Effective Questioning

Jacob, a 13-year-old male, is caught shoplifting a hoodie at a local department store. Security detained Jacob and called the police. Jacob was then interviewed at the local police station. His parents were called and attended his interview with the detective.

The detective asks Jacob, “Why did you take the garment? Didn’t you think you would be caught? What did you think your parents would say? Why did you do such a stupid thing?”

  • What do you think is wrong in this scenario?
  • What do you think Jacob is feeling?
  • What do you think Jacob’s nonverbal behavior would exhibit?
  • If you were the detective, how would your questions differ? Give an example of three questions you would have presented Jacob.
  • What type of interview strategy would you have used?
  • In what type of environment would you conduct the interview?

Respond to at least two other posts and cite, as appropriate, the online course, the textbook, and other credible, scholarly sources to substantiate the points you are making.

Effective Parenting

Assignment 1: Discussion—Effective Punishment

One aspect of raising healthy children is understanding how to best provide correction when they make poor choices or behave in unacceptable ways. Over the years, there has been much debate over the most effective form of punishment for children. As part of this debate, you have to take into consideration operant conditioning as this is the basis for how effective correction works. Operant conditioning should be considered when choosing how to best administer corrective actions whether the parents choose to use corporal punishment, time outs, or loss of privileges.

  • Discuss the differences between negative and positive punishment. What are the factors that make punishment effective?
  • Discuss the effectiveness of corporal punishment and elaborate upon when you think it should be used.
  • Discuss how culture affects the type of punishment used.
  • Give reasons in support of your responses based on your readings and personal experiences.

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

By Saturday, October 19, 2013, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, October 23, 2013, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses. In your responses, consider the following:

  • Have your peers accurately identified the differences between negative and positive punishment? Explain your answer.
  • Can you suggest any other factors that make punishment effective? If so, state them.

Grading Criteria and Rubric

All discussion assignments in this course will be graded using a rubric. Download the discussion rubric and carefully read it to understand the expectations.

Discussion Grading Criteria

This week, we are talking about a topic that can be tricky and also has a tendency to be a polarizing discussion in the class. I want to stress the importance of not getting hung up on the positive/negative terminology. Positive should be viewed as addition (+) and negative as removal or subtraction (-). Get away from thinking good/bad. Reinforcement is ANYTHING that will likely lead to an increase in the behavior, while punishment will lead to a DECREASE in the behavior. Check out the graph below to help explain it further. The terminology can get tricky. The key is to avoid thinking good/bad and instead just be specific about the behavior, and whether the behavior increases or decreases (reinforcement/punishment)

Please take note of the graph below. Please note that discussing positive as good and negative as bad on here will result in a point deduction.

Please be respectful in your posts- child rearing is a very personal issue and we all tend to do things just a little bit differently. When disagreeing with points, please keep in mind these differences and respond in a way that does not place blame on anyone else.

Positive + (something added, given or delivered)

Negative – (something taken away or removed)

Increase in behavior

Positive reinforcement (usually a pleasant stimulus is added that leads to an increase in a given behavior). Ex: Giving a treat from the gum aisle for behaving appropriately in the store.

Negative Reinforcement- Removing an aversive stimulus (nagging, yelling,

Irritating noise, etc.). Ex: Stopping nagging once child cleans his/her room

Decrease in behavior

Positive Punishment- Addition of aversive stimulus that leads to a decrease in the behavior.  Ex: Spanking to decrease the behavior.

Negative Punishment (Extinction): Removal of a usually pleasant stimulus that leads to a decrease in a given behavior. Ex: Taking away use of the car when coming in late.

I look forward to your discussions!

English Research Paper

This assignment has two goals:  1) have students increase their understanding of the concept of Protecting Personal Information (PPI) and other ethical issues related to the use of information technology through research, and 2) learn to correctly use the tools and techniques within Word to format a research paper including using Word 2010/2013’s citation tools.  These skills will be valuable throughout students’ academic career.  The paper will require a title page, NO abstract, three to four full pages of content with incorporation of a minimum of 3 external resources from credible sources, and a Works Cited/Reference page.  Three pages of content means 3 full pages, to the bottom of the third page.  Two pages plus five lines on the third page will not suffice.  Note that submitting a paper that is less than three pages may affect your grade on several rubric items, including page length and several content items.

A list of topics from which students can choose is provided below.  Wikipedia and similar pages are NOT creditable sources.  Blogs and discussion groups are not creditable sources.  The course textbook cannot be used as a source for the research paper.  No more than 10% of the paper may be in the form of a direct citation from an external source.

Topics for Research Paper

  1. Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
  2. Social Engineering
  3. Employee Monitoring
  4. Information Privacy
  5. Electronic Medical Records
  6. Biometrics (in terms of ethical and privacy issues)
  7. Identity Theft
  8. Use of Cookies
  9. Privacy Laws related to Information Technology use
  10. Intellectual Property Rights; Copyright

Writing Quality for the Research Paper

* Grammar, Verb Tenses, Pronoun Use, Spelling, Punctuation, and Writing Competency.

*Remember: spell-check, then proofread. Better yet, have a friend or colleague read it before submitting it. Read it out loud to yourself.

* Remember: there is not their, your is not you’re, its is not it’s, too is not to or two, site is not cite, and who should be used after an individual, not that. For example, “the person WHO made the speech” not “the person THAT made the speech.”

* In a professional paper one does not use contractions (doesn’t, don’t, etc.) and one does not use the personal you or your. Use the impersonal as in the previous sentence. It is more business-like than saying, “Also in a professional paper you don’t use contractions.”

* Use the impersonal as in the sentence immediately above. It is more business-like than saying, “Also in a professional paper you don’t use contractions.”

This is not a speech, it is a research paper.  First and second person should NOT be used.

Social Stratification

Social stratification is the ranking of individuals in a hierarchy of unequal wealth, occupational prestige, and power. It is a feature of society and not a reflection of individual uniqueness or differences. Stratification is a universal feature found in all societies: agrarian, industrial, and postindustrial. Furthermore, socialization and cultures reproduce stratification and transmit it from one generation to the next.

Social institutions such as education, the economy, politics, and government maintain the stratified status quo. The goal of these institutions is to provide the needs of society and not a radical transformation of structured inequality. Changes in social stratification are usually slow and incremental rather than fast and revolutionary.

This discussion will give you an insight into the difficulties all societies face with regards to social stratification. Based on your readings and understanding of the above issues, discuss the answer to the following question:

Is it possible to establish a society in which there is no stratification based on class? Explain your response with reasons.

Minimum of 700 words

Sonny Blues Essay 3 Pages

Assignment 1

1. Read “Sonny’s Blues,” by James Baldwin.

2. Write a “coming to terms” essay of 750-1000 words (3-4 double-spaced pages). This type of

essay requires the writer to “translate the language and ideas of a text into words of [his or her]

own” (Joseph Harris, Rewriting: How to Do Things with Texts, Utah State University Press,

2006).

Use the following information to guide your writing endeavor:

A. Define the “project” of the writer in your own words. A writer’s “project” is more than just the

main idea. What is the writer’s intent? What is he trying to accomplish? What claims does he

make? (This would be the first section and/or page of your essay).

B. Write about the ways in which the writer employs his craft. This is the section in which your

knowledge of literary terms might come in handy (see list of suggested terms at the end of this

document). If section A is the “what,” then this section is the “how.” What is the writer trying to

do (A), and how is he trying to do it (B)? This will likely comprise the middle 1 ½ to 2 pages of

your essay.

C. Assess the uses and limits of the writer’s approach. Now that you have closely examined the

writer’s intentions, messages, and craft, take an evaluative stance on the piece. How effective

has Baldwin been in communicating his ideas and fulfilling his purpose? What does this

text do or “see” well? What does it seem to stumble over or leave unsaid? What are its strengths and weaknesses as a whole? What would you suggest that another reader keep in

mind while reading it? This is the final section of the essay. Include a general conclusion as

well; this will show your teacher that you understand how to write one.

SOC308 WEEK 1 DISC 1

Constructing Race

Review the PBS website
RACE – The Power of an Illusion as you prepare for this discussion. This site offers many examples of how the science of human difference contradicts ordinary ideas of race.

As we see in the readings and in this website, race is socially constructed, a system of thought and human behavior not directly based on nature, instead resulting from social ideas and practices. In other words, race exists because people believe it is real and important.

Please respond to the following:

  1. How has race been constructed in the United States?
  2. Provide a specific example of how race continues to be socially constructed.
  3. What groups are harmed, and benefit, from these constructions of race?

Your initial post for each discussion should be a minimum of 250 words. Use scholarly sources to support your responses. Include citations and references in APA style. Review the posts of your peers, focusing on the social construction process. In particular, focus on example of the ways in which race been defined.

political culture and political language essay ekilby11

Essay #1 – Political Culture and Political Language

4-5 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman 12pt font, 1-inch margins

Some central topics that we have covered so far this semester have been:

  • Introduction to Politics
    • We discussed the meaning of politics, the types of power relationships that exist in society and how the political process ultimately determines the rules of the game in the competition for the limited valued things in society.
      • Resources:
        • Lecture Notes
        • “What is Politics?” chapter by Wasserman
  • American Political Culture
    • We discussed how the values of the political culture are important for the policymaking process because they define the terms of the political debate and establish the range of acceptable policy options available to policymakers.
      • Resources:
        • Lecture Notes
        • “American Political Culture” chapter by Patterson
        • In-class exercise with the President’s Address at Newtown

  • Political Socialization
    • Political socialization is the process whereby individuals acquire political knowledge, attitudes and beliefs. The vast majority of our beliefs are learned from our experiences and the environment around us.
    • The places where we acquire our political beliefs are called “agents of socialization”, some of the most important are family, school, religion, peers and the media.
      • Resources:
        • Lecture Notes
        • See “Political Socialization/Political Opinion” chapter
  • Political Language: Liberal and Conservative
    • We have also discussed George Lakoff’s article on “framing” and his theory that:
      • If you see the nation in the metaphor of a family, there are two ways that you might understand how the family AND the nation should be run/governed:
        • The Strict Father Model
        • The Nurturing Parent Model
      • Resources:
        • Lecture Notes
        • See “Political Language” chapter by Lakoff

Additionally, in preparation for this essay I would like for you to view and read an example of political language in both President Obama’s 2013 State of the Union Address and one of the Republican party’s two responses to the State of the Union that year.  Please watch/hear/read the speeches below:

AND

  • “Establishment” Republican Party’s Response delivered by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) Video Transcript

OR

  • “Tea Party” faction of the Republican Party’s Response delivered by Senator Rand Paul (D-KY) Video and Transcript

Having considered the information presented in the pieces above

In this essay I would like for you to:

  • In President Obama’s address, please find two distinct examples of the President alluding to a tenet/tenets of American Political Culture.
    • What idea or policy is the President seeking to justify by evoking this tenet?
    • How is the tenet specifically linked to the idea/policy being discussed? Be explicit – use the meaning of the tenet as described by Patterson.
    • Is the justification for the idea or policy being presented from within a nurturing parent or strict father frame?  How so? Be explicit – use the components of the model as described by Lakoff.
    • From your point of view, is the President successful in justifying his proposal through the tenet?  Why or why not?
    • Is he staying true to the core meaning of the tenet, or do you believe he is using the tenet in a more coercive way? Why or why not?
  • Similarly, please analyze the Republican response that you chose.  In analyzing Senator Rubio/Senator Paul’s speech, please find two distinct examples of the speaker alluding to a tenet/tenets of American Political Culture.
    • What idea or policy is the speaker seeking to justify by evoking this tenet?
    • How is the tenet specifically linked to the idea/policy being discussed? Be explicit – use the meaning of the tenet as described by Patterson.
    • Is the justification for the idea or policy being presented from within a nurturing parent or strict father frame?  How so? Be explicit – use the components of the model as described by Lakoff.
    • From your point of view, is the speaker successful in justifying their idea through the tenet?  Why or why not?
    • Does the speaker stay true to the core meaning of the tenet, or do you believe he is using the tenet in a more coercive way? Why or why not?
  • Taking into account your analysis of the success of the arguments being made in the speeches please reflect upon whether your own political thought is based more within a nurturing parent or strict father frame.
    • Which frame resonates with you most?
    • How have you been socialized to believe that this frame is the most just? Which agents of socialization introduced you to these beliefs? Be precise, use the agents of socialization and the “cycles of life” described in the Public Opinion article.
    • What did these agents of socialization specifically teach you about these beliefs?
    • What has been your reaction to these teachings?
  •  Include a relevant introduction and conclusion.

Forensic Psychology Booklet

The Forensic Psychology Booklet

Potential students often look for guidance regarding the programs that they are considering. You are a program assistant at a local university. You have been asked by your department chair (psychology) to create a booklet about the field of forensic psychology for potential students. This booklet will be given out at information sessions and will be sent to students requesting more information. The department chair asks you to create this booklet with the undecided student in mind, remembering that while you don’t want to scare students away, you also want to be truthful about the field. She asks for the following information to be included:

  • A description of the educational levels required and recommended (i.e. what can a MA level forensic psychologist do, versus a Doctorate level professional). Different roles that a forensic psychologist can take. This can include roles in the court and out as well as research possibilities. (2 pages)
  • A discussion of each of the following and discuss why is it important that all forensic psychologists need to be well-versed in them (3 pages):
      • Case Law
      • Specific Amendments to the U.S. Constitution and why they are important
      • Important past research in the field
      • Diversity issues
      • Ethical considerations
  • An analysis of at least three aspects of the American judicial system (such as eyewitness testimony, transfer of juveniles to criminal court, etc.), which are impacted most heavily by psychology and psychological research (3 pages). Be sure to discuss:
    • Three aspects of the American judicial system
    • How psychology has impacted these aspects
    • One research study for each aspect that is considered pivotal, classic or ground breaking in the field.

Your booklet needs to be at least 8 pages long. Because it is an informational booklet, it will not be formatted like a formal paper, but should be professionally and attractively presented. Please remember that all citations should follow APA formatting rules, and the majority of the information should be in a formal academic writing style. However, a minority of the information can be written in bulleted format.
