Discussion on Caribbean history, its’ people, and Creolization

This discussion is based on your readings on “Plantation Peoples 1630-1770” and “Slave Society or Creole Society?”, in Concise History of the Caribbean and Creolization as Cultural Creativity. Your answer should be between 2 to 4 paragraphs. You must use examples from Higman’s Concise History of the Caribbean text. Remember to appropriately cite your sources. In addition to your post, please respond to at least one classmate’s post.

Given the situation where populations of enslaved Africans and immigrant and migrant workers worked on the plantations, how do you think the mixed Caribbean plantation societies influenced the culture of the various islands?

Baron and Cara described ‘Creolization’ as ‘cultural creativity in process’. How does this theory lend itself to supporting and explaining the creative process that is performed by the Caribbean peoples?

Sociolinguistic Factors

Because communication involves being part of a language community, it is important to understand the cultural contributions of the people with whom communication takes place. Chapter 2 of Introduction to Communication Disorders includes such information that may be useful in determining the manner in which people communicate. Consider how communication is influenced by age, gender, and ethnicity. How might sociolinguistic factors in communication be related to unique variables of cultural identity, setting, and participants? How might disorders that manifest themselves throughout a person’s life be influenced by these factors? How might a person be affected by these factors?

Given the current backlog of civil cases in our federal,

Given the current backlog of civil cases in our federal, state, and
county court system, and the ever increasing cost of litigation, many
people facing disputes among themselves or with various organizations
are electing to go to alternative dispute resolution (ADR). The most
common means of ADR are arbitration, mediation, and mini-trials (Judge
Judy), but a number of other types ADR are available. Pursuing a major
civil case in county court will probably take three Years to complete
and cost $_00,000. On the other hand, arbitration will probably take 60
days, and cost $30,000 – $50,000. So, you are facing a dispute with
your former employer of 25 years, who is trying to deny you certain
benefits that you gained legal title to (you think) over these years of
employment.

  • What choices do you have in pursuing your claim for past employment benefits?
  • What are the various factors you need to consider in choosing a route to recovery?
  • You are very confident you will prevail at the end of the
process, and recover your benefits. So, what action do you pursue?

1- Self-Portrait Presentation

Each student will create a 5-10 minute presentation that conveys the essence of their “self” through art. At least 5 works should be chosen. You will need to

  • present the art (via narrated PowerPoint, narrated Prezi, or video), MAKE SURE IT IS FULLY NARRATED AND ON AUTO PLAY so the viewer doesn’t have to click on every slide. One of the easiest ways to do this is to create your PowerPoint with the embedded narration and all transitions and then export it as a video.
  • tell us about the art (artist, when it was created, define the type of art, gives us some context about how it was created)
  • explain how/why it represents you
  • identify a social angle for each work AND do a thorough contextual analysis
    • race and ethnicity
    • gender and sexuality
    • class and highbrow/lowbrow
    • colonialism, postcolonialism, place and regionalism
    • nature (environment, ecology) and culture
    • memory, history, generational identity
    • food culture
    • body and mind

You can use ANY type of art covered in our class, including the performing arts (play, dance, music) that are in Module 3. The WHY it represents you is the most important part of the project. Each student is also required to find something in common with another student based upon self-portraits and to identify that “something in common” in a discussion comment of at least 50 words. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

2- Final Creative Art Project: PROPOSAL

The goal of the creative art project is to provide you with an opportunity to create an original work of art and show how much you learned in this class. You can choose any visual form or medium and show your creativity and imagination. You are required to submit a creative art project in order to pass the class in order to meet the University’s Foundations of Knowledge and Learning Core Curriculum Fine Arts requirement.

Step 1 – Choose an Artist

First, you need to choose an artist (painter, sculptor, photographer, etc.) whose work is interesting and inspiring to you. Do not copy his/her work but use it as a starting point for your project. For example, if you choose Boticelli’s The Birth of Venus, you may use the same mythological theme in a different medium such as sculpture, mosaic, or song.

Step 2 – Research

  1. Research the time period of your artist.
  2. Research the artist’s biography.
  3. Research the artist’s techniques, ideas, and inspirations.

The more information you know about the artist, the better you will understand the work that inspired you to create your project. Select 1 work by this artist that you particularly admire. You will be required to submit an image of this artwork at the end of the semester along with the project itself.

Step 3 – Proposal

  1. Decide on a medium (pain, clay, etc.).
  2. Type your project proposal (about 400 words) including the following information:
  • Artist.
  • Artwork you have chosen.
  • The medium.
  • How you will show “the spirit” of the artist and the chosen artwork.
  • What social angle applies to the work

EXAMPLE: Here is a pdf file containing a proposal from a previous semester that earned an “A” to help give you an idea of what is expected. downloadto view the example.

Proposal: REQUIRED, you must get approval for your project or your project won’t be accepted.

  • Well-developed paragraph (at least 400 words) free of grammatical and spelling errors.
  • Addresses chosen artist/artwork/movement used as basis of project, the medium, and intentions to capture “the spirit of” that artist and specific artwork.
  • Contains steps to how you will create your artwork and a timeline for how long you estimate it will take
  • Contains an image of the inspiration artist/artwork/movement
  • Identifies social angle of artist/artwork/movement

Food Service Operations

Instructions

You work as a planner in strategic acquisitions for Marriott Corporation. You and your colleagues work on developing growth plans that senior executives use for consideration in small and large chain acquisition strategy. Marriott has grown in recent years by acquiring chains that allow it to gain market share in areas it might have been perceived as under-represented in. In evaluating growth opportunities your team drafts a memo for your supervisors that describes the brands Marriott currently operates that offer on-site dining options. Your portion of the memo outlines all of the properties in terms of the dining options associated with each brand so your supervisors can understand which growth opportunities may exist on the food side of brand growth.

  • Research Marriott Corporation’s eight luxury brands and the main on-property, non-room service dining options each offers and draft your portion of the memo which outlines them.
  • For the outline of properties and dining options, provide descriptions of the concepts and service styles common amongst each of the eight luxury brands
  • 2000-2500 words; professional memorandum format
  • File upload, 12 pt. font, 1-inch margins
  • Limited spelling and grammatical errors
