Moral Dimensions of Information Systems

Ashford 6: – Week 5 – Discussion 2

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Moral   Dimensions of Information Systems

Refer to page 413 Figure 12-1 in your text – The Relationship Between Ethical, Social, and Political Issues in an Information Society. “The introduction of new information technology has a ripple effect, raising new ethical, social, and political issues that must be dealt with on individual, social, and political levels. These issues have five moral dimensions: information rights and obligations, property rights and obligations, system quality, quality of life, and accountability and control.” Give a business example of each. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings.

Argument Outline

Please read the instructions below for information on how to complete this assignment.

For a list of resources that are specific to this assignment, please utilize the “Resources Tab” located below.

If you feel that you need help with any of the main topics for this week, please revisit the Practice Activities located in the Weekly Overview.

• Assignment

• Resources

Please choose one of the following videos:

• Peter Singer’s Ethics

• Slavoj Zizek in Examined Life

• Martin Luther King Jr. on NBC’s Meet the Press in 1965

• Alan Keyes v. Barack Obama debate on death penalty

For this assignment, you will outline at least one of the arguments that you believe are made in the video you selected. In your outline:

• Identify the issue that is addressed and the conclusion that is presented.

• Identify the premises that are given in support of that conclusion.

• Explain whether or not you think the argument is convincing by presenting your reasons for this position. If you do not have evidence for your position, you should consult scholarly materials that relate to the position you present.

Here is an example of an outline about an argument from the Monty Python Argument Clinic video. Utilize the same structure found in the example, but be sure to provide enough detail to satisfactorily complete all aspects of the prompt.

There is no minimum word count, but you must include a title page and reference page in APA style. The only required resource for this assignment is the multimedia source you chose to analyze. This should be the source that you primarily use to complete the assignment. Secondary sources are welcome but not necessary, and they should not be used in place of the argument piece you selected.

The Ashford Writing Center (AWC)  has two kinds of tutoring available to you.

• Live Chat – If you have writing-related questions about a topic before you draft a discussion post or submit a written assignment, you will now be able to chat live with a tutor for a short (up to 20 minute) conversation. Live Chat will be available Monday through Friday from 10:00-11:00 am and 4:00-5:00 pm (PST). AWC Live Chat

MGT 601 week 5 Assignment

Ashford 6: – Week 5 – Assignment

Situational Leadership Theory and Organizational Leadership

As the new top-level executive of a medium-sized corporation, you have noticed that the leadership culture in the organization has been ineffective, which has lowered employee morale. To change the leadership culture you have decided to discuss this issue with all the managers and supervisors in the organization. Prior to meeting with all the managers and supervisors, you have decided that you need to develop a how-to guide on effective leadership.

In a four- to five-page paper (excluding the title and references pages), explain why situational leadership theory is useful and relevant in developing an effective leadership culture. Describe the three theories of situational leadership and what you consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of each theory when leading staff in the organizational environment.

The written assignment should include at least three scholarly sources, in addition to the text, and be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Case Assignment

Case Analysis Guide

1.) Describe what is going on by noting:

a. Who are the key actors? What do we know about each of them?

b. What are the key systems involved? What do we know about each?

c. What does the problem seem to be? What are the underlying problems/issues?

d. What are the key sources of tension? What has lead up to this decision moment? What has changed to make this particular moment such a difficult one to negotiate?

2.) Explore the key sources of tension by considering:

a. What roles do different actors play in creating/sustaining a tension?

i. How can you make sense of these roles? How does an actor’s background, attributes, culture, beliefs, etc., shape his/her perceptions? His/her behaviors? It may help spur your thinking to consider: How might things be different if a male actor were female? If a Black actor were white?

b. What roles do systems play in creating/sustaining a tension (issue/problem)?

i. How can you make sense of these roles? How does a system’s structure, organization, functionality, resources, location, rules, norms, expectations, etc., shape the kinds of experiences the key actors are having?

c. How do interactions among actors and systems relate to a tension?

3.) Assess how additional knowledge and/or theory could deepen your understanding of the key sources of tension, and integrate that additional knowledge:

a. What is known about people with the attributes of the key actors? (e.g. developmental stages, cultural differences, gender differences, life transitions, people experiencing particular types of stressors, etc.) – look for both theories and empirical evidence!

b. What is known about systems like those at the center of this case? (e.g. bureaucratic systems, hierarchical versus flat organizational structures, segregated neighborhoods, the impact of high job stress and low resources on worker productivity, strengths-based versus deficit-based service environments, etc.) – look for both theories and empirical evidence!

c. How does this additional knowledge shape your thinking about the key sources of tension?

4.) Develop a problem formulation that focuses attention on the central tension/issue that must be addressed if the decision-maker is to move things forward in a productive way, while clarifying the key individual and systems factors that are most salient to why/how this issue has come to be.

5.) Develop alternative strategies that the decision-maker could realistically use to address the central issue. Be sure that each strategy begins in the specific moment/situation in which the decision-maker finds him/herself – that is, if the decision-maker is in the midst of a heated argument, do not suggest a strategy that will start tomorrow, assuming that somehow he/she has gotten through the argument. Your strategy will often extend from the current moment into the near future, but you must articulate your strategy for getting from where things are right now, to a point where the key issue has been resolved enough to move forward productively.

6.) Look for evidence to support your strategies – what does the research literature tell us is likely to work? What does theory predict will happen if a particular strategy is selected? What does your own practice experience tell you about the pros and cons of each strategy?

7.) Choose the best strategy, and justify that choice.

Please make sure it is APA style and one thousand words or less.  Please make sure that you list 3 recommendations, which needs to be in numerical order.

The first 2 attachments are Case Analysis examples on how they should be done and the third is the actual case analysis that needs to be written on.

theory application paper in this paper you will advance your thinking by choosing and applying a communication theory for these purposes you will again use the teaming up for change case by maryanne wanca thibault and adelina gomez

Summarize the Argument from Your Theory Application Paper #1

  • Begin your paper by briefly summarizing the argument you made in your first theory application paper. Here, we’re not interested in the grade you received, but how you framed the issue and why you directed attention where you did. Based on the feedback you received on that paper and your ongoing reflection, would you like to make any changes in how you delineate the issue, setting, and participants? (In other words, you get to choose where you want to focus your analytical attention in this paper, but you have to articulate that choice wisely.) If so, provide an update that also explains why you think making such a change is a good idea.

What is Happening & Who is Making it Happen?

Whether you update the issue/event or not, discuss what is happening and what/who is making that happen (as in the first paper). Here, your task is to portray the issue as distinctly communicative (which, as you’ve learned this semester, is not merely about telling the reader what messages are being exchanged—it’s about how meanings are constructed).

Select and Summarize a Specific Communication Theory

Select a specific communication theory that we have read about and/or discussed in class. Here you are free to choose any communication theory that we have covered, or will cover, in our course units and related readings. Be sure here to select a single theory (e.g., Communication Accommodation Theory, Coordinated Management of Meaning, Relational Dialectics, Social Information Processing, Communication Competence, Organizational Culture, Narrative Identity, Communication Accommodation, Feminist Standpoint, etc.), not an entire category of theory (e.g., Interpersonal Communication). This must be a communication theory rather than an approach to knowing, model, or tradition.

Summarize the key assumptions/premises and claims that distinguish this theory. As you present the tenets of the theory, support your points by citing sources.

Use the Theory to Interpret the Issue/Event

Draw upon the theory to interpret the issue/event you identified in part 1. How does this theory uniquely explain what happened in this issue/event, how it happened, why it happened, and what could be done? To address this, you should touch upon the following points:

  1. How does this theory (re)frame the issue/event? Here, you should discuss how the core concepts of the theory provide insight into the communicative aspects (we encourage you to maintain a focus on the construction of meaning) of this issue by addressing the following: To which “components” of the issue/event does the theory direct your attention? In what ways does the theory provide a different perspective, vocabulary, or set of concepts to understand how the issue unfolded in the case? Another way of stating this item is this: What questions about the issue/event arise when one’s thinking is guided by this theory?
  2. WHY did the issue/event happen in the way it did? How does your chosen theory explain the forces that are contributing to the problem associated with the event/phenomenon? How does it alter your understanding of the elements involved? As a result, does the theory offer you any insight into how this situation could be changed?

Consider Benefits and Limitations of the Theory

Conclude your paper by considering the benefits and limitations of this theory. How does your application of the theory create the potential to modify participants’ (or your) “common sense” about the issue/event? Does it encourage an alternative trajectory for action? In what ways could you claim that this is an interesting explanation of your event/phenomenon?

Paper Logistics

Your paper should display the same format outlined in your first paper assignment; it should be roughly six (6) double-spaced pages (approximately 1250 words, with 12-point font, one-inch margins, and double-spacing; this does not count use of a title page or references).

Below is the Grading Rubric we’ll be using for this paper.

Note

You are free to choose a communication theory that we have NOT covered in class (i.e., one you have encountered in another COMM course or one from another chapter in the text). You should choose this option if you have found this theory interesting and exciting, and if you see distinctive value in applying it. If you pursue this route, however, you are first required to propose your choice to me for approval.

In your request, you will need to demonstrate that this theory is an actual communication theory, and that you have access to resources significant enough to understand how you’ll apply it to your event/phenomenon.

Example

Here is a sample paper for your second Theory Application Paper. This wasn’t a perfect paper (and it’s on a theory we’re not covering this semester), but we hope it gives you an idea of how to approach this assignment.
