Ashford 2: – Week 1 – Discussion 1

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Contents   of a Annual Report

Discuss the following scenario: Staff members from the marketing department of your firm are doing a splendid job selling products to customers.  Many of the customers are so pleased that they are also buying shares in the company’s stock, which means that they receive a copy of the firm’s annual report.  Unfortunately, questions sometimes arise that the marketing staff members are woefully inadequate at answering.  Technical questions about the firm’s financial condition and performance are referred to the chief financial officer, but the director of marketing has asked you to write a memo in which you explain the key elements in an annual report so that marketing representatives are better prepared to respond to questions of a more general nature.

For your initial post, write a clear concise memo (no more than 250 words) that describes the contents of an annual report so marketing personnel can understand the basic requirements of an annual report. Reference this week’s readings and lecture to help organize and explain your thoughts. In addition, answer the following questions:

Do you think all marketing staff members should be      equipped to speak with the public about the firm’s financial matters?  What are some of the benefits of improving employee      financial literacy?

Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts.

Intro. to Philosophy Critique

The purpose of a critique is to demonstrate your ability to summarize the arguments of a noted philosopher and examine their arguments in light of the ideas of other thinkers who dealt with the same issues.  For each critique, you will select an article from the Voices of Wisdom text, drawing on the Invitation text and related articles in Voices to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the position presented in your chosen article.  For example, if your article defends “common sense realism,” you might raise some of Descartes’ arguments against relying on sense experience.

Your critique should include your own reflections upon the issues being raised (not just expressing an opinion, but examining the arguments).  You should note any logical fallacies, inconsistencies or vagueness you find in the article.  Be as specific as possible about your objections.  For example, if you note an inconsistency, don’t just say the article was inconsistent but note the specific passage that reveals an inconsistency, and describe the problem.  Just saying an article “doesn’t make sense” or is “unclear” won’t do.  Relating the article to real-life tests of applicability is always encouraged.

Generally critiques will be about 4-6 pages in length, with roughly two-thirds of the paper summing up the article’s argument in your own words, with appropriate citations (using any standard form – Chicago, MLA etc.) to clarify their position.  The closing will draw on your other reading and reflection to examine the strengths and weaknesses of the article’s position in light of available alternatives.  You might want to make use of basic reference works beyond the text to assist you in understanding the issues, but extensive research beyond the two texts is neither expected nor required.

Please don’t hesitate to check with me for any clarification or questions you might have about the article you’re examining (well in advance if you are involved in a class presentation!).  If your critiques are submitted when due, one week following the class discussion of the topic being considered, you will have an opportunity to make revisions based upon comments from my teaching assistant and myself.  Late papers will be penalized one letter grade for each week they are late, and no papers will be accepted once they are more than three weeks late.  Be aware that if you select a topic being discussed late in the semester, there will only be one revision opportunity, since we will need to skip the teaching assistant comment step.

Keep in mind that you will also be selecting one of the articles you are critiquing as the basis for preparing an oral presentation, and be aware of the date of that presentation to avoid scheduling conflicts.

Standard   Form Arguments

The central tool of logic is the   argument. Accordingly, constructing good arguments is the central element of   this course. Each writing assignment in this course will give you an   opportunity to construct and improve upon an argument that you will develop as   the course progresses. This discussion post allows you to begin the process   of developing your argument by presenting good reasoning on both sides of an   issue.

The requirement for this   discussion is a minimum of four posts on four separate days, including at   least two substantive responses to peers. The total combined word count for   all of your posts for this discussion, counted together, should be at least   400 words. Answer all the questions in the prompt, and read any resources   that are required to complete the discussion properly. In order to satisfy   the posting requirements for the week, complete your initial post by Day 3   (Thursday) and your other posts by Day 7 (Monday). We recommend that you   get into the discussion early and spread out your posts over the course of   the week. Reply to your classmates and instructor. Attempt to take   the conversation further by responding substantively to the replies that   others make to you as well. Keep the discussion on target, and analyze things   in as much detail as you can.

Prepare: To prepare for this discussion, make sure to read the   assigned chapters of the primary text and to review the required resources,   including the videos about arguments (in the “Lectures” link on the left).   Before responding to the prompt, make sure as well to participate in the   interactive scenario at the top of this page titled The Raise to gain more appreciation of the importance of   constructing good arguments in life.

Reflect: Choose a topic from the PHI103 Final Paper   Options  list. It should be a topic   that you find interesting, but also for which you will be able defend a   position with careful logical reasoning. Construct the strongest argument   that you can on each side of the issue. Strengthen your arguments by   contemplating possible objections to each  argument, and revise your   arguments in light of the objections. Continue this process until you feel   that your arguments for each side are as convincing as you can possibly make   them.

Write: Present your two arguments (one on each side of the issue)   in standard form (with each premise and conclusion on a separate line)   on the topic you selected from the PHI103 Final Paper   Options list. The two arguments should   defend different positions on the topic. For example, if your topic was the   existence of Santa Claus, then you would present one argument for the claim   that Santa Claus does exist and another argument that Santa Claus does not   exist. The premises of each argument will present reasons for thinking that   the conclusion is true.

Here is an example of what an   argument in standard form looks like:
Premise 1: If Santa Claus exists, then he lives at the North Pole.
Premise 2: No one can live at the North Pole.
Conclusion: Santa Claus does not exist.

For each argument, provide a brief   explanation of the strengths and weaknesses of the argument. You might   explain whether the argument is inductive or deductive, or you might provide   a diagram of the argument. Think about how the two arguments compare to each   other. Is one better than the other? If so, what makes that one better? Is   each a fair presentation of what someone taking that position would say? Are   the premises reasonable? How might each argument be made better?

Guided Response: Read the arguments presented by your classmates, and   analyze the reasoning that they have presented. Whether you agree with their   position or not, see if you can help them to improve their arguments. In   particular, point out any respect in which a reasonable person might disagree   with the truth of their premises or with the strength of their reasoning.   Consider addressing the following questions: Did your classmate present a   convincing argument? Why, or why not? Which part of the argument might   someone dispute (e.g., premise, conclusion, structure, etc.)? How might the   argument be strengthened? Make sure that your posts for the week include at   least two substantive responses to classmates.

Assignment: Finalize Selection of a Funder

As you have no doubt discovered, locating an RFP that aligns to your  project idea is a big task. The search can be complex, requiring skilled  use of key words, the capability to navigate different web sites, and  the ability to critically evaluate a funder’s mission and goals as well  as its guidelines for funding. You also need to decide whether public or  private funding is most desirable for you and consider why. With  consideration to feedback you received from your colleagues for the  three RFPs you posted in this week’s Discussion, and to the continued  analysis of your search results for state, federal, and foundation  grants, in this Assignment you will finalize your funder selection.

For this Assignment: Review this week’s Learning Resources. Pay particular attention to Chapters 4 and 6 in the course text.  Review the notes you kept on your web searches. Make sure you have a clear idea of how your search process proceeded. Decide which funding agency and RFP you are going to select. Keep in mind the feedback you received from your colleagues.

Assignment (2 page paper APA Style Format, excluding citations)

Address the following (Non Government Organization to help single mothers take care of their family without the help of welfare) Identify your selected funding agency and include  the title or description of the grant for which you will apply. Add the  most appropriate link (URL) for identifying the RFP. Did you have to modify your project at all as a result of your search? If yes, explain why and how. What are the selected funding agency’s goals and applicant eligibility? What makes you confident that this RFP is worth pursuing?  How do you evaluate RFPs?  What type of search engine did you use? Finally, explain why you selected this RFP.

Addressing Ethical and Cultural Competency Issues

As with any professional field, ethical and cultural competency issues can arise in human services. Sometimes ethical and cultural competence issues are not obvious and can be difficult to identify. Once human services administrators are aware of an issue, they must confront it immediately. Addressing these issues takes strategy, skill, and leadership. It is important for human services administrators to use the tools at their disposal, such as codes of ethics or supervision, to identify and address ethical and cultural competency issues. How a human services administrator addresses these issues might be influenced by his or her leadership style.

Come up with at least two examples of ethical or cultural issues that may occur in your area of human services. Then explain the tools you might use to identify and address ethical issues and issues related to cultural competence. Finally, explain how your leadership style might influence the tools you select to use.
