1)Nietzsche Response
Read the selection from Friedrich Nietzsche’s Genealogy of Morals (Book One: “Good and Bad†“Good and Evilâ€) and write a 1-2 pg. response (typed, double-spaced, 12-pt. font). Nietzsche criticizes a group who he refers to as “British psychologistsâ€. He claims that they have made a fatal mistake in their accounts of the origin of human morality. What mistake, according to Nietzsche, have they made? How does Nietzsche’s account differ from these “English psychologistsâ€? Also, do you have any idea why Nietzsche might refer to those who he is criticizing as “psychologists†(as opposed to “ethicists†or “philosophersâ€)? Due December 27 at 11:59 PM
2)Sartre Response
Read Jean-Paul Sartre’s “Existentialism is a Humanism” and write a 1-2 pg. response (typed, double-spaced, 12-pt. font). What does Sartre mean when he says that “existence precedes essenceâ€? And what does he mean by the term anguish, forlorness, and despair? Due December 29 at 11:59
3)de Beauvoir Response
Pick one (or two) of the disingenuous/inauthentic attitudes that Simone de Beauvoir describes in her Ethics of Ambiguity (e.g. the sub man, serious man, passionate man, nihilist, or adventurer). Explain what de Beauvoir means by each type of “inauthentic†attitude, and explain how this/these attitude(s) regard or approach freedom. You might also use a character from a favorite film, play, novel, or short story as an example to help illustrate the kind of person(s) she may be describing. Due December 31 at 11:59 PM
4)Nonviolence Response
Read the selections from Simone de Beauvoir’s Ethics of Ambiguity (Ch. 3), from Gandhi’s Selected Political Writings, as well as the short excerpts that I’ve made available from MLK and Malcolm X. Write a 1-2 pg. response (typed, double-spaced, 12-pt. font) comparing two of these figures views on violence (you may also recall some of the things that Socrates said in Plato’s Crito dialogue). Is the use of violence ever morally justified in the struggle for freedom (or in self-defense)? What do the two figures you chose think (and why)? What do you think?
