Prevention Media Project

Students will create a substance abuse prevention media project(no longer that 3-4 minutes) targeting any population covered in the course content. 

You are required to present an oral overview/statement of your project, by Week 7

Students are encouraged to be creative! It is important that students plan early in the semester for this project to ensure thatthe project earns maximum points. All projects must have the appearance of having been well thought out and organized.

When planning the media project students should considerfollowing these steps (use this guide as a checklist to ensure that you have covered all required areas of the assignment):

a. Choose a target population – the group to which the message is focused. A brief narrative of the characteristics of your target population must accompany your project.

b. Examine the target group to determine what developmental level (age group) you will choose and those factors that are important in reaching that group.

c. Consider using messages that are most likely accessible to the target group you have chosen. Your target population can be defined by geographical area (country, region, town, etc.), as well as by age of the group and gender. It is important to be as specific as possible, remembering that the reach of your project likely will be broader than you may have thought.

d. Remember to give considerable thought to the text of your message, noting that “less is better”, you don’t want to pack your message with a lot of text that won’t grab the attention of your target population. Often the use of color, symbols and pictures will attract the attention of the target group. Pamphlets that have pictures of the people/group you are targeting are more likely to be read, than pamphlets that are not representative of the culture of the group you are targeting (ex. You would not want to give a Hispanic person a pamphlet that has pictures on it of only African Americans).

e. Also, the usefulness of the item you use to put your message on will help the recipient to keep your message within their sight (i.e. pens, mouse pads, pencils, waste bags for cars, refrigerator magnets, stress balls, small hand sanitizers, flash drives, etc.). These items though small are excellent ways of communicating messages.

When planning audio messages perhaps on the local radio station, consider the schedule and times your target will be most available to hear your message. For example, the best time to reach elderly African American females may be Sunday morning, between the hours of 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. Your research will need to be broad enough to determine the best time or source to reach your target group.

The purpose of this discussion assignment is to familiarize you with the purpose and components of a research proposal, and to allow an opportunity for you to get some feedback on your ideas for the Final Paper.

In your initial post, Briefly describe the purpose of a research proposal and its components. Present your research question and/or hypothesis. Give some background information on the topic, including citing one or two previous related studies with their references. Name the research design you would like to use. Defend why you feel it is the most appropriate way to study your research question. Discuss potential ethical issues that might arise and what you would do to address them.

Preparation Variables

Throughout this course, you will work on developing a research project utilizing data from the GSS Data Explorer website, which contains archival data. Archival data is preexisting data that has been collected by another individual or organization, and is available to be analyzed enabling us to draw new conclusions about the data.

In Assessment 2, you will use the website to extract your data using the two variables that you select for this assessment. Begin by selecting two variables of your choice from the following list. Note that “r” represents the participant. These are the variables that you will use throughout the course in your research project.  Satisfaction with financial situation. Change in financial situation. Opinion of family income. Marital status. Highest year of school completed. Spouse’s highest degree. Does r or spouse supervise anyone? How often r attends religious services. Condition of health.

Next, start to design a research topic involving the two selected variables. For example, if you select “condition of health” and “How often r attends religious services,” you may want to research how religion impacts an individual’s health and wellness. Scholarly Sources

Before you conduct research, you need to center your hypothesis and supporting literature on this topic through a literature review, which will be the first piece of your project. You will need to find at least seven scholarly sources to use for your literature review. Below are resources that may help you. Start with Research Methods in Psychology Library Guide, which provides focused library databases and APA resources that may direct your article search.  Organizing all of your articles and notes will help you work through your literature review more efficiently. Write a 3–5 page literature review that incorporates at least seven scholarly sources. Address the following within your literature review. Ensure that each main point of your paper is supported clearly with evidence from your sources. Under some points, there are guiding questions to guide your thinking, but be sure to consult the scoring guide to make sure you are covering all of what will be assessed.  Explain the psychological concepts that were addressed in the research.   Are there any patterns, themes, or trends that you were able to trace in your research?  Describe the concepts related to the theory that will be the basis for your research.   Discuss the value and the limitations of the theoretical concepts.  Develop a plausible hypothesis, where you predict the outcomes of the relationship between your two variables, that relies on evidence and reasoning.
