While verbal communication is just one way of articulating messages to others, it’s not the only skill that human service professionals need to utilize when working with clients. Nonverbal communication carries significant weight when it comes to conveying messages of all sorts. In this discussion forum, you will have an opportunity to provide examples of effective nonverbal communication techniques appropriate to a human services setting.

Reflect on your own experience regarding nonverbal messages. Have there been situations in your life when the nonverbal messages were much clearer than the verbal messages? What about times when the words that were spoken did not match the nonverbal cues? How is online communication different in terms of nonverbal messages? What kinds of messages do you send nonverbally via your style of dressing or mannerisms? How would nonverbal messages affect your communication with clients or colleagues?

Spend approximately ten minutes observing two or more individuals in conversation at a coffee shop, store, or work environment. It is best if you observe individuals that you do not know. Please be respectful and unobtrusive in your observation. As an alternative, you can observe the interactions between characters on a television show. Following your observation and using your textbook as a guide, please respond to the questions below for your discussion post. If you are basing your post on television characters, please identify the show.

In this chapter we learned that the language of laws that cover workplace privacy and the monitoring of employee communications becomes obsolete quickly as technology changes.

The discussion assignment for this unit entails sharing with your classmates your knowledge and opinion of workplace privacy laws and policies.

Discussion

In this online forum, limit your discussion to policies related to workplace communications—by e-mail, the Internet, and the telephone. Although you may choose your own source, suggested sites for information are Nolo: Law for All and the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.

1. Use the policies of your own workplace as a starting point for discussion. Include why the policy was put in place—if you know why—and discuss whether employees generally agree or disagree with the policy. Remember you do not have to answer question 1, since I have an idea of what to put here

Alcohol addiction is a common malady across many countries and cultures in the world. Some cultures encourage the use of alcohol as a part of social ritual while others ban its use entirely. In this assignment, you will conduct research on one of the following cultural groups to understand their use of alcohol. Select one group from the following choices: Native Americans, Eastern European, Western European, Saudi Arabian, or South Koreans.

In the first part of the paper, explain how alcohol affects the body/brain. Summarize the dangers of alcohol abuse on individuals and society. Then, in the second part of the paper, describe alcohol use in a specific group/culture. Use the Kaplan University library to find at least three studies of alcohol use by the chosen group. Explain how that society/group views alcohol use, alcoholism, and treatment for alcoholism.

In the second part of the paper, provide examples of how members of the selected culture transmit their attitudes about alcohol to other members of their culture.
