Read Articles and write a 2 page paper

Read all materials from http://www.sjsu.edu/people/patricia.backer/history… and 2 support readings in the files.

Choose one of the following technological developments that were discussed in the web tutorial: the mechanical clock, gunpowder, the Great or Jersey wheel, printing, or the compass.

Write an essay that addresses the following topics. This should be an integrated essay that has coherence for the whole piece and connections between paragraphs. You are expected to quote from your sources and use examples in your discussion. Be specific and cite specific details either from the background reading, the web tutorial or your own research. Also, you should make sure to cite your sources in your response (in-text citation) and include a reference list at the end of your essay.

Higher credit will be given for responses that show evidence of a systematic and comprehensive understanding of the topics involved. The narrative portion of your essay must be at least 500 words (approximately 2 pages double-spaced). You need to address all of the following questions:

  • Discuss the history of the technology from its early beginnings to the Renaissance. Please discuss at least three different events in the history of your chosen technology.
  • Describe one force (e.g., historical, cultural, social, economic, political) that affected the development of the technology.
  • How did the development and use of the technology affect Europe in the Middle Ages?
  • Overall, how did the technology affect the United States?

Grading

The major difference between Unit 2 class activity and that of Unit 1: you need to write an integrated essay to answer the questions instead of writing separate answers. This means that there should be connections between paragraphs and some coherence for the whole essay, but you should also use separate paragraphs to answer each of the questions. Please read the instruction and the Rubric carefully before you start the essay. Essentially, you need an introduction, multiple body paragraphs (with each paragraph addressing a specific question) and a conclusion. Choose one technology to focus on, and start each body paragraph with a topic sentence that indicates the main point of the paragraph. Cite your sources to support your points.

Submit your essay multiple times to Criterion and fix all fixable errors before you submit it to Canvas.

You are encouraged to review the rubric for this assignment and make sure that you answer each question in detail and with specifics and examples. Correct use of English is a fundamental requirement for your papers to be graded. If errors in English make it difficult for a grader to understand your sentences, or excessively slow down the grader to mark your technical errors, your paper will be returned to you for further work on its English, and your grade for the paper will be deferred until it is resubmitted with corrected English. If your assignment is returned for an excessive number of grammatical errors, you will be allowed to rewrite and resubmit it within two weeks of the original return date. If not resubmitted by the date set by your instructor, you will receive a zero (0) for the writing assignment.
