Food Label and Health Presentation

Students are required to analyze food labels, list the nutrient classes and their functions, and summarize the consequences of overnutrition and undernutrition.

Create a 10 to 15 slide Microsoft^® PowerPoint^® presentation that addresses the following points:

1. Discuss what the 5/20 rule is according to the Food Label and You video. Include an example of a food label from your own pantry, clearly stating how the rule applies to specific nutrients on the food label.
2. Outline how the 5/20 rule would be applied to at least two chronic diseases. For the diseases mentioned which nutrients should be reduced or increased?
3. Discuss the proposed Food Label changes outlined in the Textbook explaining how the changes would help consumers understand food labels more effectively.
4. Examine the food labels for three food items in your own pantry or refrigerator. Name the food products and build a list or a chart, indicating the following components:
   1. Total calories per serving
   2. Percentage of calories from fat
   3. Total amount of carbohydrates (in grams)
   4. Total amount of protein (in grams)
   5. Total amount of fiber (in grams)
5. From your knowledge of nutrient intake and their associated chronic disease risk, are there changes you would make for the food labels examined?

Discuss at least the three (3) following issues.

1) Explore at least one of the recent criminal or tortious cases in sports that have been in the media (this can be a short paragraph)

2) Explore Commercial Misappropriation and Right of Publicity. Look in to the Ed Obannon case (which we have already done somewhat) and Dryer V NFL (One link can be found at: http://www.forbes.com/sites/agoodman/2013/10/10/fred-dryer-vs-the-nfl-the-next-chapter/)

3) Discuss your questions/concerns about the topic Assumption of Risk. Look to the Frontline video on concussions (CTE) to further explore this.

Beginning on page 4 of your text (Ferdico 11th) the balance between Due Process and Crime Control is discussed. Herbert Packer discussed these competing concepts (see table 1.2, p. 5). Keep in mind that these two competing governmental interests are at odds each time action is taken by the police, corrections and the courts – our criminal justice system. It is important to understand that criminal procedure is the study and practice of how the law is made and enforced. For example, each time the police conduct a search or make an arrest they are intruding into an individual’s rights. The determination of whether that intrusion is reasonable is weighed against the need to protect society. It is our individual rights as defined in the Bill of Rights, (generally amendments 1-10 & 14), which provide the template for the interpretation of actions by the government that affect those individual rights. This interpretation is carried out by the judicial branch of government through a concept known as judicial review. Judicial review is the process by which the courts determine if actions by the government are in adherence to constitutional law – the supreme law of the land. The case of Marbury v. Madison (1803) made clear that it was the responsibility of the judicial branch of government to determine what the law is and to interpret that law. Marbury v. Madison is discussed on p. 9 (Ferdico 11th).

1. Women never stepped foot or acted on the stage until the 17th Century, during England’s Restoration Period (though women had begun acting on French and Spanish stages earlier than that). A large part of that is due to the public impression acting had. Regardless of the gender, acting was often seen as an immoral profession for people.
