I need help in SOCIOLOGY

Pick any three questions to answer out of the following: Feel   Free to pick an additional question for extra credit.   Your answers for each of the questions should be at least (1.5) page—double spaced—and typed.   These are thinking questions.

Use all of the resources you can find on the internet, books, magazines, social science databases etc. Examples being: JWU Library databases, Sociology Text, and search Google for relevant websites etc. so as to find cutting edge information to help you answer questions.

1.     Pick a revolution that seems to be going on somewhere in the world, and analyze it through   the three lenses of Functionalism, Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interaction.  Examples of events would be the following: The American Revolution, Hong Kong demonstrations for democracy, Market Basket Workers on strike, Ferguson– MI demonstrations, Racism, The Occupy Movement,   Syria, Russia & the Ukraine; ISIS, Black Lives Matter , Earth Day & Ecology, Organic Foods Movement etc. United States 2016 Presidential Election, CyberRevoutions—WikiLeaks  & Anonymous etc.—Pick a Revolutionary Movement of your choice.  What social, cultural, economic, political and technical forces helped to create this revolution?

2.     Some writers and social scientists have defined several contemporary generations in the following categories: Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y, and Generation Z.  Describe each of these generations relative to; age, values, size, beliefs, economic impacts and aspirations of each group.  Based on these definitions, which category do you fit in?  Does the description of the general group fit you?  And how are you different from the general description of your generation?   How do you feel that you differ from your parents generation relative to: marriage, family, work, home ownership, student debt; etc?

3.     How is deviancy defined?  Give examples of Positive and Negative types of deviance?

If the World could clone genetic deviations out of its gene pool through gene therapy or human cloning– at a genetic level –what good and bad sociological implications can you imagine?

4.     Pick one of the following cultish groups and describe the history, and in general, why many members were attracted to the group, and the positive, and or negative societal impacts.  What was the process that the “cult” used  for the re-socialization of members so as to adopt new values and lifestyles?        a.) Charles Manson—“The Family” .    b.)   The Unification Church—Sun Myung Moon.    c.)  Heavens Gate—Marshall Applewhite d.) Jim Jones—The Peoples Temple. Or more traditional groups such as: the Masons, the Skull & Bones Secret Society at Yale University, the Illuminati, etc.   If you can think of a group you would like to explore not listed above, feel free to research your choice.

5.     Select a major sociological theorist and describe the impact they had in the theoretical and applied Sociology.  Ideally you should pick your own, but possible suggestions would be: Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Jane Addams, and George Horton Cooley, George Herbert Mead,   Harriet Martineau, W.E.B. Du Bois, C. Wright Mills, Erving Goffman, etc.

6.     What is the impact of technology on cultures around the world?  Choose three major technical breakthroughs throughout the world that have had a dramatic global impact.  Describe the changes in the culture or cultures—analyze the pros and cons of the technology.

7.     Define socialization.  Research and describe three cases as to what happens to humans if deprived of “normal” socialization.  What role does socialization play relative to language acquisition?  What happened to Harry Harlow’s Rhesus monkeys deprived of normal socialization?

8.     Describe the synoptic implications of cloning, cells, animals, and people.  How might it change the culture and the definition of what it means to be human?

9.       Develop your own sociology question / and answer.

NEED IN 3 HOURSEngaging and Assessing Across Levels of Social Work Practice

NEED IN 3 HOURS

Maintaining the perspective that people are in constant interaction with their environment and the social systems therein (the Person in Environment perspective) is a key concept in the field of social work. Social work recognizes that the concerns or problems individuals face might be due to many causes. This view also supports another goal of social work which is to empower clients who are marginalized and oppressed to collaborate in the resolution of their problems or concerns as experts of their life experiences. As such, looking at a problem and assessing the needs of individuals depends on a review of the challenges they have encountered on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Assessing the situation on all three levels will provide a holistic map for goal planning. For example, you might assess a client’s individual strengths and challenges, the support or lack of support received from family, friends, and others in the client’s life regarding the issue, and the societal resources available to address the problem.

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources. Select either the course-specific case study for Abdel or Pedro. Then, consider what information you need to gather and what questions you need to ask in order to complete a proper assessment for the client, based on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels of social work practice.

Post a brief explanation of the information you need to gather and the questions you need to ask, in order to complete a proper assessment for the client in the case study you selected, based on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels of social work practice. Be sure to reference in your post which case study you selected.

Working With Immigrants and Refugees: The Case of Abdel

Abdel is a 40-year-old male, who was resettled as refugee in a major city on the East Coast. Abdel has a bachelor’s degree in theology from his home country and is fluent in English and four other languages. He fled his home country after being imprisoned and tortured for his political activism against an oppressive governmental regime. Prior to his resettlement, he spent 12 years living in a refugee camp in an African nation. Abdel was defined as a refugee by a United Nations affiliate within 6 months of arriving in the camp. He then waited 10 years before receiving word that he would be resettled to the United States and another 1½ years before arrangements were finalized.

Abdel was unable to contact his wife before escaping prison and fleeing his country; he has not been able to contact her in over 12 years, and her current whereabouts are unknown. He has heard that she remarried and had children after presuming him to be one of the missing dead. Abdel struggles between wanting to find his wife and wanting her to have a happy life uncomplicated by his survival. His mother and father passed away while he was in the camp, and he has no other family. Abdel made many friends while living in the refugee camp, and the relative of one friend now rents him a room in the United States. His housing is in the suburbs and a half-day journey from the resettlement agency that provides him the majority of his services.

One month after arriving in the United States, Abdel saw a pamphlet regarding special services available for refugee survivors of war trauma in his resettlement case manager’s office and asked for more information. After learning that the war trauma program provided medical, psychological, and legal assistance, he sent an email with details of his trauma history to the program coordinator asking to participate in the program. Abdel reported that during his 6 years of imprisonment, he had been repeatedly beaten, deprived of food and water, and denied treatment for injuries and illnesses resulting from the assaults and unhygienic living conditions. Abdel experiences chronic back pain and has significant dental damage as a result of his torture history. He expressed concerns about his difficulty finding employment and worries about how he will pay for rent and basic needs when his 8 months of refugee cash and medical welfare benefits end. He requested assistance finding employment training programs, accessing information regarding college scholarships to further his education, and securing social supports to help him feel more connected to his new community.

Abdel appeared very discouraged when he began the program. I asked him to identify what he would like his life to look like in 10 years, and Abdel said his dream was to complete a second degree in theology, resume a role as a religious leader in his new community, have stable income through gainful employment, and live in safe and independent housing. Abdel viewed his anger as negatively affecting his life and thought his goals would be hindered if he did not learn to regulate his emotions. We worked together to identify his triggers, which appeared to stem from fears regarding money and feeling a loss of control over the direction of his life. Using the strengths-based approach, I encouraged Abdel to recognize his resilience and identify qualities he possessed that could be turned into coping skills to use when he began to feel angry, overwhelmed, or fearful.

As Abdel developed confidence in his ability to manage challenging situations, he began to participate in more independent activities. He found a church with services in his native language and began developing friendships within the congregation. Abdel was able to transition from using the agency as his primary support system to having community-based supports. I continued to aid Abdel in navigating the public benefits system and applying for jobs, and his church community helped him with finding housing and applying for scholarships. By the time his 8 months of refugee cash assistance ended, Abdel was employed at a retail store and was able to afford shared housing. At a service plan review 11 months after initially seeking assistance, Abdel determined that he had achieved most of the service plan goals and could achieve the remaining goals without additional program support.

respond to two bullying discussion posts

1) To me, bullying is a method of identifying a person or persons that you can demean or harm for purposes of self-gratification or to cope with other issues going on in your life. I would describe a bully as a person who typically has a poor self-image and tries to bring others down, so they feel somewhat how they feel but in some cases, they’re just a mean-hearted person. I would describe the victim typically as a person who is isolated maybe doesn’t have a lot of friends a person who may lack confidence and are overcome by fear and anxiety by the person who is bullying them. Some options for treatment when it comes to bullying are seeing a child psychologist, family therapy or school counselor. Some methods of preventing bullying are role modeling nonviolent behavior and communicating that bullying is not acceptable. Teaching good social skills and encouraging children to communicate issues that they are having are also ways to prevent bullying. Multi-generation parent caring is a growing challenge for adults trying to raise young children while taking care of older parents. The impact has been found to be both positive and negative. The positives came in the area of emotional support and the negatives came in the area of instrumental support.

2) Bullying to me is a form of harassment. I believe it comes from the need to express dominance and control over an individual. I remember as a child I would see bullying of other children based on how they looked, where they lived, how smart they were, etc. I believe bullying starts with a bully being able to pick up the self-esteem of their victim. The victim gets harassed by the bully either physically or mentally and the victim reacts with a sense of powerlessness. The power is believed to be held by the bully and the bully is satisfied. I believe the advent of the internet and social media provides an additional environment for individuals to be bullied. Cyber bullying is more and more common. It allows a large amount of people to be exposed to bullying or allow them to be the subsequent audience of bully antics. I believe an effective treatment option or preventative measure for bullying is identifying and addressing bullying behaviors (Stopbullying.gov, 2020). This is directed towards a potential bully and addresses that bullying behaviors are not tolerated. I also believe that a victim of bullying should feel like communication is available to any trusted person to better understand how the victim is feeling and to provide a sense of comfort.

The impact on a family when a middle generation parent is caring for a child and an aging parent is called the sandwich generation phenomenon (Price, 2003). This usually involves women, who are experiencing both child rearing and parental caring to aging parents simultaneously. This phenomenon demonstrates both positive and negative results. Berit Ingersoll-Dayton, Margaret B. Neal, and Leslie Hammer state that this generation benefits from aging parents in providing care for their grandchildren (2001). Grandparents can provide an additional helping hand to reduce the load of sandwich generation parents. On the other hand, the American Psychological Association (APA) state that sandwich generation moms are more stressed due to the added pressures of taking care of their children and their parents simultaneously (2008). It is not hard to believe that with the changes of care tactics daily can affect a sandwich generation parent. The fact is that more studies should be done to address more underlying aspects of this phenomenon. Speaking from a child’s perspective, I enjoyed being close to my grandparents when they were alive and learned a lot from them when they were helping to raise me and my siblings. I do admit, that my mom seemed stressed and stretched thin to be able to support us and her aging parents. It did seem that she had to make very difficult choices to support one or the other at times.
