Healthcare Delivery Discussions

DISCUSSION 1:

Cost and Healthcare

In a recent election, on a national debate stage, a political candidate declared that “no American has ever died for lack of health care”. It is true that hospitals are required by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), a federal law to stabilize and treat all patients, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. It is an unfunded mandate with hospital emergency rooms bearing the entire burden of the cost. Outside the boundaries of this act, un/underinsured patients surely do die for a lack of health care.

Have you or anyone you know been in this situation? How would someone feel if they were in a position where they could not afford treatment? In the movie, “John Q”, John Quincy Archibald’s son Michael collapses while playing baseball as a result of heart failure. John rushes Michael to a hospital emergency room where he is informed that Michael’s only hope is a transplant. Unfortunately, John’s insurance won’t cover his son’s transplant. Out of options, John Q. takes extreme measures to save his son. While a compelling film, it is certainly from one point of view and sensationalized. Health care professionals must always be tasked with seeing all points of view with objectivity.

Question the impact of being uninsured.

Include the following aspects in the discussion:

  • Think of a time when you or someone you know did not seek medical care due to cost
  • What was the result?
  • Discuss if you would support paying more in taxes to have a national insurance program that covered every citizen

DISCUSSION 2:

Is the U.S. Population Unhealthy?

Health-related behavior represents a prime target for improving the nation’s health. Today’s leading cases of disease and death are preventable chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and asthma), and behavioral risk factors play a critical role in their development and management. Obesity is common, serious and costly problem in the U.S. Obesity affected about 93.3 million of US adults in 2015~2016. Fast food consumption has been linked to higher caloric intake and greater risk for obesity. As an increasing number of consumers are dining at fast food restaurants, policy makers are turning their attention to environmental and policy approaches that influence consumer choice, including mandated calorie menu labels in fast food restaurants. The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act included a provision requiring restaurants with more than 20 locations nationwide to post calorie information at the point of purchase.

Watch the following video: Supersize me

Explore the effectiveness of healthy living education.

Include each of the following aspects in the discussion:

  • Do you think the posting of calorie counts will change behavior when ordering food?
  • Has it changed your behavior?
  • Suggest education that might influence diet and food choices
  • Discuss if insurance premiums and health care charges should reflect a person’s unhealthy life style

Individual Project for an online class

You are in the role of project manager for a coffee franchise global expansion project. You plan to expand into three different countries. The magnitude of the project requires you to prepare for the project kickoff meeting and business negotiations with the project team who are potential partners from Mexico, China, and Saudi Arabia. You understand that these cultures are vastly different. They have different business customs, social protocols, and languages, so conducting business with each country requires a customized approach.

To prepare for your first outreach effort with each country, analyze the cultural similarities and differences that exist between the countries and the United States using Geert Hofstede’s Six Cultural Dimensions as discussed in class. Note that the three countries are characterized by collectivism while the United States has an individualist culture.

Create a bar graph and/or table that summarizes the key cultural dimension comparison. Then, compare and contrast each country according to your findings. Discuss the implications of the relative cultural dimensions. How might they impact managing the global expansion project? Remember that you are adapting your approach from a United States centric view. (400-600 words).

This assignment lays the foundation for IP4, where you will apply your findings to forming an effective global team.

Step One:

Visit Geert Hofstede Cultural Dimensions

Step Two:

Create a country comparison using the United States in first dropdown menu box to see the values for the six cultural dimensions. After selecting the United States, a second and a third country can be chosen in the second dropdown menu box. Keep the United States in the first box and then repeat for each country (Mexico, China, and Saudi Arabia) involved in the fast food expansion project to see a comparison of their scores.

Step Three:

Create a bar graph and/or table to highlight how the four countries compare to the United States by using the value scores under the comparison to create the bar chart. How to make a bar chart on Microsoft Word:

  1. Click “Insert” tab
  2. Click “Chart” in the Illustrations Group
  3. Select “Bar”
  4. Click “OK” to insert a chart and a spreadsheet will open alongside your Word document. The spreadsheet contains sample figures surrounded by a blue border. Column “A” contains data labels. The remaining columns contain data.
  5. Click a corner of the border. Drag it down or up to add or remove items from the graph.

Step Four:

Using your findings:

  • Explain Hofstede’s cultural dimensions.
  • Using the United States as a basis for comparison, evaluate each country’s similarities and differences relative to the franchise business deployment.
  • Discuss the implications for your initial communications within each country. For example, what is the impact of collectivism relative to individualism regarding management communication? Use Intellipath, MUSE, Beyond the Book. Live Chats and the CTU Library to help identify cultural characteristics that will be important during your first project meeting with each country.

Discussion Week 5

To become a stronger critical thinker, there are traits I would like to strengthen. Those traits would be Intellectual Courage, Intellectual Empathy, and lastly Intellectual Humility. I think everyone can strengthen these traits. Not only to become a better critical thinker but to become a better human being as well.

Intellectual Courage: Is defined by basically having consciousness of the need to face and fairly address ideas, beliefs, or viewpoints that may be negative and have negative emotions. To strengthen this trait, I can focus on becoming wiser and being rational in situations that I might not agree with. I need to work on educating myself before I try to argue a point. I think that is the most difficult situations for me, when I have a different opinion than someone, it is easy to get defensive and see things one way, instead of reasoning. When you have more knowledge because you educate yourself on the situation, it makes it easy to reason and be fair in an argument. You cannot be afraid of standing up for something you believe in even if others do not agree. Showing courage even when you are afraid will uncover truth and give you the answers you are looking for. As Tadeusz Kotarbinski has said, “Intellectual man is a parasite that produces culture”. To produce a new culture, one has to have courage to believe in themselves and their ideas enough to teach others to learn about them.

Intellectual Empathy: Is defined by having awareness to put yourself in someone else’s shoes to understand them before making a judgement or assumption. This is truly a trait I need to work on. Too many times I act out of emotion and do not stop and think how I would feel if it was the other way around. In doing so, I think so many arguments would go a different route. When you stop and think about things before harsh words are said, you can come up with a reasonable response rather than argue who is right and so on. Having empathy, slows you down a bit and brings out truth to the situation instead of a big argument full of emotion and gets nowhere. This is probably the strongest trait I need work on but I am not afraid to admit it, and with knowledge I have gained from this class about thinking more logically and reasoning, I have no doubt I will strengthen this trait.

Intellectual Humility: Lastly, this trait is defined as having sensitivity to someone else’s circumstances and being consciousness of ones limits of knowledge. I feel empathy and humility are very similar. But the difference between the two to me, is being humble simply means you are pretty sure of your position in a situation but instead of acting like you know it all, you are very humble about it and don’t want to poach or brag. Instead you share your views with others but stand strong with your position but also listen to the views and opinions of others, even when you do not agree. I am very good at this. I had a guy once tell me, “You are so pretty, I thought you would be stuck up, but you’re not. That makes you more beautiful”. A little cognitive bias don’t you think? But it was definitely a compliment to know that I didn’t come of that way to others. I hold Humility very high on my list of things that I want to be growing in. We all need to realize that we can never know everything, but instead be aware of our limitations. I never want to become a Dogmatists and lose sense of the world around me. I work hard every day to stop and appreciate the small things in life, because in reality those are the big things.

Digestion and absorption

Digestion and Absorption

So far, we have spent quite a bit of time discussing what to eat, and how much we should consume from each food group. However, it is equally important to understand how our body physiologically reacts to our food and portion choices. After viewing the Digestive System video, use the outline below to discuss the purpose and function of the human digestive system:

  • The Digestive Tract
    • Appraise the purpose and components of the digestive system during digestion and the absorption of nutrients.
  • The Mechanical Aspect of Digestion
    • Discuss the key mechanical processes involved with the digestion of a food item of your choice.
  • The Chemical Aspect of Digestion
    • Distinguish the mechanical and chemical digestive processes and discuss the role of enzymes and other gastric fluids in digesting sugar, starch, fiber, fat, and protein.
  • A Letter From Your Digestive Tract
    • Review the letter on page 92 of your textbook. Assess the correlation between food choices and digestive disorders and explain how to avoid such disorders.

This assignment must be a minimum of three pages in length (excluding title and references pages) in APA format as outlined. Use subheadings to help organize your paper. Include a minimum of two scholarly sources, in addition to the course text, cited according to APA format.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Sociology Discussion Questions

Positive self-presentation is an important driver of many of colorblind racism’s storylines and testimonies. Consider the two quotes presented below coming from the textbook Getting Real About Race by Stephanie McClure and Cherise Harris (2015), and propose an alternative way that the speaker could relate the same information or experience without reproducing colorblind racism? What would that look like? At least 200 words each. The quotes is provided below:

1. “I don’t agree with hiring someone who may or may not be less qualified than someone else just because their race needs to be represented better”(see Bonilla-Silva,2009; Moore, 2008).

2. Katznelson (2005) notes, “there was no greater instrument for widening an already huge racial gap than the G. I. Bill”

Grading

Purpose of Assignment

This week’s focus is on the preparation of financial reports for internal users, such as managers. This case study applies the concepts of managerial accounting, through comparative and ratio analysis, and requires students to identify financial data needed by managers for decision making.

About Your Signature Assignment

This signature assignment is designed to align with specific program student learning outcome(s) in your program. Program Student Learning Outcomes are broad statements that describe what students should know and be able to do upon completion of their degree. The signature assignments may be graded with an automated rubric that allows the University to collect data that can be aggregated across a location or college/school and used for program improvements.

Assignment Steps

Resources: Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), U.S. Securities and Exchange Committee (SEC)

Tutorial help on Excel® and Word functions can be found on the Microsoft® Office website. There are also additional tutorials via the web offering support for Office products.

Scenario: You are a loan officer for White Sands Bank of Taos. Paul Jason, president of P. Jason Corporation, has just left your office. He is interested in an 8-year loan to expand the company’s operations. The borrowed funds would be used to purchase new equipment. As evidence of the company’s debt-worthiness, Jason provided you with the following facts:

2017

2016

Current Ratio

3.1

2.1

Asset Turnover

2.8

2.2

Net Income

Up 32%

Down 8%

Earnings per Share

$3.30

$2.50

Jason is a very insistent (some would say pushy) man. When you told him you would need additional information before making your decision, he acted offended and said, “What more could you possibly want to know?” You responded you would , at minimum, need complete, audited financial statements.

Develop a minimum 700-word examination of the financial statements and include the following:

Explain why you would want the financial statements to be audited.

Discuss the implications of the ratios provided for the lending decision you are to make. That is, does the information paint a favorable picture? Are these ratios relevant to the decision? State why or why not.

Evaluate trends in the performance of P. Jason Corporation. Identify each performance measure as favorable or unfavorable and explain the significance of each.

List three other ratios you would want to calculate for P. Jason Corporation, and in your own words explain in detail why you would use each.

As the loan officer, what else would you do to gain a better understanding of Paul Jason’s, and the Corporation’s financial picture and why?

Based on your analysis of P. Jason Corporation, will you recommend approval for the requested loan? Provide specific details to support your decision.

Format the assignment consistent with APA guidelines.

World Lit week 7: getting Romantic

This week you’ll be sampling a variety of writers working in verse, spanning the 19th century. Among them are great representatives of the Romantic tradition, as well as pre-Modern writers who were beginning to react to that tradition in very interesting ways, sometimes rejecting some or all of its key tenets. You’ll also dip into a few writers working completely outside that tradition — such as the Indian poet, Ghalib.

In order to tackle this week’s discussion, you’ll need to have finished viewing the Week 7 Viewing, and compiled your list of Romantic traits from the BBC documentary as well as the intro in your text.

Here’s what to do:

  1. List the characteristic of Romanticism you’ve identified from the text and the BBC documentary we watched.
  2. Choose three of the poets we’ve read and explain how those traits apply (or don’t apply) to his/her work. You might find some poems have elements of Romanticism, but break away from the movement in other ways.
  3. Be sure to provide specific quotations from the poems you’ve selected to support your analysis.

As always, your initial post, and your responses, need to be substantive.
