Group Process and Development

Group process is the focus of group facilitation skills. A group counselor supports the group development by attending to the process of what is happening in the room versus what is being said. Reflect upon your experience using the media piece Group Facilitation Skills in Unit 6 (linked in Resources). Which skill was most challenging? What stood out to you as you practiced applying group facilitation skills?

Next, compare your experience to what you observed in the Unit 5 video Leading Counseling Groups With Adults: A Demonstration of the Art of Engagement (linked in Resources): Identify a segment in the film Leading Counseling Groups with Adults: A demonstration of the art of engagement where the group leaders reflect the group process. Include the time frame of the exchange so others can find the segment easily. How do their interventions that bring the focus into the here and now deepen the experience for the group members? How did the skills demonstrated by Dr. Schimmel and Dr. Jacobs provide a model for your own practice in this unit?

Using Mixed Methods to Evaluate Counseling Services

In the Bennett, Riger, Schewe, Howard, and Wasco (2004) article assigned in this unit, the authors describe the evolution of their plan to assess outcomes in their community’s hotline, advocacy, counseling, and shelter services for victims of domestic violence. After reviewing the article, address the following: What qualitative data did the authors choose to evaluate? What quantitative data did they choose to evaluate? Critique the authors’ rationale and final decision, referencing considerations offered from the assigned chapters from your textbook. Do you agree or disagree with their rationale? What additional information about clients’ experience would have been valuable, and how could it have been collected? See the 2011 Chenail article assigned for this unit for possibilities.

Unit 6 Discussion

Use  the Internet and Library to search for a case involving a human service  professional accused of ethical violations due to behaviors and risks  inherent in the digital age. Focus your search on the United States.  Please choose a different case example than your classmates have chosen.

Please respond to the following: Describe the case in detail and report the outcome in your post. Apply the risk management strategies you learned from your readings to the case. Analyze  how the strategies could be applied and speculate as to how the outcome  may have been different had these techniques been utilized

Due Wednesday

In your future work, you will likely need to educate clients about   treatment resources available for various mental health and wellness   needs. Create a patient education handout in the format of your choice   for an imaginary client with a mental health issue of your choice.   Describe a common evidence-based practice relating to this mental   health issue and how this treatment may address your client’s need   regarding mental health and wellness.

Look at local programs in your area when selecting a program to   recommend for this imaginary client. This handout/brochure should be   used as a resource as if you were the behavioral health provider in a   medical setting. Remember that as someone who is not a licensed mental   health counselor, you must distinguish between offering counseling and   how to connect clients with needed resources as diagnosed by licensed   professionals. The purpose is to explain treatment approaches and   educate your client on care options.

DISCUSSION6

What role do your emotions serve? And is it okay to express them in the workplace? A salesperson with intense passion can convince someone to make a purchase. On the other hand, an angry manager can prompt an unfair review. In this discussion, you are asked to help your team to understand and manage their emotions in the workplace. To get started, review the following article: Like It or Not, Emotions Will Drive the Decisions You Make Today.

Assume that you are a team leader, and your team is under a deadline to get a lot done. You have noticed that some of your team members tend to get overwhelmed and make emotional decisions. Other team members seem to thrive in those situations and are motivated by the deadline.

Based on this article, make a list of things you can do as a manager to help your team to understand and manage their emotions so they all can be productive. For instance, what could you teach them about emotions? How would you pair people to work together? What would help them to learn about their emotions so they can be more productive in the workplace?

 COLLAPSE

Read the article, How Companies Can Profit from a “Growth Mindset,” which  outlines a number of benefits for encouraging employees and team members to grow and develop their skills, talents, and competencies.

Now imagine you’re a new manager in a company that adheres to a more fixed mindset approach — in other words, that a person’s attributes and abilities are inherently fixed and unchanging. During your own professional development through the years, you have worked to develop a growth mindset for yourself. Now that you’re in a leadership role, how could you go about creating change within your new department and encouraging your company to foster a growth mindset?

For instance, how would you deliver feedback to your team members that would promote a growth mindset?

Note – You can learn more about mindset and growth mindset in Chapter 7 of the webtext. Here’s a short YouTube video to also help you learn the concepts: Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset.
