CHILD BEAUTY PAGEANTS SHOULD BE BANNED

Based on your work in Units 1 and 2, create a detailed sentence outline for your research paper.

Your outline should include the following:

  • Thesis statement: Because you are writing an argument or persuasive paper, your thesis must state a clear stance on the topic that you have selected. The thesis should be written in the third person and not be more than one sentence long. This thesis does not have to be the same as your thesis in the Unit 1 Individual Project. Your new thesis will most likely reflect the research and reflection that you have done since then. You may have even changed your initial stance.
  • Main points or claims: You should include at least 3 main points or claims to support your thesis. These main points should be complete sentences that are phrased entirely in your own words. The main points represent a synthesis of your research on the topic: source readings, discussion with others, and personal reflection combined to produce your thesis. These are not necessarily the same main points that you used in your Unit 1 IP. Because you have researched this topic, you may have gained additional insights, evidence, and arguments that will be reflected in this new thesis and main points.
  • Notations of source usage: Beneath each main point, you should indicate how information from sources may be used to support each point. Because you have not yet written the paper, you do not know for sure how you will use the information from your sources. You are still in the planning stage; however, at this stage, you should be able to indicate with some accuracy how source material will help you develop your main points. Be sure to provide in-text citations.
  • APA reference list: Provide an alphabetized list of the sources that you plan to use to support your main points. These do not have to be the same sources that you listed in the Unit 2 IP. Each of the sources should be listed as a reference citation in correct APA style. This list should have the word “References” in boldface at the top.

Drama Research – is this doable for today?

Drama Paper: Mini-research paper (4-5 pages, Times Roman 12, double-spaced)

In this paper, as in our previous assignments, you will be doing a close reading, but with two differences: (1) this paper asks you to examine two works and compare/contrast them, and (2) this paper requires research.  In this paper, you will compare and contrast Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House.  Your larger purpose in comparing/contrasting them is to consider the concept of tragedy.  Your thesis should make an assertion about the nature of tragedy in both works.

This paper will address the following questions:

  • How are these two plays different?  Do these differences tell us something about the nature of tragedy?
  • How are these two plays similar?  Do these similarities tell us something about the nature of tragedy, or about the difference between Shakespearean drama and “modern” theater?

In this assignment, you are confined to discussing these two plays, but within this framework, you are free to choose what order to address these questions in and how to create a thesis that focuses your discussion.  Feel free to emphasize comparison and de-emphasize contrast or vice-versa, as long as in some way you have done both.  Be sure to give equal time to both plays, however.

It is also up to you how to use research in this paper.  My recommendation is that you use it to bolster your discussion of tragedy, drawing from scholarly sources to create your definitions, but you may also want to use articles on the plays themselves to help with your readings.  This is fine, as long as the following conditions are met:

  1. All sources must be cited correctly using MLA documentation.  This includes (1) in-text citations and (2) a Works Cited page.
  2. You must use at least five sources.  There is no maximum: if you would like to include more sources, that’s fine, but since our objective is close reading, it’s definitely not necessary.

Length: This is a lot of material to cover in 4-5 pages.  This means you need to be very concise.  Do not go over five pages!  Less is more.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

Please answer the following ten questions using only your text and lecture notes as sources.  Cite your answers, and be specific in your examples. Use your own word for all the answers

1. Define the term “politics”.

2. Explain your understanding of the term “office politics” and why it is important to acknowledge its existence.  This is covered in the lecture notes.

3. Define “federalism”.  Give an example of something in your wallet that comes from the federal, state and special district levels of government.

4. Define the terms “block grant” and “matching grant”.  What is the difference between them?

5. Explain the Ninth (IX) Amendment.  Who benefits from it?

6. What are the “checks and balances” indicated in the Constitution?  List and explain at least two.

7. Explain why Article II of the Constitution is so vague as to the specific duties of the President?

8. Explain the Supreme Court decision in District of Columbia vs. Heller. Which amendment is affected by this decision?  Does this decision apply to the states?

9. Define “direct democracy”.  Do we practice this in California?  If so, explain how we implement this.

10. What are “collective goods”?  Explain the concept and illustrate it with an example.

Briefly explain why you agree or disagree with their views.

I really enjoyed viewing the cognitive therapy session, I enjoyed the structure. I also loved that the client was very involved and there was a goal set and the counselor and Helen knew they were to work together. That began the recognition of socialization in the session. Throughout the duration of the counseling session, Helen and her counselor delved into a structured session which involved them going through Helen’s “Beck Depression Inventory” as well as a session building worksheet that helps them connect the sessions and allows Helen to process. In my opinion I think that this technique was quite effective. It was becoming clear that Helen was developing rapport with her counselor and having them work together helped that come to pass.

One of the ideas that the counselor shared were automatic thoughts. She gave a situation and the told Helen that there will be a thought after different situations and the emotional response that then ensues from the situation and lastly the behavior that comes from the situation. The goal is to target thoughts and see if the thoughts are accurate. The counselor wants Helen to experience functional thoughts that allow Helen to feel better. If a problem arises as they are going through Helen’s thoughts they will then need to work together to problem solve. This was another example of the counselor implementing socializing the client to the therapy. Helen and her counselor went through dysfunctional thought record together which helped Helen realize what automatic thoughts were and practice with her counselor. Helen was then given homework to go through one thought a day using the thought record as an example.

I read about cognitive therapy and really enjoyed the explanation that came from the PsychCentral website. The article About Cognitive Psychotherapy, explains that cognitive therapy deals with our thoughts with that come from how we feel (Herkov, 2006). In the session I believe t.he counselor did a great job at working with Helen to view her thoughts and feelings and begin to help Helen look into the source of the thoughts. I could not think of much I would have done differently besides lighten Helen’s homework load. Since she was asked to face one of her dysfunctional thoughts by talking to her husband about watching the kids on the weekend I would have asked her to try to work through three automatic thoughts before the next visit.

Comparison of Psychological and Physical Health

Comparison of Psychological and Physical Health

One in three people in the United States are reported to have some diagnosable psychological disorder.  This means each one of us either has a family member or close friend who has a psychological disorder.  You have all also undoubtedly had experience with friends or family members who have had medical illnesses.  Please respond to the following questions.

  1. How are patients with psychological disorders treated differently than are patients with medical illnesses?
  2. Visitation by non-family members is considered a positive support action that is encouraged and appreciated when we have a close friend in a medical hospital.  Would similar support be sought if the family member was in a mental hospital?  Discuss your thoughts on this subject.
  3. This next section will require some online research.  Do medical hospitals have the same levels of support staff that mental hospitals have?  How much are medical nurses paid?  What is the ratio of patients to nurses?  How much are mental health workers paid?  What is the ratio of mental patients to mental health workers?  Make sure you include the URLs for the websites you used to conduct your research.  Discuss your findings.  Please make sure that you use your own words, your paper will go to Turnitin before it comes to me.

Your paper should be at least 500 words.
