benchmark assaignment

In this course, you will be complete a 2-part assignment in which you conduct research about a population of focus, develop a PICOT statement, and write a Literature Review. The PICOT statement and Literature Review you write in this course can be used for your evidence-based practice project in the next course so be sure to select an issue you want to continue working on in your next course.

PICOT (Population/Problem, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Time to achieve the outcome) is a method that helps clarify the qualities needed to create a good question out of a practice issue or problem affecting the population of focus. Additionally, the information derived from a good PICOT makes it easier to perform a literature search in order to find translational research sources that can be used to address the clinical problem.

Use a national, state or local population health care database to research indicators of disparity. Choose a mortality/morbidity indicator to identify a clinical problem or issue that you want to explore pertaining to a population of focus. Use this indicator to begin to formulate a PICOT and conduct research on the population.

Write a 750-1,000-word paper that analyzes your research and focuses on the population you have chosen. Describe the population’s demographics and health concerns, and explain how nursing science, health determinants, and epidemiologic, genomic, and genetic data may impact population health management for the selected population. Provide an overview of a potential solution for solving the health issue related to your population and the intended PICOT statement. Describe how the solution incorporates health policies and goals that support health care equity for the population of focus.

You are required to cite three to five sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Needs Assessment: External Factors that Impact Curriculum and Program Development

When a potential student is deciding on attending a new college or university, there are many factors that could change that decision.  The desire to attend a nationally accredited school can play a large part in the decision-making process.  Potential employers know that accredited institutions undergo rigorous processes to achieve and maintain the high quality standards set by accrediting bodies that looks great on a student’s resume.  During this weeks post, I will post a brief description of the setting my team selected for the course project.  I will explain which accrediting body or agency they have accreditation from and why.  Then I will identify the standards I selected and explain if the setting meets the outlined expectations.

Accrediting Body

The northeast region team has selected Seton Hall University for this course’s project.  The main campus of Seton Hall is located in South Orange, New Jersey with their health and sciences campus in Clifton and Nutley, New Jersey.  This university has accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, or CCNE.  This agency is the national voice for academic nursing education and works to, influence the nursing profession to improve healthcare, establish quality standards for nursing education while assisting schools in implementing them, and promotes public support for research, practice, and professional nursing education (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2012).  It is the responsibility of the educators in the facility to make sure that the curriculum components such as the mission, vision, philosophy, organizational framework, student-learning outcomes, and the program of study are well outlined and taught appropriately (Keating & DeBoor, 2018).  Seton Hall continues to use this accrediting agency to make sure that their education is up to date and they are preparing students for the world of nursing.

Standards

The CCNE accreditation process is based on core values, I will discuss a few of them in this post and describe if Seton Hall meets the expectations.  The first is to foster an educational climate that supports program students, graduates, and faculty in their pursuit of lifelong learning (Billings & Halstead, 2016).  According to the Seton Hall University website (2019), students and faculty are encouraged to pursue their education and continue learning with multiple graduate nursing programs, graduate courses, doctoral programs, and certificate courses.  The second standard is to encourage programs to develop graduates who are effective professionals and socially responsible citizens (Billings & Halstead, 2016).  Seton Hall University obliges with this standard in a few different ways.  They offer multiple clinical settings to allow the student to become an effective professional, and they have classes discussing legal issues, research, leadership, and management.  Giving a student these tools will provide them with the skills to be socially responsible citizens as well as effective professionals.  The final standard is to facilitate and engage is self-assessment.  The University has a department whose sole focus is on self-assessment.  They consistently perform assessments on programs in the university and recommend improvements that should be made within each program (Seton Hall University, 2019).  As we continue to explore this university’s curriculum, I will continue to evaluate how Seton Hall is doing as a nursing program, and see what changes need to be made.  The CCNE standards discussed are currently being met, but there is much more to explore, and there are always improvements that could be made.

                                  Mission, Vision, and Personal Goals

I have been a nurse for five years and spent a great deal of time thinking about my future role in nursing. I debated the pros and cons from the available list of master’s degree specialty tracks in nursing. At first, I thought that I might do nursing leadership as I enjoy leadership, but I changed my mind after realizing that I could lead change in any master’s degree role. I am passionate about psychiatry and decided on the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner specialty track.

Over the course of a few months, I researched different universities and was drawn to Walden University. I liked that they offered a master’s degree in my specialty track as many universities have moved to the doctorate level. Also, I noticed that Walden had all the required accreditations that I was looking for in a university. After reading the Walden School of Nursing (SON) mission and vision statement, I realized that we have commonalities. According to the Walden University SON (2012), their mission is to thoroughly prepare graduates to transform society. The mission statement speaks to me as I would like to transform individuals and the community by providing high quality, cost effective, and relevant care.

Also, the Walden University program outcomes state that graduates will “apply their learning to specific problems and challenges in their workplace and professional settings” (Walden University, 2011, para. 5). This statement aligns with my objectives. I would like to earn more than a degree; I would like to apply knowledge gained, synthesize new practices, and implement it into nursing practice.

Incorporation of Social Change

Positive social change is a process for improving the daily lives of individuals, communities, and society. According to Walden University (2011), positive social change results in an enhancement of human and social conditions. I concur with this position and I would like to do the same in my community. I have taken my nursing practice as far as I can with my current education and scope. My plan for positive social change in my future practice is to look at an individual holistically to figure out how I can address social conditions preventing effective treatment. For example, “stable housing has been linked to recovery from addictions” (Knickman & Kovner, 2015, p. 165). This statement validates an existing hypothesis synthesized in my daily nursing practice. A lack of housing for chemically dependent individuals results in frequent inpatient readmissions. Positive social change will occur if the above-mentioned social condition can be addressed.
