Diabetes is a metabolic disease that affects how the body uses blood sugar, or glucose, for energy. Adolescents with diabetes should try to control their blood sugar, because blood sugar levels that are high or very low can be dangerous to an individual’s health. Managing diabetes can be difficult for adolescents, as they cannot produce or respond to insulin, which is often used to manage diabetes. Managing diabetes also is difficult for adolescents because they may be encountering many new experiences and learning to juggle many adult responsibilities. There have been many advances and scientific breakthroughs, such as oral medications and insulin pens; yet, treatment still can be overwhelming (Hood, Huestis, Maher, Butler, Volkening, & Laffel, 2006; Schreiner, Brow, & Phillips, 2000). While families may try to help adolescents manage their diabetes, there often is a need for independence at this age. How do you determine the appropriate age for an adolescent to self-manage his or her diabetes? How might families assist in the self-management of diabetes?

With these thoughts in mind:

1) a brief description of the age in which you consider it appropriate for adolescents to begin self-management of their diabetes and

2) explain why. Then,

3) explain two potential barriers to adolescents managing their diabetes. Finally,

4) describe one behavioral strategy a family may use to promote the self-management of diabetes in an adolescent and

5) explain why it might be effective.

In her essay, “Could Love Be Like a Heatwave” Janet Levin argues against the views of people like Thomas Nagel in “What is it like to Be a Bat” and David Chalmers in “The Mystery of Consciousness.” She argues that “what it is like”, for example to see red or fell pain does not require having experience of such sensations, qualitative states of consciousness it does not require an ability to recognize such experiences as of a particular kind. Mere theoretical, factual or conceptual knowledge is, she argues sufficient to know what it is like to have such experiences/mental states. She allows that experience is helpful, even special(p.259) but not necessary. “What makes it special, however, is not that the experience contributes a chunk of knowledge that could not be acquired in some other way, but that it contributes such knowledge as it does so efficiently (p.259).” Levin makes here argument by appeal to examples: a blind person who can learn what visual size and shape are by appeal to what (facts, theories, concepts) they know about tactile size and shape; aliens that have no, but want, understanding of what it is like for us to feel pain; as well as Nagel’s example of what it is like to be a bat and Chalmers’ use of an example of Mary super-scientist who knows everything there is to know about red but has never experienced it.

Try to spell out more (more than is already described above) of Levin’s argument. Having spelled out her argument a bit more consider the brief article “Scientists Have Found a Woman Whose Eyes Have a Whole New Type of Colour Receptor” . What evidence does it provide for Levin on the one hand, or Chalmers and Nagel on the other?

Our second formal written assignment is going to allow you to choose among 5 different TED talks. You’ll watch the video and then write a paper.

Hopefully you all have been exposed to “Ted Talks.” This is how Ted Talks describes it’s organization:

TED is a nonpartisan nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 110 languages.

Your paper should be 2 pages. That means a FULL two pages, not 1.5 pages.

Answer the following questions:

1. What’s the title and/or topic of the Ted Talk you chose? How long was it?

2. Who was the speaker in the Ted Talk you chose?

3. What is the speakers’ background, or what makes them qualified to talk on their particular topic?

4. What was the main idea or main argument of the talk?

5. Tell me about at least two ideas that you learned from this talk, and explain why those ideas/points are important.
