There have been many stories throughout history of leaders who have been corrupted by their power. The very definition of leadership as “a process by which an individual influences the group to achieve a common goal” (Northouse, 2016, p. 6) implies the power to exert influence. Leaders must exert power in order to lead, but they must also strive to understand the complexities of power. Research by French and Raven (1959) and by others (Burns, 1976; Neck & Manz, 1994) provides insight on the types, or bases, of power available to a leader, the process of choosing among those bases, and the motivations for leaders’ choices (Northouse, 2016, p. 379). Recent researchers (Barbuto & Warneke, 2014; Vevere, 2014) also explore the effectiveness of using individual bases of power in particular situations and the effects certain bases of powers have on leaders and those they lead. Armed with this information, leaders can avoid utilizing certain bases of power when the choice may lead to negative consequences. They can instead choose to wield power in ways that will foster organizational success. Understanding the bases also gives both leaders and followers insight into situations they observe and difficult interpersonal interactions they negotiate.

Being a global change agent does not necessarily mean you are in an executive leadership position, but it does mean you have a particular mind-set. That mind-set is one that you use to remain flexible to change, to develop creative solutions to complex business problems, to manage stress effectively, and to mobilize a culturally diverse team and inspire the team to help achieve organizational objectives. Global change agents must be competent in cross-cultural business practices. Imagine you are a global change agent similar to Janelle in the following scenario. Read the scenario, follow the instructions, and reflect on the results of your assessment.

Janelle is interviewing for a low-level management job, which will require her to supervise a small team of employees. One of the forms Janelle must complete as part of the interview process is a leadership style questionnaire. Janelle wonders what insight her potential employers hope to gain from the results, what insight the results will provide her personally, and how this information will impact her career.

Experiences like Janelle’s are not uncommon. Organizations use leadership style assessments and other such instruments for a variety of reasons. Bookstore shelves and the Internet offer a vast number of resources to help business professionals uncover their leadership styles and develop perspectives for positive and effective change. Given the widespread availability and use of such instruments, global change agents should evaluate the potential impact and usefulness of the assessments and their underlying leadership theories.

Leadership theories have evolved in many ways over time, from the great man theory (1840), trait theory (1930), behavioral theory (1940), contingency theories (1960), to transactional (1970) and transformation theories (1970). An Ideal Solution?

For many, the concept of transformational leadership is difficult to understand. Numerous researchers have defined it as a leadership theory and leadership style. One definition of transformational leadership is “the process whereby a person engages with others and creates a connection that raises the level of motivation and morality in both the leader and the follower. This type of leader is attentive to the needs and motives of followers and tries to help followers reach their fullest potential” (Northouse, 2016, p. 162).

Sir Richard Branson is a commonly cited example of a transformational business leader. Branson’s entrepreneurial efforts began in the music industry and then expanded to numerous industries, including the Voyager Group travel company, Virgin Atlantic Airline, and Virgin Galactic, a space-tourism company. He changed perceptions of entrepreneurial possibilities and empowered other business leaders.

There are three stages in the digital media construction process: pre-production, production, and post-production. For this Discussion, you will focus on the pre-production (design) of the text- and image-based learning object. You will produce the design in the form of a script and storyboard.

In the design process, pre-production is where most of the problems are worked out and most revisions take place. This is why most designers choose to start with pencil and paper for the ease of making changes. In this process, you share the design with key members of the production team to make suggestions for revision. Ultimately, your finished design will be the blueprint for your LO. This does not mean that you need to draw everything perfectly, but the script and storyboard should be detailed enough so that a team of individuals could take your design and create exactly what you have intended.
