Essay 6: Argument

Research Project Assignment

ENG1101

Statement of the assignment

Researching an Issue to Create a Call to Action

This research assignment involves idea generation (freewriting), focused research, synthesis of collected data and generated text, and presentation of findings in the form of a short-length research paper.

Elements of this assignment

  • Statement of the issue at hand (1 page) which expresses your understanding of the context in which this issue is situated
  • Dialogue (two 1-page position statements, each of which reflects your findings on two conflicting sides of your researched topic)
  • Persuasive essay, or peroration, drawn from research (1-2 pages; this will most likely become the draft of your “call to action” which proposes a solution)
  • Works Cited page, along with a photocopy or printout of the first body page of each source used
  • Final Draft of paper which incorporates your argument and the major positions at stake within this topic (1000 word essay, 4-6 pages, typed, double spaced, 12 point standard font)
  • Metaletter

Research Topics

Your assignment for this research essay is to analyze a current social, environmental, or political issue and provide a recommendation for action. These topics are quite broad; for this essay project you will choose a topic and narrow it sufficiently to create a compelling, researchable, and arguable thesis.

For each of these topics, literally millions of pages have already been written. What I want from you is an exploration of the topic that gets several layers beneath the surface. What is the biggest debate in your topic area? Explore it in your dialogue. Then decide for yourself what matters, what people need to know, and what needs to happen. You might argue for systematic healthcare for children in America; you might argue for (or against) tying high-stakes testing to school funding; you might argue that leveling the standards in schools hurts more students than it helps, or that shifts need to happen beyond what NCLB proposes. Whatever it is, drill down, get the meaty information, and see what seems to matter.

Your sources for this paper must be very fresh. You can use only two sources (at most) that are more than 24 months old. For the rest of your research, you can quote ONLY from sources no more than 24 months old. If you cannot verify the age of your source (it’s an undated blog rather than a dated article, for instance), you cannot use it unless it is an “extra” source (not one of the 2). You’ll need at least 2 sources for this essay.

Please note: Several topics are off limits for this project:

  • Gun control
  • Abortion
  • the Death Penalty
  • anything to do with Welfare.

That leaves open many, many other topics, and I look forward to seeing what you might choose to pursue!

two essays provide a well argued response using evidence to back your position.4 pages and 3 pages

How did the colonists embrace this concept, and was it accessible to all? Finally, is the liberalism of the 18th century still valid today or would you suggest a new concept or political philosophy to govern society? Double spaced 12 Times Roman font, 4 pages in length.

Question number 2) Why did Massachusetts engage in a debate to voice their opposition to the British crown, were their arguments valid, and how did it influence colonial elites who assumed leadership? what event triggered the Revolutionary War and how did the leadership of colonial North America react? For this portion of the interactive assignment you will refer to the table you created in Week 4. Create a new document which, through a table, depicts the tactics, techniques, and capabilities of your chosen terrorist organization you researched in Week 4. You will also include the vulnerabilities that need to be addressed by your chosen department and either propose department strategy changes or justify current strategies.

You must use the provided template for your document. A sample document has been provided for your convenience. In addition, you may wish to access the provided Quick Start Guide on how to add colors to a table cell.

The document must contain:

  • Incorporation of the following from the Week 4 Interactive Assignment document:

As such, you have learned of a credible threat from your chosen terrorist organization. Select one of the following targets: a train, a school, a high rise office building, a state Capitol building, or a cruise ship. Clearly identify your chosen international terrorist organization and describe the threat to the United States or the U.S. interests abroad. Review the government response options from the table you created, determine a course of action, and identify potential ramifications of action or inaction to this new threat. You must also use at least one or a combination of the policy options found in Chapter 13 of the Martin (2016) text when considering effective policies to counter the tactics and capabilities of your selected international terrorist organization. The policy options are:

  • Antiterrorism policies to counter terrorist activity
  • Use of Force Counterterrorism Options
  • Repressive options other than war
  • Conciliatory options other than war
  • Legalistic options

Your initial post must be a minimum of 400 words. Support your post with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly or official government sources. Cite your sources in text as well as at the end of your post. Sources must utilize APA formatting as outlined by the Ashford University Writing Center.
