Final Project: Using Visuals to Communicate a Message

Visual media can have a significant impact on how effectively a message is communicated. Appropriate and strategic visuals can inspire the audience, lend clarity to a message, and, in general, say things that words alone cannot.

Throughout this course, you decided on a message to communicate, determined the most effective platform or medium for that message, and selected the most appropriate visuals to support the message. For the Final Project, incorporate a minimum of three different types of visual design, such as typography, graphics, and images to deliver your intended message. Note that if you did not create the visual, you must include a reference for the visual(s) contained in the project.

For this project, use the concepts you’ve learned in this course to effectively apply visuals to a business-related message. Below, you will find just a few examples of how visuals can be utilized to communicate a message in the business setting. Feel free to use any of the examples listed below, or if you choose to select examples not included on the list, be sure to request instructor approval prior to completing the Final Project.

Examples of Business Communication

How Each Example Might Look for Your Assignment

Presentation on department achievements

PowerPoint slides with visuals such as video clips, images, and charts and associated speech in the Speaker’s Notes section at the bottom..

Print advertisement for your own business

Word document or PDF version of an advertisement, complete with appropriate image(s), embedded (or links to) video clips, composition, typography, and company logo and website.

Training materials on your job responsibilities

Word document or PDF version of job instructions using typography, composition, and relevant images and video to promote clarity.

Company website

Word document, PowerPoint, or PDF mock-up that illustrates what you would want your website to look like. Complete with appropriate images, effective composition and color usage, company logo, video clips, and shapes representing where the buttons would be.

Your Final Project must contain aspects of each element discussed in the course as it applies to your example communication piece. It must use appropriate typefaces, deliver a clear message, and have clear brand identity. It must also use an appropriate composition of graphics, photos, video, or other visual media. In addition to the text, your paper must contain a minimum of five scholarly sources, two of which must be from the Ashford University Library.

In your five- to seven-page paper (not including the title and reference pages or the three visual media examples), be sure to address the following:

  • Discuss the rationale behind choosing each of the three media elements and support your discussion with concepts from the course material.
  • Explain why the media elements contained in your Final Project deliver the message you intended to communicate.
  • Describe the intent of the message.
  • Apply a minimum of five concepts from the course material to support your choice of media elements. For example you may use concepts such as visual literacy, perception, visual marketing, storytelling, design, branding, social media, communication theories, or any of the other concepts presented during the course. Be sure to discuss the relationship of the concepts to the media elements that you have chosen.

You have looked at potential contracts your company will need. It’s now time to focus on the employment contracts. There are two important contracts related to employees. One is an employment contract (some may not sign on). The other is an employee handbook. There is usually a contract that follows the handbook where the employee acknowledges that they received one, read it, and will follow it. The handbook itself is not the contract, but it is a set of “rules” you have agreed to follow.

Therefore, the handbook is just as important as the initial employment contract.

Explore employment contracts.

Do research in the library database, internet search, and ask some friends. Try to dig deeper and determine if you will need employee contracts. Find out what the benefits and detriments are to having one verses not having one.

Research what the common language is. Which clauses are usually involved? Are there any covenants not to compete?

Do you agree with the advice on Nolo? http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/written-employment-contracts-pros-cons-30193.html

What are the precautions business owners should take when getting legal advice from the internet?

Research employee handbooks.

Review The SBA’s Employee Guidelines

Review several employee handbooks.

Here is an example: http://www.valvesoftware.com/company/Valve_Handbook_LowRes.pdf

  1. Design and draft an employment contract to use in your new company.
  2. Design and draft an Employee Handbook.

Module 5 Discussion: Teaching and Transference

Laurence B. Boggess – Shifting Perspectives

I have been teaching in face-to-face classrooms at the K-12 and university levels for over 30 years. But it wasn’t until I began teaching online seven years ago that I realized what master online teachers already know: effective online teaching improves teaching in the face-to-face classroom.

This realization starts with the observation that online teaching is fundamentally different than face-to-face teaching due to distance, asynchronicity, and the digital environment. Further, course “authoring” is radically different than writing a syllabus and showing up week after week to make it come alive with words, assignments, and activities. The World Campus model is built on asynchronous learning, and for that learning to be effective, the course author must carefully choose, long before the course begins, every word of every week’s lesson, every assignment and assessment, and every video, reading, discussion question, direction, and grading scheme. The course must integrate content and design so tightly and with such quality that students can come to their lessons each week and navigate their learning. This front-loading not only benefits students but future instructors who “inherit” the course. These instructors can focus on teaching the content, sharing their expertise and knowledge, guiding discussions, assessing work, and otherwise personalizing the pre-written course.

In short, the online teacher needs to have his or her act together way longer before the first week of class. This is not to say I didn’t have my act together as a face-to-face classroom teacher. I did, but I also had the luxury of driving to class thinking about what exactly I wanted to say that day, improvising and changing an assignment, diverting to a new topic or chasing down tangents–all feeling free to do so but not always sure, upon reflection, I served the students well. I could think I was teaching up a storm, but, frankly, teaching was mostly about me. There were classes that went by when I did not hear from every student. I could not tell you with certainty that my students were learning in every class session.

Since teaching online, I am more mindful about the clarity of my instructions, the alignment of assignments with assessments and student learning outcomes, and the integrity of my course throughlines. I am more attentive to hearing every student’s voice in every class as is mandatory in online learning. I am more likely to use tools and apps from my online courses such as self and student-made videos, social media and discussion forums such as Yammer, flipped lessons, and open educational resources. I’ve also become more mindful of assigning group work, discerning between group assignments (division of labor) and team assignments (true collaborations and syntheses) — a distinction essential to get right online.

Ultimately, the most radical change to my face-to-face teaching is a shift of perspective. My highest priority now is not my own teaching but my students’ learning.

How do you think your online teaching will influence your face-to-face teaching and vice versa?

dynamic decision w2a2

Your organization is located in one of the largest metropolitan areas of the nation. Your organization hosts and supplies services to all the courts in the United States, including Guam and Puerto Rico. The power grid in your building is no longer able to handle the demand of power. They need to be relocated to other areas. The proposed areas are San Diego and Ashburn, Virginia. It would be more economical to fork-lift the entire server rooms at once to the proposed locations as opposed to moving a few pieces at a time. Additionally, the vendor who designs and installs the servers at the new locations is rigid on the due dates for receiving the planning drawings and will only build the designs per drawing specifications. Even if the vendor knows something is incorrect, they only build per written and signed off specifications. A consultant on the project knows that something is wrong but he does not notify anyone of the problem. A month later, when another vendor goes to install the power to the servers they notice that the server racks are off. The consultant calls back to the office to notify his supervisor that the vendor will not deliver power and lets it slip out that he knew about the potential problem a month ago. Each time the power vendor goes to the location, it costs more than $23,000 per day, full day’s work or not. The supervisor is angry because this could have been corrected over one month ago.

Based on the scenario described above, create a 2- to 3-page Microsoft Word document that includes:

  • An explanation of how you would handle the given situation.
  • An analysis, identification, and reasoning of the theory that relates to this scenario.
  • A description of how the framing process could affect this situation and whether things have turned around to the positive side.
  • An analysis, identification, and reasoning for the person accountable for this situation, assuming that firing the consultant is not an option.
  • An analysis and description of the kinds of check lists that should be in place to prevent the situation from happening in the future.
