-To learn about processes of translation in various parts of the world.

-To grapple with perspectives, and paradigms that have been underappreciated in the Western academy.

-To appreciate the implications of struggles over language and translation for autonomy and self-determination.

– To acquire an appreciation of how different philosophies of language and forms of transmission of knowledge can enhance our understanding of translation.

-To develop skill in formulating a research question.

-To develop skill in communicating effectively in writing, and proficiency in making arguments that are coherent, well-developed, and evidence-based.

Professor’s requirement:Final thesis paper: roughly 12-15 pages (undergraduate) 20 pages (graduate). Topic selection: You may take some aspect of our class – some text, a debate we cover, an issue, that will serve as springboard. On the other hand, you may be drawn to something that we did not cover yet still speaks to the concerns of the class (it must speak to the constellation of issues that make up the domain of the class). I will require a theoretical section where you explain what you are doing and provide justification.

The topic for our class is to study all the translation theories except from western translation theories (eg. Brazilian Cannibalism translation theories, Indian translation theories, Chinese translation theories like Yan Fu’s Xin, Da, Ya and Lu Xun’s hard translation, and Japanese translation theories). So this final paper you are going to write has to be related to this topic and the course’s goal. In this paper, you will be writing a thesis statement/argument for this paper. And then you will be writing about the comparison between Lu Xun’s hard/stiff translation (which is a form of theory called domestication) and Venuti’s domestication theory (this you will have to find some resources on your own). After the comparison, you will need to demonstrate what you see as a general similarity(ies)/difference(s) between Chinese and Western translationtheory (as a whole). And lastly in the conclusion part, you should be arguing how and why does this comparison between Lu Xun and Venuti’s theories and between Chinese and Western translation theories are related to this class’s discussion, and also how do Chinese translation theories contribute to the whole translation world.

You need to have an introduction paragraph, introducing what is going to be written in this paper (better write a thesis statement or argument for this whole paper);

A part that do the comparison between Lu Xun’s hard/stiff translation (which is a form of theory called domestication) and Venuti’s domestication theory (this you will have to find some resources on your own).

A part that demonstrate what you see as a general similarity(ies)/difference(s) between Chinese and Western translationtheory (as a whole).

And a conclusion paragraph: you should be arguing how and why does this comparison between Lu Xun and Venuti’s theories and between Chinese and Western translation theories are related to this class’s discussion, and also how do Chinese translation theories contribute to the whole translation world.

At last, you can think of the question in these aspects:

Discussion of what we’ve learned, how it contributes to our understanding of language, how language works, the relationship between oral and written language, what counts as “language,” the role of language, its relationship to knowledge, knowledge exchanges, religion and spirituality, power and cultural imperialism.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

this was the requirement before, and all you have to do is to expand this paper to 12 pages, I will add some requirements afterwards.

tha101 essay

You may expand your written response to either TWILIGHT: LOS ANGELES, 1992 or FIFTH OF JULY to a short essay of about 600 words. (You must complete the original response to my prompt about these video-recordings first, in order to qualify for this extra credit option.) This essay should thoughtfully incorporate a short quotation from at least ONE of the essays in the “What is (element of theater)?” (performance, theater, acting, audience, design, or directing) section of the course. For example, you could talk about Twilight as an example of Grotowski’s “Poor Theater,” because the main focus is on the acting and the relationship between actor and audience rather than on design (it might also qualifies as “poor theater” because it utilizes a cast of only one actor, and breaks the fourth wall repeatedly, keeping the audience engaged with the actor.) Conversely, you could integrate a quotation from Auslander’s “Liveness” essay, and discuss how Deveare Smith integrates video recordings from a past event into her theater piece, which makes it more of a “multimedia” performance (this would contradict the argument that it is truly “poor theater.”) Another example: you could discuss Fifth of July in terms of its acting, direction, or the various visually-designed production elements including set, costume, lighting, etc. (For example: the play moves from inside to outdoors between the two acts: how does this setting change impact the story? how does the setting impact the theme or message of the play? how do Shirley’s costumes impact the theme of the play? etc.) Please upload the essay in MS Word or PDF form only, and be sure that your essay includes a SHORT quotation from one of the secondary readings that is artfully integrated into your discussion.

strategy paper 2

Politicians want to show that they have made progress in addressing certain problems while in office, and the crime problem is no exception. The Attorney General of the United States has appointed you to lead a crime task force. Your mission is to design a strategy to address two crime problems:

  1. the most difficult crime problem to address
  2. the easiest crime problem to address

The Attorney General wants to show his effectiveness by solving at least one crime problem, hence, his interest in solving the easiest crime problem. The AG believes that this will increase perceptions of his success in office. At the same time, the AG recognizes that the most difficult crime problems to solve are often the most serious, and wants to communicate his commitment to trying to address these problems as well, hence, his interest in developing a plan to deal with the most difficult crime problem, a plan that can be described to the American people as part of an ongoing effort.

You will write a report in which you present your recommendations to the Attorney General of the United States. Consult your textbook index for a list of crime types, (chapters 52-70). Think about the information on the different crimes and select one crime that you believe is the most difficult to address and one crime that you believe is the easiest. Your report should consist of the following elements:

Introduction (Introduce the topic and mission of the report.)

Crime #1 (Describe the characteristics of the crime you believe to be the most difficult to address: prevalence, trends, costs, etc. Be specific in presenting information on this crime.)

Plan to Address Crime #1 (Describe the plan you are presenting to the Attorney General to address this particular crime problem. Again, be specific in describing the steps that will be taken (who will do what, for how long, with what resources).

Crime #2 (Describe the characteristics of the crime you believe to be the easiest to address: prevalence, trends, costs, etc. Be specific in presenting information on this crime.)

Plan to Address Crime #2 (Describe the plan you are presenting to the president to address this particular crime problem. Again, be specific in describing the steps that will be taken (who will do what, for how long, with what resources).

Conclusion (Summarize what you have presented in the body of the report.)

The sources you use for this assignment should include the textbook, and two peer-reviewed journal articles from Project 1. Significant amounts of information from the peer-reviewed journal articles and textbook sources from Project 1 should be incorporated into your paper.

In addition to presenting information from your sources, demonstrate your critical thinking skills in applying the course material and the information from the peer-reviewed journal articles to your plans to address the two crimes you selected.
