What is the purpose and scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA)?

1. What is the purpose and scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA)? From your readings, one link provided in this context refers to some of the key titles/policies which make American society more accessible to persons with disabilities.

2. Briefly describe any two of the five titles(employment, public services, public accommodations, telecommunications, miscellaneous) from the link. Why do you think it is important to have these tenets in place, and what purpose do they serve towards creating a more equitable society?

3. Research a court case in which the injured party is alleged to have been victimized by a breach of the ADA. Summarize the case (in your own words). Was the outcome advantageous to persons with disabilities? Why? Why not?

Yvonne’s Story Part 2

“My parents didn’t want me when I was young.  From age 10, I was placed with various relatives, and eventually in a series of foster homes.  By the time I was 15, I had run away, but no one tried to find me.  At 16, I gave birth to my first child, who is now 7.  Her father did not see me through the pregnancy.  I was alone in the hospital when I had her.

There were two other important men in my life.  The father of my second child, now age 4, worked and helped support us.  He was a good guy, except when he drank.  Then he would sometimes get violent, and very jealous. Sometimes, he hit me.  Often he yelled at me and called me names.  I finally couldn’t take it anymore and managed to get to the domestic violence shelter. They helped me get my current apartment, which is Section 8 housing.  I only have to pay $8 a month for rent. Then I became pregnant with my third child.  Her father does give me some money from time to time, and he visits her.

I did finish high school and worked as a nurse’s aide, but I lost my job because I began having severe seizures.  I saw a doctor, and he prescribed medication, which helped.  About 6 months ago, I ran out of the medication.  I have no car and no money to take a cab to the doctor.  I don’t have anyone I can ask.  Since I’ve been off the medication, I am having seizures several times a day.  They really wipe me out, and so I sleep a lot.  I love my kids and I know I’m not taking care of them the way I should, but I don’t know how to get the help I need.”

1. What would be the 2 next steps that you would take to help Yvonne, or that you would help Yvonne to take herself?

2. What are 2 community resources that you would involve to support Yvonne and her family?

Public Health

Milestone Three Guidelines and Rubric

Overview: This assignment constitutes the third step of your final project. The final project is a presentation exploring public health goals and a public health response to a health problem.

Prompt: You will examine public health interventions published in scholarly literature for how they addressed your selected public health issue.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

III. Public Health Interventions (Milestone Three – AT LEAST TWO PUBLISHED PUBLIC HEALTH INTERVENTIONS)

A. Theoretical basis of intervention: Analyze at least two published public health interventions used to address the issue, describing both the interventions and the theoretical basis of each. In other words, what were the intervention strategies used to address this problem and what was the rationale (the thinking behind the strategy, why the strategy works) for those actions, according to your resource?

B. Primary, Secondary, or Tertiary: Explain how the selected interventions reflect primary, secondary, and/or tertiary intervention strategies for public health prevention.

C. Which social determinant addressed: Explain how the interventions address and/or mitigate the social determinants of the issue (health and healthcare disparities associated with each). Remember that social determinants are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age.

Interpersonal Communication: Communication Barriers

Preamble

As you study interpersonal communication, you begin to seriously understand that the skills learned in this course are useful for every aspect of your life. Truth. You will thank me later.

  • Communicating: Sending, Receiving, Interpreting Information

There are several factors that will affect how messages are sent, received and interpreted. As you have been reading in your text as well, we explore words and then a lot more than just words in interpersonal communication. We also focus on things like tone, volume, accents, clothing, environment, gender, age, socio-economic status, demographics, etc. These are all factors that will impact communication. While there are several factors that could be problematic in this video, I encourage you to explore only the communication factors as you respond to this question.

Instructions: Watch these videos and answer the questions. You must watch each video to the end.

  • Video #1: This video is about communication and miscommunication

Question 1:

What are some of the factors in this communication [message sending/receiving/interpreting] that were problematic and could affect the way these parties communicate and therefore their interpersonal relationships? Identify 5 factors and then explain them.

Grading: This assignment will be graded solely on the number of factors that you identify and explain.

  1. You must explain each factor thoroughly (everything) to get the full points.
  2. Partial points will be awarded for partial explanations.
  3. Each factor that you identify (and explain) is worth 5-points.

Worth: This question is worth: 25 points.

Instructions: Please watch these videos and answer the questions. You must watch this video to the end.

Question 2: Think interpersonal communication, then answer these questions:

  1. What were some of the most informative and instructive pieces of information you learned about communication from this video?
  2. Explain each piece of information, including why YOU found them personally informative and instructive? What about YOU that make these instructive?

We live in an age of immediate communication and employers are using new technology tactics to verify information on prospective or current employees. Critically review your own Facebook, LinkedIn, or other online social networking site. What information is appropriate to share in these forums? What information should not be shared and why? Should employers or any other interested professional parties have the right to seek out these personal postings and make decisions about you based on what they see and read? Why or why not?
