english 101 project 1
This writing project focuses upon your opinions about what it means to be a member of a government that is set up as a democracy. What behaviors should be embraced by members of such a system of rule? If you wish, include personal examples, perhaps something you are you doing to lend your help to the running of the country? This is a far more complex and diverse writing concept than you might think. (I can see someone writing that one should not vote, ever, and this is why. I can see someone writing about why focusing only on one’s own accumulation of wealth is the best strategy to helping the country and here’s why. I can see someone writing about volunteering one’s time to help others is a good strategy to helping the country. I can list 1,000 other strategies to focus an essay around given this topic. Don’t assume it’s designed to have you write about “we need to vote” or something obvious like that. (That would be a decent strategy to start building an essay around, though.)
Our play An Enemy of the People explores the individual’s role in society. If we see a wrong, should we try to right it like Dr. Stockmann? What might this cost us personally? Whistle-blowers are in the news today. Maybe we have an obligation to act–peacefully–at times. But how and in what ways and why?
You’ll have to quote from the play at least one time, and find a way to use the quote to develop/support some idea you are working on.
Other than that, there are no outside sources required, but feel free to use one or more if you wish. You do not need to worry about a works cited page, but include some information at the end to help me find the sources you may have used. This aspect is not a grade impacting one. I’m not asking for MLA works cited pages.
