The five journal entries are due on Wednesday, November 20, at the beginning of class. If you submit those entries when you return from Thanksgiving Break on December 2, twenty points will be deducted from your grade. Do not submit these entries to Safe Assign. Submit the five entries in a folder.
Each entry must be a minimum of two-thirds of a page. The entries must have a heading (MLA style), a title (not the title of the essay), a topic sentence in which you include the author’s name and the title of the essay. The body of each paragraph must integrate one quote from the essay. Each entry must be typed in the MLA style and use correct grammar and punctuation. Check for fragments, comma splices, fused sentences, and sentences that are not clearly worded.
The first entry is your reaction to Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue,” pp. 697-703.
The second entry is Mark Twain’s “Two Ways of Looking at a River,” a handout. In this entry your are to write your own experience of gaining something, but losing something in return.
The third entry is “The Irish Famine,” a handout. In this entry you are to discuss the side that you believe is right–the Irish or the British. Remember that you must give your reasons.
The fourth entry is “Neat People vs. Sloppy People,” a handout. In this entry give the reasons why you consider yourself a neat person, a sloppy person, or both a neat and sloppy person. You must give several examples.
The fifth entry is argumentative. You may choose one of the following essays: Joanna McKay’s “Organ Sales Will Save Lives,” pp. 157-162; Nicholas Kristof,’s “Our Blind Spot about Guns,” pp.162-165; Molly Worthen’s “U Can’t Talk to Ur Professor Like This,” pp.165-170. In this entry, your assignment to to discuss why you agree or disagree with the essay.
The company from last week (Sephora) has hired you to reorganize a department within their company based on your Executive Summary. (You may also choose a department of a company you are familiar with from previous experience.) Investigate the department more thoroughly and write a plan to improve the department. Recommend actions and next steps. Include a system to list and quantitatively score competing alternative solutions. One example may be a table that lists all of the recommended actions in one column, with additional ‘expected results’ and ‘grade’ columns. In the grade column you can assign a number to how you think each potential action may meet the expected result and include this summary in your plan.

In this activity, you will analyze and study the subject presented and compose a written response addressing the questions posed. The response should involve research of the subject identified below. You will also practice the first few stages of essay writing which includes organizing ideas into main topics and subtopics in outline format. The final deliverable for this assignment is an outline of an essay in development. You will not turn in a completed essay, just the outline. Prior to starting, read the entire assignment below.

Write the Outline
1. For the remainder of the outline, the content must contain only your words. Do not quote, paraphrase or borrow content from resources. Close all source materials before starting. Again, use only your words here. This is not about trying to sound like an expert. Just organize your thoughts and represent them on the outline.
2. Enter your thesis statement at the top of the first page in sentence format.
3. As noted in this helpful video, think of a thesis statement as a one-sentence summary of the essay. Watch the video Writing an Effective Thesis Statement (YouTube – 1:45). (Links to an external site.)
4. Enter a blank space for the introduction as shown in the following video. It is suggested to write the introduction after the body and conclusion sections are complete. Many authors prefer this method so you are asked to give it a try here.
5. Using the outline format, enter the main ideas. Then under each, enter your subtopics. Be sure to use sentence formatting as shown in the example (this should not be paragraphs). Feel free to delete the existing outline prior to starting. In case you need a reminder, view how to create an outline (Links to an external site.) in Word.
6. Add a conclusion section – this should also be in outline format.
7. The final outline must be no less than 1.5 pages long. A little longer than that (i.e. 2 pages) is fine, but the response should not be less than 1.5 pages.
Computer Input-Output Technologies that Link Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers
Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Eurocontrol (Europe’s FAA) actively research, experiment with and deploy technologies in order to create a safer and more efficient airspace system.
An example is Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC), which in addition to the existing radio, creates a second channel for communication between pilots and air traffic controllers (ATC). Instead of keying the radio, ATC and pilots type instructions and requests and send via text messaging. This reduces ATC workload and frees up the radio channels for important communications.
