 Week 5 Assignment:
Career Objective and Personal Summary
1. CAREER OBJECTIVE
Most
experts advise job seekers to construct a career objective that includes a
specific job title or career/field area combined with words that summarize
applicable experience combined with a couple of other personal/professional
qualities. It is also recommended that
you complete the statement or statements with a comment as to why it is in the employer’s
best interest to hire you. To complete
both the career objective portion and the personal summary portion of this
assignment, find a job advertisement for a position for which you will
qualify upon graduation. Use this ad
to help you craft these two options for a resume.
An
example of a career objective would be something like this: “Experienced Logistics specialist seeking a
position as an Operations Manager that requires strategic thinking and strong
financial skills to assist with budget management,
estimating, forecasting.†Now let’s try
your hand at writing one using the following structure. Write your own objective
under the template below. Feel free to
create more than one objective for different positions that you may be
interested in.
(Your current
position/qualification)……..seeking(name of a degree-related position you desire)…..
………. that requires(use some examples of
technical/personal related skills or experience you now possess)….. to assist with (include tasks or desired skills
as mentioned in the company’s job advertisement.)

2. PERSONAL SUMMARY
Quite
often job seekers prefer to include a personal summary in their resumes in
place of a specific career objective.
Some job seekers include both.
This exercise will give you practice at creating your own personal
summary. This section of a resume can be
entitled “Personal Summary,†or sometimes it may be called
“Skills/Achievements.†Take a look at the Skills/Achievement statements in the
sample resume located on pg. 93 of our textbook. You will notice that this section includes
both competencies or skills and achievements or experiences. An example of a
personal summary could look something like this: Five years experience installing and
servicing local area network. Work well under tight deadline and within diverse
teams. Customer service oriented with
ability to problem solve and find creative alternatives. Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability
to adapt to quickly changing situations.
Think
about some noteworthy experience you may be able to bring to an employer. Then
reflect on some skills/achievements or traits that reflect who you are or what
you can do in a work setting. Write your personal summary statements below and
include at least 3-4 different statements that summarize your talents. This can
be written in a paragraph or you can use bulleted phrases.

Draft a recruitment ad for a trade journal to advertise a job opening at your company. Have a friend critique it, as well as, if possible, a knowledgeable HR professional from a local company. Summarize their suggestions for improvement and incorporate them into a final draft.

Problem 1Assume a voter has a strict preference over any two candidates in the set of Clinton, Obama

Problem 1Assume a voter has a strict preference over any two candidates in the set of Clinton, Obama and Edwards; in other words, it is not the case that he is indifferent between some two candidates in this set. In addition, assume that the voter is not rational.(1) Prove that a voter who prefers Obama over Clinton has to prefer Edwards over Obama and Clinton over Edwards. Present your reasoning.(2) Prove that if all voters are not rational then either (i) all of them have identical preferences or (ii) the set of all voters is split into two subsets such that in each subset all voters have identical preferences.Problem 2Let’s go back to explaining the survey data in which 60% chose Edwards over Obama, 60%chose Edwards over Clinton, 60% chose Clinton over Obama and then when asked to cast a single vote for one of the three candidates, 45% chose Clinton, 30% Obama, and 25%Edwards.(1) Prove that it is not possible that all voters are rational (have transitive preferences.)(2) Suppose now that the distribution of votes was not 45% chose Clinton, 30% Obama, and25% Edwards but 38% Clinton, 32% Obama and 30% Edwards; pair-wise data remains unchanged. Prove that it is possible now that all voters are rational (have transitive preferences) and calculate the percentage of votes for each of the six different orderings of the three candidates.

Assignment 2: LASA 1: Legal and Ethical Leadership and Management

Mathis, Inc. is a designer and manufacturer of women’s clothing and specializes in high-end women’s winter fashions. Normandale, a retailer, sells high-end products in malls throughout the country. With Mathis’s high costs, Normandale is unable to make a profit from the sale of Mathis’s products.

Countess Lori-Ann (CLA) is a Mathis competitor. Normandale sends photographs and samples of the Mathis line to CLA and instructs them to make an identical line at a lower price. Mathis labels are easily discernable in the photographs and the samples have the Mathis label attached. CLA copies the Mathis line for Normandale.

CLA sells the clothing to Normandale at a low price allowing Normandale to sell the products for a total gross profit of nearly $3 million, an increase of nearly 50% over its sale of Mathis products. Mathis discovers that Normandale is selling counterfeit products, and sends several cease-and-desist letters to them—to no avail. Mathis then sues Normandale alleging Normandale has engaged in illegal conduct. Normandale counters that it did nothing wrong.

Research business law in regard to protection of intellectual property, using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Based on the facts of the case and research, write an analytical paper. In the paper, respond to the following questions:

  • Was it ethical for Normandale to sell the alleged knock-off products at a lower price? Explain.
  • What federal or state laws protect owners of intellectual property?  How do they apply here? Explain.
  • What damages, if any, has Mathis suffered because of Normandale’s conduct? Explain.
  • What are the differing views on the social responsibility of corporations like Normandale?
  • What ethical code could Normandale implement to prevent similar incidents in the future?
  • Do the owners of Normandale have personal liability to Mathis for damages?  Explain.
  • Do the owners of Normandale have personal criminal liability for their conduct and that of the business?  Explain.

Write a five-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards for writing style to your work.

Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M3_A2.doc.

Assignment 2: LASA 1: Consultant Presentation (CO 1, 2, 3

Wide Horizons Travel Agency Inc. has recently acquired Vista Travel LLC as part of a multimillion dollar expansion plan.  Several of the employees from Vista were moved to the Wide Horizon Corporate offices in Houston from their original home office in Detroit.  The home offices are in the process of being closed and there is a skeleton staff left there taking care of the closure.

The IT team from Wide Horizons is working on transferring the IT infrastructure of Vista to the latest Office technology from Microsoft™, a brand new network and a new phone system. Although over 70% of Vista’s workforce made the move to Wide Horizons, the senior managers are noticing a marked drop in the amount of business that Wide Horizons is taking in the form of bookings and certainly not the uptick that was expected with an increase in the sales force of 35%.

This lack of performance is putting a strain on the senior management team who are facing having to cut back on their expansion plans due to lack of funds. There is even some talk of layoffs. Wide Horizons is in need of advice and they are looking for a consultant to come in and review their systems, policies, procedures and training. They also need the consultant to try to determine the problem and make recommendations to address any deficiencies that are found in an effort to get the company back on track.

You have been hired as the consultant for Wide Horizons and asked to deliver a PowerPoint Presentation with your recommendations to the senior management team.

Your PowerPoint should have at least 10-15 slides not including any Title, Welcome, Questions or Reference slides. Use the notes section in PowerPoint to clarify your points. Use at least three scholarly resources when preparing your presentation.
