RESPONSE 1

Respond to at least two colleagues with your views on what makes this form of assessment specific to social work.

Colleague 1: Tiffany

If I had to work with children I would use open-ended questions as one of my evidence-based tools. I would use open-ended questions because using this evidence-based tool may get the social worker a  broader answer than just asking the client closed-ended questions. The client may add more to open-ended questions and gives them more room to expand their answers thus the social worker being able to find more information out about their clients. I also think using a genogram helps the client tell their story. This will be able to let the social worker learn more about the extended family including values, morals, and cultural beliefs of the family. Genograms help guide the client in telling their story and who plays what significant role in that clients life. This technique is a learning tool for the social worker in regards to learning family roles, values, cultural beliefs, etc.

Colleague 2: Brandi

Description of the Importance of Using Multiple Evidence-Based Tools:

Assessment is used to describe an assortment of activities and processes in the social sciences and human services that involve gathering information about a client(s) and the presenting circumstances leading to an evaluation, determination, or plan of action focused on that client or client system. In social work practice, some aspects of assessment are driven by the practice setting, the population being served, and the practice model being applied by the social worker (Holosko, J., M., Dulmus, N., C., Sowers, M., K.). When assessing children, you’re able to accumulate all information needed to help that child you’re servicing. Utilizing multiple evidence-bases tools when assessing in social work is imperative. Quantitative assessing involves numbers and statistics in order to come up with the exact information needed. Open-Ended questions are utilized to answer questions using one’s own knowledge. Ecologically is designed to find reactions of childhood and genetics.

The use of an eco-map in assessment and explain the different systems you will account for in your assessment of a child:

Eco-maps have been used in multiple ways by early intervention providers and rehabilitation specialists and within the clinical practice of social workers, psychologists, and other mental health professionals (Bailey & Simeonsson, 1988; Mattaini, 1995). It shows the personal and social relationships of one’s       environment.  The eco-map represents the family within the context of significant relationships with their individuals and institutions (Horton & Bucy, 2000).

PSY 520 SPSS Assignment 1

Before you begin the assignment:

• Read Chapter 8 in your Discovering Statistics Using IBM SPSS Statistics textbook.

• Review the video tutorial for an overview of conducting multiple regression in SPSS.

• Download and open the Popularity SPSS data set.

An overview of the data set:

This data set represents hypothetical data from a study that examined how well some core personality traits predict a person’s level of popularity. Personality was measured using the “Big 5,” which is a very commonly used measure of personality. In fact, a Big 5 personality scale was included in the Module Two discussion.

Here is some more information about the variables in this hypothetical data set:

• Number: This is the ID number of the participant

• Sex: Participants’ sex, with “1” standing for male and “2” standing for female

• Age: College year of the participant, with “1” standing for freshman, “2” standing for sophomore, etc.

• Popularity: Popularity measured with a questionnaire that could range from 0 to 100, with higher numbers indicating more popularity

• Extroversion: A Big 5 trait indicating level of sociability. Scores range from 1 to 5, with high numbers indicating extroverted and low numbers indicating introverted

• Agreeableness: A Big 5 trait indicating level of interpersonal warmth and friendliness. Scores range from 1 to 5, with high numbers indicating warmth and low numbers indicating coldness towards others

• Conscientiousness: A Big 5 trait indicating level of self-control and responsibility. Scores range from 1 to 5, with high numbers indicating high conscientiousness and low numbers indicating low conscientiousness

• Neuroticism: A Big 5 trait indicating level of anxiety and emotional stability. Scores range from 1 to 5, with high numbers indicating high neuroticism and low numbers indicating low neuroticism

• Openness: A Big 5 trait indicating level of willingness to try new things and creativity. Scores range from 1 to 5, with high numbers indicating high open-mindedness and low numbers indicating closed-mindedness

Questions:

1) Describe in your own words what type of research situations call for a researcher to use a multiple regression analysis.

Type answer below:

2a) Run a basic correlation of matrix for the Popularity, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness variables.

Paste output below (Read carefully: The best way to do this is to select “Copy Special” when copying from the SPSS output. Then select image as a format to copy. When pasting in Word, select Paste Special, choose a picture format, and then resize the image so it fits the screen):

2b) Based on these results, which personality variables are significantly correlated with Popularity?

Type answer below:

3a) Conduct a multiple regression analysis using Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness as predictors of Popularity.

Paste the output below:

3b) Which variables are significant predictors of Popularity? Compare and contrast the results from the multiple regression analysis to the basic correlation results from question 2b.

Type your answer below:

3c) What is the R-squared of this model, and what does it tell us about how well this model predicts Popularity?

Type your answer below:

3d) Write the results of the multiple regression in APA style. For help, refer to the Regression section in this document.

Critique of a Research Study

Reread the full text of the study you selected in Week One. Evaluate the study and write a critique, using the textbook and relevant journal articles to support your analysis of the study. Use the following section headings and content in your paper. Introduction State the purpose of the paper. Clearly identify the study being critiqued, by title and authors. Summarize the research question, hypothesis (if a quantitative study), and background information on the topic from the study’s literature review. Did the authors present a well-balanced summary of current knowledge about the topic? Is there any apparent bias in the literature review? Methods Differentiate the research design (experimental or non-experimental) and approach (qualitative or quantitative), sampling method, and data collection methods. Indicate the sample size, variables and measures (if a quantitative study), statistical tests (if a quantitative study), coding and analysis procedures (if a qualitative study), and any assumptions made by the researchers. Were the procedures chosen appropriate for the study? What alternative methods would you suggest? Ethical Aspects Analyze ethical issues pertaining to this study. Did the researchers explicitly address ethical issues in the article? If not, was there evidence in the report that the participants’ safety and confidentiality were protected? Was an approval process by an Institutional Review Board or similar ethics review committee mentioned? Were any of the practices ethically questionable (deception, coercion, etc.)? Results Present a summary of the results of the analysis performed in the study. Did the authors keep their interpretations and conclusions separate from the analysis results (evidence)? Discussion and Conclusion Analyze and critique the conclusions drawn by the researchers. Do the conclusions follow logically from the results of the analysis? Evaluate the overall efficacy of the research study by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of aspects of its design and implementation. Identify the limitations noted by the researchers and add any limitations you see that were not mentioned in the article. Describe the directions for future research proposed by the authors and evaluate their appropriateness. Recommend at least one idea for a future study that will overcome some of the limitations of this study.  Keep in mind that this suggested future study will serve as the basis for your Final Paper.

Your paper should be four to six pages in length (excluding title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Utilize a minimum of five sources that were published within the last 10 years and are documented in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. These sources should include the article being critiqued, at least three peer-reviewed journal articles, and the course textbook. It is recommended that you visit the Research Methods research guide in the Ashford University Library for suggested articles, as well as searching for articles in the Library’s databases.
