers. This should be one to two paragraphs. This is where you offer your opinion on the article. Discuss any flaws with the article, how you think it could have been better, and what you think it all means.
  • Write one paragraph discussing how the author could expand on the results, what the information means in the big picture, what future research should focus on, or how future research could move the topic forward. Discuss how knowledge in the area could be expanded.

Any sources used, including the textbook and the article, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations in APA format.

Assume that an unfair labor practice charge was filed against your company by several employees and three prospective employees. See the form linked below indicating the charge, which outlines the scenario below:

FORM NLRB-501: Case 4689-3

On July 29, 2016, Delphi Golf, Inc. and the union entered a collective bargaining agreement. The majority of the company’s employees covered by the agreement had not designated the union as their collective-bargaining representative. The agreement contains a union-security clause requiring employees who are members in good standing of the union to maintain their membership in good standing and all other employees to become members of the union on or before the 31st day following the effective date of the agreement or the date of their hire. The union instructed Delphi Golf, Inc. not to employ three servers for restaurant positions in the company because the servers were not members of the union. The company is an employer within the meaning of Section 2(2) of the act engaged in commerce within the meaning of Section 2(6) and (7) of the act.

Explain in a two-page essay the process and steps your company will have to take to defend this action. Explain the defenses to the action and if the union employees have valid claims. What actions by the employer should have been done differently, if at all? What actions by the union should have been done differently? Who, if anyone, is liable?

You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying APA style citations.

Gender Influences at Work

Assignment: Gender Influences at Work

Ideally, people select and pursue their careers based on their personal interests, their abilities, and their desire to make a contribution in/to a particular arena. However, the ideal is not always realized for a variety of reasons. One such reason is the presence of gender stereotyping related to aptitude for a specific career or skill, jobs, and careers, in general. Gender stereotyping may begin in school with girls and boys who are encouraged to pursue careers that stereotypically appear to be more fitting for one gender or the other. This type of stereotyping often results in discrimination and harassment in the school or training for the field, discrimination in the workplace, closed doors for some types of employment, and limited career opportunities.

Psychologists have posed many justifications for the stereotyping that impacts career choice and career success. It may be that boys and girls are directed differently to specific careers beginning in early education. It may be that parents influence their children toward or away from specific career paths by their expectations, dialogue, and even toys they give their children to play with. It may be the stereotyping and resulting discrimination related to training and education that influences the career paths of men and women. It may be the influence from society in general related to what are considered to be appropriate roles for both men and women.

Additional gender-related challenges exist once men and women get to the workplace. Though discrimination and sexual harassment are often seen as women’s issues, men also experience discrimination and sexual harassment, especially in typically female-dominated occupations such as teaching, childcare, nursing, and some administrative positions. And while there may be a reduction in the occurrence of stereotyping, women historically have experienced discrimination that results in not being hired or promoted to upper management positions, unequal pay for equal work, and “glass ceilings” in many fields including health care, engineering, science, math, and protective services, just to name a few.

Psychologists continue to look for answers about why men and women behave differently and are treated differently in the workplace. Common explanations include the differences in communication styles often seen in men and women, issues associated with power struggles in the workplace, and societal expectations regarding roles of men and women.

To prepare for this assignment:

Review Chapter 12 in the course text,Gender: Psychological Perspectives. Focus on the gender-related differences and similarities in issues related to career selection, career success, and the work environment.
Review the articles, “The Compassionate Sexist? How Benevolent Sexism Promotes and Undermines Gender Equality in the Workplace,” and “Gender Inequalities in the Workplace: The Effects of Organizational Structures, Processes, Practices, and Decision Makers’ Sexism.”
Think about one specific career path, such as architecture, engineering, science, nursing, business management, etc. Conduct research on the current gender-related statistics for the career path you have selected.
Consider the following questions, using the Week 6 Optional Resources or other resources of your choosing:
What is the workplace like, and how might workplace conditions, requirements, and/or environmental factors influence or be influenced by each gender?
Is the field typically a male- or female-dominated one? Why?
Is there a salary difference between the genders?
Think about the following questions:
How and why might boys and girls be directed differently to the career path you selected and researched?
What challenges might each gender face in getting a job in this area?
Once individuals enter this career, how might men and women be treated differently and how might they behave differently? What are the unique challenges each gender must address in order to succeed in this area?
The assignment (3–5 pages):

Select a career path (e.g., architecture, engineering, nursing, business management, etc.).
Analyze the impact that gender has in:
The career choice itself, including gender stereotyping within that career
Other factors that might influence career choice, obstacles to entering the career, and factors that impact career success
The work setting within that career, including factors that might lead to discrimination, communication differences that impact workplace success, issues related to power, and rates of sexual harassment

integration of psychology and theology.

As we consider the broad topic of integration of science (psychology, in our case) and theology, consider this conversation that a student had with his pastor:

Pastor: I know you are studying counseling at Liberty University. As you know, I received training in theology, and I well remember Jay Adams’ famous statement: “Psychology is just sinful human beings sinfully thinking about sinful human beings.” I am deeply concerned about the wisdom of pursuing this degree at Liberty. Personally, I think psychology is a secular “mumbo jumbo.”

The Pastor continues: In my opinion, all psychological problems are simply problems of faith, and should be addressed through prayer, repentance, and seeking counsel from the Holy Spirit. After all, you, as a sinner, cannot be expected to help other sinful people–can you? Can psychology really be integrated with theology? What’s your opinion?”

How would you respond to your pastor? In your dialogue with your pastor (“Pastor, thanks for allowing me to answer your concerns. Personally, I agree/disagree. . . “) include the following:

  1. Explain why you agree or disagree with Adams’ quote, based on your understanding of the course materials. Adequately justify your position considering both Adams’ presuppositions and implications for Christian counseling. How does your own worldview largely determine your answer? What does the quote say about sources of knowledge, per Entwistle’s discussion? Your answer will indicate which of the models of integration you support.
  2. Review the reasons supporting the integration of psychology and theology. Based on your thoughtful analysis, what is the one best argument for attempting to integrate the two disciplines?

Make sure to justify and support your answer. Where appropriate, use in-text citations to support your assertions. Feel free to actually create a dialogue with your pastor, or provide your answer in a narrative. For all your discussion board work for this module/week, make sure you draw upon the textbook and presentations to support your arguments, as well as Scripture if appropriate. For your initial post, use citations with at least two sources to “back up” your statements. One source should be scripture from the Holy Bible.
