Guidelines for JSTOR Review Assignment

For this assignment, you are to read a journal article about a topic related to a regional topic within the context of the class, and you are asked to use articles from the JSTOR database. Unfortunately, Grossmont College does not have JSTOR available from its library, but some of you may have used JSTOR from institutions like Mesa, Palomar and Southwestern Colleges, in addition to San Diego State or Cal State San Marcos. Therefore I will provide you with an ample selection of articles that I have downloaded from Palomar College’s JSTOR database. All you need to do is pick any of the articles for your review. Just click the “Files” section from the Canvas class menu, and open the folder that says “JSTOR articles.” In the folder are several subfolders with topics arranged by nation, in alphabetical order. Starting this week (the third week of the semester), I will provide one subfolder per week, with ten articles in each folder, starting with Argentina. Nations such as Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, and Colombia will follow right after that. The articles are in PDF format and labeled by the topic of the article, so just browse the collection of articles before you make your final selection. You do not need to notify me of your article choice, just pick any one of the articles in any of those subfolders, and you’re ready to roll!

The due date for this review is Friday, December 6 at 11:59 PM. Late papers will be accepted for one week only and will be assessed with a full grade deduction. The report is to be 5-7 pages in length. Please be sure to use both a title page and works cited page. (title and works cited pages do not count toward the overall page count of your review) You are also encouraged to follow the MLA or Chicago formats to develop this report. Please double-space your review. This review will count as 15% toward your final grade. And in your works cited page, please list the name of the article that you will be summarizing and analyzing. This an example of the type of the format you should follow:

“Argentina in 1983: Reflections on the Language of the Military and George Orwell,” by Alberto Ciria. Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Vol. 11, No. 21 (1986), pp. 57-69.

In terms of the content of the report, I am looking for two main points of discussion. First, you should devote the first half of the report to a summary of the main points that the author is trying to convey to the reader. To help you to address this issue, consider some of these questions: What type of article is this? Is the author presenting an original feature, or is he/she conducting a book review? If this is a book review, what book (or books) is being reviewed? What is the author’s purpose for writing this article? What is the author’s academic or professional background?

As for the second point of discussion, this is where you provide your opinion or perceptions of the article. In other words, what did you think about it? What were the strengths or weaknesses of the article? How did the article relate to the class? You are definitely encouraged to write in first person singular (I feel that…, I think..) as you provide your opinions. As a general rule of thumb, your JSTOR review should be about 60% summary and 40% commentary. Thus a 5-page review with about 3 & 1⁄2 pages summary and 1 & 1⁄2 pages commentary is an ideal proportion.

My Athleles name is Trevor, his sport is World’s Toughtest Mudder, the skill is climbing

Using your athlete for your final project, Identify and define Jumping and Aerial Motion aspects within one of the skills you have chosen to analyze. (If your chosen athlete’s dynamic skill does not involve throwing and/or hitting choose another athlete where one phase of a dynamic movement exists in a skill. Do NOT choose a skill that another classmate has chosen for their final project. Choose a skill in another sport you are interested in.)

What phase of the skill is Jumping and Aerial Motion present? How do Internal and External biomechanical principles influence your athlete during the Jump and during the aerial portion of your skill phase? Do they transfer or progress between phases?

In your classmate responses: Within the jumping and aerial movement of the skill are there ways to…
1. Improve the athlete’s physical capacity,
2. Find Innovative techniques to perform the skill,
3. Suggest ways for more efficient interactions with the environment.
See… Li (2012). How can sport biomechanics contribute to the advance of world record and best athletic performance?.

HINT: using the 100m sprint as an example, you could provide your classmates with the following types of advice.
1. Power training suggestions to improve reaction time to the gun and getting out of the blocks quicker.
2. Types of training suggestions to maintain efficient movement out of the blocks.
3. Identify environmental factors: track, shoes, blocks, wind and how to counter or use these factors.

explain how using one of strategies either reaching out to others or time management can help the person you are mentoring rise above their stress

Imagine you’re mentoring one of the people in the scenario below who is experiencing a stressful situation in the workplace. Explain how using one of strategies (either reaching out to others or time management) can help the person you are mentoring rise above their stress.

Ashlee and James both work together in accounting and are each responsible for half of an extensive presentation. Ashlee tries to work on the presentation a little each day, while James tends to wait until the last minute to turn in his portions of the project. But, because they rely on each other for certain tasks, Ashlee is often forced to wait for James and then rush to complete her assignments.

Ashlee complains that James’ procrastination is causing her to worry about his work as well as her own and is giving her unnecessary stress. Likewise, James is stressed by Ashlee’s anger and constant hovering. Because of the conflict, James is missing more work, and you suspect it’s because he wants to avoid Ashlee.

How can you help either Ashlee or James rise above their stress using one of the two strategies?

.The creation of computational graphics and visualizations is a skill in growing demand. These skills are applicable to the following scenarios: the game industry
for creating graphics and animations, the healthcare industry for medical visualizations, the entertainment industry for computer-generated imagery (CGI) and
visual effects, 3D printing for creating physical objects for applied real-world problem solving, and much more. Throughout this course, you will learn how to
write computer code that commands any OpenGL graphics processing unit (GPU) to create, texture, light, render, and animate 3D models in 3D space, and
control virtual environments relative to a virtual camera.
3D Object
A. Your 3D object will be assessed visually to ensure it meets the elements below:
i. Utilize organized geometry, ensuring that polygons (triangles) on the 3D model are well spaced and connected and give a low-polygon
representation of a real-world object.
ii. Utilize textures, ensuring that high-resolution textures are projected accurately on the 3D model.
iii. Generate lighting, ensuring that all lights are implemented to give a professional-looking presentation and visualization of the model.
iv. Apply color to lighting with varying intensities.
B. Navigation Through Input Devices: Your applications will be navigated by using the mouse and keyboard input devices to control a virtual
camera. The elements below must be met:
i. Create horizontal orientation navigation of the 3D object in the application allowing for azimuth orientation of a virtual camera that
orbits a lit model when the mouse is moved horizontally.
ii. Create vertical orientation navigation of the 3D object in the application allowing for altitude orientation of a virtual camera that orbits
a lit model when the mouse is moved vertically.
iii. Create code to clamp or gimbal lock azimuth and altitude orientation to prevent irregular camera angles (e.g., a 90-degree camera
rotation clamp on the pitch axis).
iv. Create perspective and orthographic displays of the 3D object so that the user can change the viewport display of the 3D model from
2D to 3D and vice versa, using the tap of a keyboard key, allowing the user to switch between orthographic (2D) and perspective (3D)
views at will.
C. Syntax Assessment—Best Practices: These best practices should be evident within your program:
i. Employ formatting best practices by providing program code that is easy to read and follows industry-standard code formatting
practices, such as indentation and spacing.
ii. Utilize commenting best practices, ensuring that project source code used is briefly and clearly explained using descriptive comments.
iii. Employ functional coding logic best practices, ensuring that the program runs as expected.

Case: Generate Summary Statistics in Excel

Company summary

LendingClub is a peer-to-peer marketplace where borrowers and investors are matched together. The goal of LendingClub is to reduce the costs associated with these banking transactions and make borrowing less expensive and investment more engaging. LendingClub provides data on loans that have been approved and rejected since 2007, including the assigned interest rate and type of loan. This provides several opportunities for data analysis.

Calculate Summary Statistics in Excel

We use Excel for basic validation. Remember, there is a limitation on the number of records that Excel can handle, so this is best for smaller- to medium-sized files. Excel’s toolbar at the bottom of the window provides quick access to a summary of any selected values.

  • Open your web browser and go to: https://www.lendingclub.com/info/download-data.action.
  • In the Download Loan Data section, choose “2015” from the drop-down list, then click Download.
  • Locate your downloaded zip files on your computer, and extract the .csv files to a convenient location (e.g., desktop or Documents).
  • Open the LoanStats3c.csv file in Excel.
  • Select the [loan_amnt] column. At the bottom of the window, you will see the Average, Count, and Sum calculations, shown in LAB Exhibit 2-4A. Compare those to the validation given by LendingClub:
  • Funded loans: $3,503,840,175
  • Number of approved loans: 235,629

Q1. Do your numbers match the numbers provided by LendingClub? What explains the discrepancy, if any?

  • Right-click on the summary toolbar and choose Numerical Count from the list. You should now see four values in the bar.

Q2. Does the Numerical Count provide a more useful/accurate value for validating your data? Why or why not do you think that is the case?

Q3. What other summary values might be useful for validating your data?

Required: Answer all of the questions from above and submit your Excel Data File.

Your well-written paper must be 3-4 pages, in addition to title and reference pages.

busn602 discussion 5

Consider the following statement: “The size of a company is not important. What does matter, whether it is a large corporation or a small business, is the capital structure – it always has and always will.”

Do you agree or disagree? In 300 words, support your position.

write a four step response to one of her claims that you will find inspiring

Here are the steps you need to follow for your response, and notice that the example provided below does not have numbers or bullets; it is a compact text (you can have more than one paragraph.)

discussion scholars vs practitioners

For your discussion, find two videos: one by a leading practitioner of finance, and one by a leading scholar. Examples of prestigious practitioners include legendary investors Warren Buffett and Peter Lynch. Some of top scholars of finance include William Sharpe, the original developer of the CAPM. The late Stephen Ross is the author of some of the readings for this class and is the developer of the concept of the arbitrage pricing theory. Other well-known finance scholars include Myron Scholes, Fisher Black, and Eugene Fama. You can also try to find videos from some of the authors of the articles that you are reviewing for your Case and SLP.

Post the link to both the practitioner’s video and the scholar’s video. Include a brief discussion of each video, and compare and contrast the content and style of each video. What do you see as the major differences between content and style of each video? Is it similar to the differences you found between practitioner and scholarly journal articles?

Module 5 – Background

Scholars vs. Practitioners

To start off this module, take a look at the following practitioner-oriented finance journals. These journals have a mix of opinion articles, statistical studies, and guidance and suggestions for financial practitioners. Below is a link to each of the journals’ home pages. To access the journals you will need to go Business Source Complete in the Trident Online Library (click “Additional Library Resources” at the bottom of the Online Classroom and Library section of the main TLC portal page). Note that articles from the past year are not always available in the library, but previous issues of these journals are. Take a look at both the general description of the journal as well as a few recent articles in each journal:

Journal of Applied Corporate Finance was originally started by the investment bank Morgan Stanley and covers a range of issues from the perspective of corporate financial strategies.

Journal of Portfolio Management covers financial issues from the point of view of the investor.

Financial Analysts Journal is the official journal of the CFA Institute, the organization that gives out the Certified Financial Analyst Certificate. Articles in this journal tend to be a bit more technical than articles in other practitioner journals.

Journal of Wealth Management presents research from a financial planning perspective.

Now that you’ve reviewed the practitioner-oriented journals, take a look at some of the academic finance journals that specialize in more scholarly and theory-oriented research.

Here are a couple of scholarly finance journals that are highly ranked and are available in Business Source Complete:

The Review of Financial Studies is one of the toughest finance journals in the world to get published in and has highly technical articles.

Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis: As you can probably tell its name, this journal also publishes highly technical papers.

For a list of additional prestigious scholarly finance journals, check out Google Scholar’s Top Publications in Finance list. Google Scholar is also a good way to find scholarly finance studies, as many of the papers are available online.

Check out at least a few articles from top-ranked scholarly journals in finance. You don’t have too read too much in depth, as these articles are often extremely complex. But try to get an idea of the kind of technical or theoretical articles they publish and see if you can find any articles that interest you.
