According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 23 million Americans are currently addicted to alcohol and/or other drugs. Yet, the use of the term addiction is sometimes confusing. It is often used interchangeably with dependence, either physiological or psychological in nature. Why do people get physiologically and psychologically addicted to drugs? What are the main risk factors that can contribute to someone’s risk for drug abuse and addiction?
