Case Study, Chapter 18, Academic Integrity in Nursing Education: Is it Declining?

A group of nursing students are in the middle of an exam when two students witness another student pull out his phone and look up answers. Neither student informs the faculty member but after the exam they discuss what they witnessed.

1. Describe the most common forms of cheating in the classroom and in the clinical area.

2. What should the nursing students do in regard to what they witnessed during the exam? Why is it important for them to do anything?

· Follow the step-by-step instructions provided in the Instructions: Content Coding of Student Pet Peeves document in this week’s resources. The document provides detailed instructions on the step-by-step process of conducting the content analysis for this part of the Assignment.

· Access the Perceived Pet Peeves Data document located in this week’s resources that includes the narrative descriptions of 10 students about their “pet peeves’ in courses they have taken. (In other words, what are the things that detracted from their learning experiences in these courses)?

o The analytic method you will use to analyze the narrative data for this Assignment is called content analysis. It requires you to read each student’s narrative and then code its content using thematic categories on a coding sheet.

· Access the Code Sheet: Student Pet Peeve Data document located in this week’s resources to carry out the coding as defined in the instructions.

o For the written part of this assignment, you will need to describe the most common types of “pet peeves” that students have about their courses.

We have covered many of “the basics” of medical terminology, but as with any new language, you will continue to learn and use new words throughout your careers. You will come across unfamiliar words, phrases, and abbreviations for many years to come. In order to be prepared for this, it is important to identify valid and reliable resources for medical information.

For your initial post, please provide one example of a valid and reliable resource that you would be able to use in your future career. Keep in mind that it’s probably not feasible to carry around a physical book while performing your job. What kind of resources would be available for you in your chosen career? Online, mobile, and other versatile resources might be useful sources to consider.
