Review Chapter 1 of the Newman and Newman course text and the articles provided in the Learning Resources and choose one of the articles for this Assignment.

Write a 2- to 3-page paper and include the following: Using information from Chapter 1 of the Newman and Newman course text, identify and explain the components of a theory that were described in the article. Explain whether the theory in the article was described sufficiently so the reader can conclude if it meets the requirements of a good theory (as outlined in your textbook).

Self Care

Learning about trauma and its treatment through reading, video clips, and other materials, is inherently traumatic and can trigger emotions in anyone – especially new counselors who are in the midst of academic stressors, who bring their own personal histories to the table, and who are still learning how to cope with the feelings that being a clinician can raise. Developing a self-care plan and committing to it helps you understand how challenging it can be for clients to engage in the self-care we ask of them.

Throughout the course, you will be viewing video clips and hearing and reading stories that are defined as crises that may be upsetting to you. It is important to prepare yourself for how you will take care to avoid vicarious traumatization, or second-hand trauma. Describe what personal and professional challenges you might face in dealing with client crises, and how you will implement effective self-care practices.

Advocacy for crisis intervention

Describe the role of counselors as advocates for the care of people in their communities. What are some ways that counselors can advocate for the development of crisis intervention, prevention and emergency management plans within their community? Use specific examples to illustrate your ideas and incorporate the professional literature as support.

Dailogue

For this assignment, you will develop a fictionalized dialogue of two people in a relationship who are exhibiting relationship, cognitive, health, or other problems that appear related to stress or a reaction to a stressful event. In your dialogue, you need to ensure that one of the parties introduces some possibilities as to how or why these symptoms have developed. Complete the dialogue with some recommendations by one party to the other.

Begin by indicating the two participants in the dialogue and their relationship. Following is an example. You can use it to start your dialogue or you can develop one completely on your own. In any case, make certain the dialogue is about stress and that one party provides some possible solutions for the other party.

Example:

Dee and Joanna are sisters who are both in high school. Dee is at the end of her freshman year and Joanna is just about to graduate.

Dee: I’ve been wanting to talk to you about what’s bothering me for a long time now, but you have been so busy.

Joanna: What’s up?

Dee: Remember how happy I was back in middle school? I thought it would be even better when I moved up to Perris High at the start of my freshman year. But it isn’t, and I’m finding myself really unhappy now.

Joanna: What changed?

Dee: I guess I no longer feel comfortable with the group of friends I’ve had since elementary school.

Joanna: What other things have changed?

Dee: I used to be able to study for hours at a time. Now, I lose focus after a very short time. I’ve also put on some weight.

Assuming in your dialogue that Dee is experiencing stress, Joanna as her older sister wants to help her. How does Joanna go about pinpointing the issues and what recommendations can she make? That should be included in your dialogue.

Length: 2-3 pages

Your dialogue should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect graduate-level writing and APA standards. Be sure to adhere to University’s Academic Integrity Policy.

Role of counselor in crisis response

  Part 1: Interview

To learn more about crisis intervention and trauma-informed community-based strategies (such as Psychological First Aid), contact a licensed professional individual to interview, in person or on the telephone, who knows of an existing crisis response plan. Identify the person you interview and their specific job or role, such as crisis counselor or a member of the Red Cross or Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), or therapists who work with victims of PTSD or are involved in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD), and arrange an interview. Once you arrange a personal interview, develop a set of open-ended questions that will allow you to gain a clear and complete picture of the plan as it currently exists. (See the sample interview questions provided within the assignment.)

Ask your interviewee to give you a specific example of an actual crisis and the details of the various roles that are involved in the plan that is utilized, including any mental health professional. Examine what you are told by the interviewee, and compare it to the identified elements recommended for response plans in the Mental Health All-Hazards Disaster Planning Guidance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS, 2003), provided in the Resources. Part 2: Description and Analysis

Describe and analyze a counselor’s role and responsibilities as a member of interdisciplinary community outreach and emergency management response teams in a crisis response. Summarize the responsibilities of the counselor within the mental health component of the crisis response system in order to identify the type of necessary training for the role of the counselor.

To successfully complete this project, you will be expected to do the following: Compare and contrast the elements of a real-world example of an emergency management plan, obtained through your personal interview of a professional in the field, to the elements identified in the course studies, particularly the Mental Health All-Hazards Disaster Planning Guidance (USDHHS, 2003), provided in the Resources. Summarize the responsibilities of the counselor, including the professional role, functions, and relationships as a member of a crisis response plan during a local, regional, or national crisis, disaster, or other trauma-causing event (CACREP, 2016). Describe in detail the specific skills and knowledge required by a counselor in order to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary emergency management response team. Describe the types of training a counselor requires to develop the required skills and knowledge relevant to emergency management. Exhibit proficiency in effective, credible academic writing and critical thinking skills.
