Social Science

A Day in the Life as a Social Scientist

This is a written Assignment in which you will address the following topic:

Imagine that you are a social scientist. Choose a medical event that could impact the life of someone you know and explore it from one of the social science professions as listed below. For privacy reasons, do not disclose any real medical event or the name of an actual person.

Part 1: Choose a profession

The list of professions on page five in your text includes:

  • Geographer
  • Sociologist
  • Anthropologist
  • Political Scientist
  • Psychologist

Part 2: Choose a medical event, such as cancer. Remember, for privacy reasons, do not connect the event to the name of an actual person.

Part 3: Assume the role

Chapter one in your text describes the methods that social science professionals use in the field. Use the following outline to explore the medical event as a social science professional. Refer to pp.14 -15 in your text, Social Science: An Introduction to the Study of Society, Fourteenth Edition, for more details.

  1. Observe.
  2. Define the problem.
  3. Review the literature and research. Use the Kaplan Library to familiarize yourself with the way other professionals have discussed the event.
  4. Formulate a hypothesis.
  5. Imagine how you would solve the problem from the viewpoint of your chosen profession for this Assignment.

Whenever you are doing your research, it is helpful to jot down notes as you read. This way you remember the important points and do not have to go back and reread. When taking notes, make sure you are careful to mark any word-for-word excerpts with quotation marks. This will remind you that these are exact quotes from the reading and so will either need to be correctly quoted and cited or paraphrased and cited. This will help you avoid plagiarism when you go to write your paper because you will know where all your information came from!

Provide a hypothetical case study example of a client for which you will conduct a functional behavioral assessment. Describe the clients’ age, gender, socioeconomic status, race, disability, work/home life/environment, preferences, presenting problem, target behavior(s), available data, etc.). Conclude with the selection of at least one direct and one indirect method of assessment based on your preliminary assessment of the client, and provide a rationale or justification for each method which you select.

QUESTION (B)

social problems

In order to do understand and develop a sociological imagination, we must be able to see a social problem from many perspectives. This is the goal of our first discussion. For example, experts are warning us about the dangers of obesity, a problem for both individuals and society. While some may suggest obesity is simply the result of individual choices, how did so many people suddenly begin to make such bad choices? Rather than the result of individual choices, perhaps obesity is the result of dietary options available to our society. This might explain variations in obesity rates from one geographic region to another. Wealth distribution, health care, and even the availability of food may also explain differing rates of obesity. In short, to those who have developed the sociological imagination, a variety of factors are clearly behind this epidemic of obesity.

After reading the assigned chapters in the textbook and visiting the website, Overweight and obesity, discuss each of the following points:

  1. Using the definition provided by the text, define how obesity could be categorized as a social problem.
    • What are examples of individual and societal factors leading to obesity?
    • What are the individual and social consequences of doing nothing to address this problem?
  2. Theoretical perspectives
    • How would a conflict theorist explain the problem of obesity?
    • How would a functionalist explain the problem of obesity?
    • How would a symbolic interactionist explain the problem of obesity?
  3. Based on your research, and personal reflection on which theoretical perspective is most like your own views, which theory does the best job at explaining the causes of obesity?  Based on this analysis, explain why or why not the issue of obesity should be addressed as a social problem.

argument paper 3 to 5 pages war on drugs

The “war on drugs” has become a war on America’s minorities. topic that needs to be wrote about.

3 to 5 pages

The word argument usually conjures up images of agitated people disagreeing with each other, often emotionally. In academic writing, the argument or persuasive essay is not about confrontation. Instead, this essay relies on detailed evidence, cool logic, and precise language to persuade readers to accept a viewpoint or to take an action. This ability to make a reasonable, persuasive case for your point of view can be one of the most important skills for your advancement in the workplace.

For this Individual Project, you should either choose one of the topics below or devise one of your own (with your instructor’s approval) and write a short argument or persuasive essay. As you discovered in your reading, you will assert a position on the topic and then defend that position so well that others might agree with you. Remember, the argument or persuasive essay is not a personal rant. Your goal is to appear unbiased.

One of the ways of achieving a level of objectivity is to consider counterarguments against your position. Therefore, at least one of your paragraphs should include some discussion of a counterargument. For example, if you write in favor of abolishing the death penalty, you might devote some discussion to the loved ones of a murder victim, the need for these survivors to gain closure, or even their demands that the perpetrator meet a similar fate as the loved one taken from them.

Cold War

Background: After the Second World War, the US embarked on what came to be known as the Cold War against the Soviet Union. Special Considerations in Testing 2

Special Considerations in Testing

Our psychologist, Keith, has been asked to conduct a psychoeducational evaluation on 8-year old Melanie. Melanie’s teacher and parents are concerned because she is having significant difficulty reading and comprehending information. She also has a hard time paying attention and is always talking out in class. She is a sweet girl and gets along well with others, but her challenges are negatively impacting her grades and interrupting the learning of those around her.

As Keith plans his assessment of Melanie’s difficulties, what issues does he need to consider in order to increase the validity of the assessment?

    • Remember to consider Melanie’s age and testing with students who might have special needs.
    • Explain what testing accommodations Keith might need to make given Melanie’s challenges and why.
    • What impact could making accommodations have on standardization and, as a result, interpretation of the results?
    • What test format would best meet Melanie’s needs (e.g., type of test, group vs. individual, etc.)? Why?
    • Reflect on what you have learned about the history of assessment. How might Keith’s decisions differ today compared to the beginnings of psychological assessment?
