The focus of the capstone project is to solve a contemporary social and criminal justice issue through the application of information from a variety of related fields, which may include sociology, law, psychology, and ethics. In developing a proposed solution to a modern social and criminal justice issue, you are encouraged to use scholarly and primary sources, multimedia, and interviews with professionals in the field (if possible) to identify and devise a workable plan. Within the Final Capstone Project, complete the following: Identify a clear thesis statement to address your chosen criminal and social justice issue. Summarize your chosen social and criminal justice issue. Propose the resolution to the social and criminal justice issue. Examine the operations of the criminal justice system as it relates to your chosen issue and resolution. This may include operations related to crime scene investigation techniques and security; the collection, preservation and presentation of evidence; and processes related to correctional institutions, incarceration, and release. Analyze how the criminal and social justice theories (in relation to the United States Constitution) and landmark U.S. Supreme Court decisions impact your chosen issue and support your resolution. Explain how social and criminal justice systems promote social equality and fairness for all and how this impacts your issue and resolution. Consider how poverty, racism, and religion apply to contemporary social and criminal justice. Assess how the centralization of criminal justice agencies in the United States, The Patriot Act, the U.S. Homeland Security Act, and international aspects of social and criminal justice impact your issue and resolution. Identify and describe at least two careers in criminal justice (existing or to-be-created) for agencies that may be involved in addressing the issue and resolution you have chosen.

Choose one (1) of the three (3) reading selections from the list of topic choices below. The focus is on brief but important primary source material written by major authors. Read the selections  as identified with each topic below. Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph essay (250 words minimum) which analyzes the “surprise ending” of the reading selection.

Topic Choices

  • Reading selection from Descartes’ Discourse on the Method (Part IV). Descartes begins with a  proof of one basic conclusion and ends with a proof of something much grander. Remember to focus on the surprise and point of realization, not the details of the philosophical argument. Read Part IV of the Discourse on the Method located athttp://www.earlymoderntexts.com/authors/descartes.html. This is only four or five (4 or 5) pages of the larger work.
  • Reading selection of Swift’s A Modest Proposal. It is essential to recognize the genre of this work, as discussed in our class text, which you should consult and cite. Swift promotes a radical solution, but subtle options are mentioned. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. Read and focus on A Modest Proposal located athttp://www.victorianweb.org/previctorian/swift/modest.html
  • Two (2) reading selections from Voltaire’s Candide. Consider how these readings start and end in terms of the action and the beliefs. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. These selections can be found on pp. 834-835 in the textbook. In addition, consult the class text at pp. 815-817.

For the reading selection you choose:

  1. Clearly state in your own words the “surprise ending” in the reading you selected. Clearly identify the point in the reading when you realized that there were elements in the reading that surprised you. Not all of the surprises come at the end.
  2. Evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the “surprise ending” that was different from what you expected.

Role of the Counselor in the Community

Role of the Counselor in the Community

Nine-year-old Wanda’s teacher notices that for the past few weeks, Wanda has not been talking to her friends and is always sitting alone in a corner. After talking to Wanda’s friends, the teacher finds out that Wanda’s sixteen-year-old brother was killed in a gang fight two months ago and her parents have since separated. The teacher talks to her friend Daphne, a counselor, to see if there is anything she can do about Wanda. She wants to know if there is any way in which children and families affected by exposure to violence can be assisted with emotional impact of these events. The teacher also asks Daphne, in the role of a counselor, to call Wanda’s parents to see if they would be willing to talk with her about the death of their son, their separation, and Wanda’s behavior at school. Daphne is not employed or affiliated with the school.

What would be Daphne’s role, as a counselor, in helping the teacher?

What do you see as important roles of a counselor working in a community?

What are the ethical responsibilities that counselors and human services professionals hold toward the community? When answering this question identify the ethical code number and definition, using your own words, of the ethical responsibilities of these professionals.

Briefly speak how you, as an ethical counselor, would respond to the teacher’s request for you to speak with Wanda and her family.

Freedom or Determinism?

You have read about Jean Paul Sartre and Peter Singer, philosophers who look at freedom from their own personal perspectives. Which one do you think makes the most sense today? Will they hold up over the years?

Then think about how they view religion. Which one do you think matches your own beliefs the best?

Please least 400 words, no fancy language, just regular.

The learning objective of this course project is to help students gain an in-depth understanding of a selected topic or issue related to juvenile justice. In addition, students will demonstrate their critical thinking abilities by presenting both sides of an issue and developing their own position on the issue. The paper should represent your best professional writing and work. As such, students should pay careful attention to paragraphing, sentence structure, quotation conventions, spelling, appropriate citation, and other aspects of grammar. Requirements Each student will write an 8 – 10 page typed double-spaced position or issue paper on a particular juvenile justice issue. Students will select a relevant juvenile justice issue, such as the origins of juvenile justice, the differences between juvenile justice and adult criminal justice, constitutional rights and juvenile justice, the juvenile death penalty, juvenile delinquency prevention, juvenile gangs, and so forth. Once the issue has been selected and approved by the instructor, students will write a description of the issue, discussing both sides of the issue, and close by stating their reasoned position on the issue. The paper must include at least ten scholarly sources and must be in APA style. It is a good idea to develop an outline of your project that serves as a project guide. Students will submit various sections of the paper as the course progresses (see course deliverables below).
