Reflection 5 – Geography is Everywhere The course is quickly drawing to a close! We have covered many topics within the field of human geography, but (alas) there are even more that we have not had time to cover. In this final reflection, you will write about some cultural or social process and/or organization *not* covered in this course that can be studied geographically; in other words, a cultural or social phenomenon that can be viewed using a geographic perspective. This course has asked you to think like a geographer; now it is your chance to show off this skill! Include the following content in this reflection. (1 point)A creative title for your reflection. (3 points) Identify and describe the topic you choose in your own words. Be sure to include all of the relevant details, including any or all of the following (if applicable): the setting (that is, the location), the people involved, and associated events, circumstances, or situations. (3 points)Explain how this topic is geographical in nature, given your understanding of the geographic perspective that we discuss in Lesson 1 and in Chapter 1 of your textbook. In your explanation, you must identify the lesson the topic would fit in or give the name of a new lesson that would include this topic. In addressing this, be sure to make clear and specific connections with and references to the course material. In this part, it should be obvious to your instructor that you have read the material and gained knowledge. (3 points) Next, locate an article or map from a credible news source that relates to your topic, and list one thing (idea, concept, piece of information, et cetera) from that article that is relevant to your topic and the geography of your topic. You must Include a proper citation and full reference for the article. (3 points) Conclude your response by discussing any personal connection to this topic, (Why did you select this topic?) and how a greater understanding and knowledge of it could benefit you (and all students) in the future. In other words, make a compelling case for why this topic is appropriate for a human geography course. In this last part, you should draw a conclusion to your writing while sharing your thoughts and reflections. Two points out of the total fifteen points for every journal entry are allocated for quality of writing and grammar.

The question: Select a company of interest to you and a primary competitor of that company. The companies must be publicly traded and they should not be financial institutions such as banks, insurance companies, or securities firms. They also must not be non-profit organizations. You might access www.hoovers.com and/or http://finance.yahoo.com for ideas about potential companies and competitor firms. After selecting a company of interest and a competitor, go to the investor relations area of the companies' websites and view their most recent annual report. Write a typical analysis of a report in which you address the following: 1. Assess the nature of the operation of each company. Describe the risks that each company seems to face as it strives for higher profitability and valuation in the financial markets. 2. Present the past 2 years of financial statements (balance sheet and income statements) for each company in a single table. Discuss the trends you see in the key metrics as well as the comparisons you can make between the companies from these statements. 3. Recommend relevant financial ratios and compare these ratios across the two companies. Present the ratios calculations in a table format using Excel, and then copy and paste that table into your report. The ratios should include profitability, liquidity or short-term solvency, debt management, inventory management, accounts receivable management, and the decomposition of the ROE. 4. Evaluate each ratio category and form a conclusion regarding which company appears to be healthier for each category as well as overall. Be sure to spend meaningful effort to assess and discuss the ROE decomposition and the meanings you take from it. Support your assessment with at least three resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included. Your report should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Support your report with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included. Length: 10 pages (not including title and reference pages) And each page must have: 150 word at least.

Your company is in need of someone to fill a new position. The spot calls for some very specific skills, education, and experience, but you happen to have an old friend who exactly fits the bill. In addition, he has mentioned to you that he feels it is time to make a change and has been contemplating looking for a new job. You give him a call and he says that he is very interested, so you call the head of the department in question and tell him about your friend. The department head is very excited and tells you to have him call for an interview. You do and everything seems fine. Several weeks pass and your friend calls you and asks if you have any idea what happened with the job. He interviewed and everything went well, but he never heard back and just learned that the position had been filled with someone who has no experience and a much different background. You call the department head and relay the question. After some hemming and hawing, the department head makes some vague statement about your friend not being a "good fit." He was afraid that your friend's "accent" might make it difficult for him to be understood, and he was concerned about his work ethic since he came from a cultural background that has a more "laidback" work ethic. You hang up and think about it. Your friend is from Jamaica and does have an accent and very relaxed personality, but is certainly not lazy. Then you realize that he is also a minority and that this particular department not only has no minority employees, but never has had one. What do you do? Is the department head being ethnocentric or prejudiced? Do you tell your friend what you were told? Do you call someone higher up and express your concerns? Do you do nothing at all? LECTURERS COMMENT: Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin. The Civil Rights Act made companies to think about giving everyone an equal opportunity. Most companies recognize the importance of responsibility for compliance with the laws. If laws are in place, why do we continue to have discrimination at workplace?

A two page brief paper 1 answer below »

I need a two page brief paper based on the given materials.

Financial Management research paper

The research paper assignment is worth 220 points or 22% of the course grade. A grade of C or better is required as per MBA policy as this is the Final Assessment for the course.

The objectives/purpose of the research paper project are to enable you to do a comprehensive financial analysis of a publicly traded corporation; and provide you with substantial information for you to make recommendations regarding investing in this corporation.

Your financial analysis report will be driven by a rigorous ratio analysis, and aggressively supplemented with your written analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of the data.

Your research should be strategically driven by two probing questions:

-Would you invest your financial capital in the selected firm as a shareholder?

-Would you invest your human and intellectual capital in the firm as an employee?

Steps in preparation of financial analysis report:

  1. Select a publicly held company

  1. Select a benchmark firm to compare your company against. The benchmark firm is typically the largest competitor.

  1. Obtain the firm’s balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows for

the past 5 years. Download or read the firm’s annual report.

4.)  Go to: http://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/webusers.htm

Research EDGAR’s database for additional SEC report filings: 8-k, 10-Q.

  1. The following table is the type of Excel or Word table that should be used to gather and report your ratio and financial performance data. Note the 5 financial diagnostic categories that should be used in your analysis.

Financial diagnostic categories  Chosen company   vs.  Benchmark competitor

1.)  Liquidity of short-term assets

-Current ratio

-Cash ratio

-Quick ratio

-Current ratio

-Cash ratio

-Quick ratio

2.)  Long-term debt-paying ability

Use 2-3 ratios per diagnostic category. Place your ratio calculations in the table for your selected companies—primary company and benchmark competitor. Using 5 diagnostic categories, and 3 ratios to assess each category, results in 15 ratio measures per company that will be compared side by side.

6.)  To validate your research, 5 years of data should be analyzed.

7.) The financial analysis report must be written properly. They must include a title page, a table of contents, and a reference page. For both midterm and final report, information sources from the web, etc. must be cited properly, using APA style.

This means that every table that you cut and pasted or typed from the web must have a source at the bottom of the table AND that citing must also be included in a reference page at the end of the report.

The parts of the research paper are discussed below. The completed report (parts a through h) is due day 7 of week 6. Your project should include:

  1. An overview of the corporation.

    1. Provide general information regarding the type of business, products and/or services, location of headquarters, name of CEO, number of employees, and countries of operation, etc.

    1. The latest financial statements

      1. Get the income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement, and the statement of owners’ equity for the past fiscal year. Create Turnitin-friendly versions of the financial statements; do not just ‘cut and paste’ them in your report. Do not forget to cite the source under each statement.

      2. If you cannot cut and paste them, you may have to type in the information in a table in your report.

    1. A summary of each financial statement

      1. Take each statement and state the key parts in words. Tell a story from each of the financial statements. For example, for the income statement, the story starts like, “Total Revenues in 2010 were $10 billion, while Cost of Goods Sold were $8 billion, leaving a gross profit margin of $2 billion, or 20 percent of total revenues….After taking out interest and taxes from EBIT, the net income was $0.5 billion, or 5 percent of total revenues.”

    1. Ratio calculation (include 5 major types of ratios. Refer to chapter 3, Analysis of Financial Statements)

      1. Organization of this section is based on the FIVE types of ratios listed in the text book. Calculate the ratios from the financial statements in part c above using Excel or your calculator and present them in a table.

      2. Find industry financial ratios online (eg. Yahoo.com) and compare your corporation’s ratios to these industry ratios.

      3. Present your results following the five types of ratios discussed in part d.

      4. A table with both corporation and industry ratios is required;

    2. Discussion of key statistics provided by sources like Yahoo finance.

      1. There are many different other statistics available for your corporation. These include market value, beta, and diluted EPS, etc. Discuss some of the key statistics that you think can assist you to determine if this corporation is a good buy or sell.

    1. For you to decide if a corporation’s stock is a good buy or sell, you must forecast several key variables, including the stock price.

      1. Use historical prices (5 years of monthly data recommended) and forecast the stock price for the next year. Use regression analysis, and/or moving average, etc. to create your forecast.

      2. Create a graph from the historical data and show your forecast on the same graph. You can add a trend line to the graph to help you with a forecast. Include the graph in your report.

      3. You need to say specifically what the forecasted value of the stock price is.

      4. You must address the question, “Is this forecast reasonable?” Must you amend your analysis to get a more reasonable forecast?

    1. Other information pertinent to the corporation that could affect its future performance and stock price.

      1. This could include dividend policy, capital structure, bond ratings, expert opinions on TV, new projects, litigation, regulation, etc. Search for information on the web regarding this corporation. Look at company complaint blogs, etc.

    1. Recommendation regarding the future of this corporation.

      1. Is the stock a good buy, average buy, or a poor buy (implying a good sell)?

      2. Include a justification of your recommendation based on your analysis and research.
