Asian American Research

For this week and the last we have been looking at an overview of Asian American Theatre, some of its origins and traditions, as well as a brief look at where this culturally specific kind of theatre stands today nationally and more locally. We also looked at individuals like David Henry Hwang, who have helped bring Asian American Theatre to more prominence in the United States.

Consider your overall outlook, knowledge and familiarity with Asian history in the U.S. and the potential struggles that Asian Americans have endured in the last century(s) as there was mass migrations in the middle of the 1800’s. Looking at the Asian American experience in America is important as we consider the building blocks of our nation, with railroads, industry, internment camps during WWII, the deep culture of education and tradition that is so socially important to the overall history of this group of study and the important contributions that we as a society have enjoyed from key figures in Asian American history.

We can all speak with a certain level of experience and knowledge, either directly or indirectly, to what we think would be important elements and issues to discuss within the Asian American culture.

There have been many incredibly talented artists that have made their impact on the genre either as a playwright or performer like B.D. Wong (Law and Order), who is also a director, directing for television and for the stage or, in the areas of design, like Ming Cho Li who is one of the most renowned scenic designers in the entire field of scenic design in the last 50 years. Yet, their work and the work of so many current Asian American artists may have never seen their art produced or appreciated if not for the well spring of Asian American Theatre companies that have come up and thrived all over the U.S.

Below is a list of the current working Theatres that focus their energy and skill in the producing of Theatre that is in some way with an Asian/Asian American priority.

Your assignment is to choose ONE Theatre from this list below and go to its website and explore it.

The movie I picked is SNOW WHITE AND SEVEN DWARFS, explain how three cinematic techniques and/or design elements have helped establish a major theme in that film.

In 800 to 1200 words

• Describe a major theme of the movie you have selected using evidence from the movie itself as well as course resources and other scholarly sources to support your position.
• Identify at least three techniques (cinematography, lighting, acting style, or direction) and/or design elements (set design, costuming, or hair and makeup), and explain how these techniques and/or design elements contribute to the establishment of the theme. Reference particular scenes or sequences in your explanations.
• State your opinion regarding the mise en scène, including
• How the elements work together.
• How congruent the design elements are with the theme of the movie.
• Whether or not other techniques would be as effective (Explain your reasoning).

Note: Remember that a theme is an overarching idea that recurs throughout the plot of a film. It is the distilled essence of what the film is about, the main design which the specific scenes and actions lead a viewer to understand.

Your paper should be organized around a thesis statement that focuses on how the elements of your chosen feature-length film both establish and maintain one of its major themes. Review the Week Three sample paper, which provides an example of a well-developed analysis as well as insight on composition.

The paper must be 800 to 1200 words in length and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

You must use at least two scholarly sources other than the textbook to support your claims. Refer to the ENG225 Research Guide

in the Ashford University Library for guidance and to locate your

sources. Cite your sources (including the feature-length film) within

the text of your paper and on the reference page. For information

Most people perceive international public administration to be a set
of state structures, institutions, and processes. Opponents of
globalization argue that it weakens states, making it difficult for them
to sustain social welfare and environmental policies, and create fiscal
redistributive initiatives.

According to James Bovard, a libertarian author who focuses on
writing about government, proponents and businesses seeking to expand a
broad claim there is little or no evidence of national governments’
decline. Congress, along with many policy strategists, seem to think
that whatever the effects of globalization on governments, they are
likely to be beneficial for long-term economic growth (Bovard, 1987).

Analyze the claims laid out in this controversy, and try to argue the
strongest case you can in favor of the view(s) you find most
convincing. In doing so, be sure to seriously consider the case that
your opponents might make against your position, and why you would
reject it. Use the Internet and / or Strayer databases to research
evidence that supports your opinion. Determine your point of view on the
issue, and support your position with information from at least three
(3) reliable, relevant, peer-reviewed references (no more than one [1]
used previously), published within the last five (5) years.

Create a PowerPoint presentation that covers the following:

• Provide a brief description of the issue.
• Present evidence that supports both sides of the argument.
• In the note section of each information slide, you must write a narrative of what you would
• Provide at least three (3) reliable, relevant, peer-reviewed
  references (no more than one [1] used previously), published within the
  last five (5) years at the end of your video.

for an organization to have a positive corporate culture. In addition, discuss
ways that an organization can improve a negative culture. Please include a
properly formatted references page citing your sources.

Option 2: News Flash

Choose
a learning objective from Week 7 and research an article on the Internet that
relates to it.  Write a summary of the article discussing it as well as
what it means to you.  Your summary should be a minimum of 1 – 2 pages in
length and must be in your own words. Please include a properly formatted references
page citing your sources.

Option 3: Traditional Paper

Research,
analyze and defend why it is essential for an organization to have a positive
corporate culture. In addition, discuss ways that an organization can improve a
negative culture.  Your paper should be a minimum of 2 pages in length and
should include a properly formatted references page citing your sources.

Discussion 4.1

A firm has a $100 million capital budget. It is considering two projects, each costing $100 million. Project A has an IRR of 20% and an NPV of $9million; it will be terminated after 1 year at a profit of $20 million, resulting in an immediate increase in EPS. Project B, which cannot be postponed, has an IRR of 30% and an NPV of $50 million. However, the firm’s short-run EPS will be reduced if it accepts Project B because no revenues will be generated for several years.

a. Should the short-run effects on EPS influence the choice between the two projects?

b. How might situations like this influence a firm’s decision to use payback?

Discussion 4.2

If you were the CFO of a company that had to decide on hundreds of potential projects every year, would you want to use sensitivity analysis and scenario analysis as described in the chapter, or would the amount of arithmetic required take too much time and thus not be cost-effective? What involvement would nonfinancial people such as those in marketing, accounting, and production have in the analysis?
