Discussion: Persuasion in Everyday Life (GRADED)

For this GRADED discussion, think about a time in your life where you tried to persuade someone to do something. Keep in mind that this doesn’t have to be a situation that was a full-blown argument—it can be something as simple as convincing a friend to go to a specific restaurant for lunch—and it doesn’t have to be a situation where you “won” the other person over either.

Before you begin writing, please review the discussion rubric below to make sure you fulfill all of the required tasks.

When you’ve come up with the moment, write two fully developed paragraphs explaining it to your classmates. In the first paragraph, describe the moment of persuasion so that your instructor and peers can “see” it. In the second paragraph, explain why you felt like that moment of persuasion was either successful or unsuccessful. What strategies or techniques did you use to try to get the person to side with you?

Building a Health History

26-year-old Lebanese female living in graduate-student housing

How would your communication and interview techniques for building a health history differ with each patient? How might you target your questions for building a health history based on the patient’s social determinants of health? What risk assessment instruments would be appropriate to use with each patient, or what questions would you ask each patient to assess his or her health risks? Identify any potential health-related risks based upon the patient’s age, gender, ethnicity, or environmental setting that should be taken into consideration. Select one of the risk assessment instruments presented in the Seidel’s Guide to Physical Examination text, or another tool with which you are familiar, related to your selected patient. Develop at least five targeted questions you would ask your selected patient to assess his or her health risks and begin building a health history.APA Citation 3 to 4 Reference within 5 years

                                  Discussion: Nurses as Health Advocates

What does it take to be an effective health advocate? As a nurse, you have many opportunities to advocate for patients and populations, whether formally or informally. Being an advocate involves more than knowing how to lobby or to whom to write letters. It requires passion and compassion, commitment and courage.

In this Discussion, you will consider the attributes of an effective advocate for population health and/or the nursing profession. You will analyze those attributes that help nurses be a powerful force in improving the quality of health care and in this case especially, the needs of returning veterans and their families.

                                                     To prepare:

Review the article “On Being a Good Nurse: Reflections on the Past and Preparing for the Future” and “War, its aftermath, and U.S. health policy: Toward a comprehensive health program for America’s military personnel, veterans, and their families” found in this week’s Learning Resources.

Consider the multiple health care needs of returning veterans and their families.

Post two types of health needs returning veterans and their families might need. How might you advocate for the needs of this population. What type of advocacy skills would you need and how could you develop them. What responsibility does a nurse have to be an advocate? Give specific examples.

Antioxidant Nutrients and Nutrition and Bone Health

According to the CDC, more than half of all Americans consumed a supplement in 2012.  Supplements are common in our culture, and many people think they need to consume a supplement to be healthy.  Are supplements safe?  In this forum, we will investigate vitamin and mineral supplements.

Initial Post:

Using your favorite search engine, find a vitamin and mineral supplement and evaluate it. In your initial forum post, discuss the following: What is the cost of these supplements? How do the amounts of vitamins and minerals in the product compare with the DRIs, AI, and UL? Are the levels of nutrients safe? What compounds are included that are not essential nutrients? What disclaimers or warnings are made about the product? Does the manufacturer provide scientific evidence to back up their claim?  How likely is the supplement to improve a person’s health?
