Diagnostic essay

Your goal is to either analyze the article’s argument or make a persuasive argument about the subject matter addressed in one of the four articles listed below. If you choose the former, you are not going to make an argument about the article’s topic, but rather make an argument as to how well the author makes her/his argument. If you choose the latter, you will take a stand on the issue and write in a persuasive manner as to why someone should agree with your side of the issue.

Feel free to quote from the article in your essay. However, do not simply repeat what the article says. Offer analysis and show of your critical thinking skills. Avoid using the first-person voice.

Spark Discussion: What Does It Mean to Be a Counselor?

Spark Discussion: What Does It Mean to Be a Counselor?

When you first considered counseling as a career path, what did you imagine it would be like? You may not have asked yourself that question yet. Now is the time to consider what your future career might be like on a day-to-day basis.

Imagine these details: the clients you see yourself helping, the location of your workspace, the coworkers you interact with, and how you might become an advocate and agent of social change. With this clear picture in mind, you can better prepare yourself for developing the skills and professional identity of a mental health counselor.

For this Spark Discussion, contemplate the details described in the paragraph above (and feel free to go beyond them—the sky’s the limit), and prepare to share your vision for your future as a mental health counselor.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Course Introduction and Syllabus.
  • As you prepare for this Spark Discussion, keep in mind that your focus should be professional and not personal in nature.
  • Consider your motivations for becoming a counselor.
  • Imagine that you have completed your Master’s program and you have become a fully licensed mental health counselor.

By Day 3

Post the following:

  • Describe your motivation for becoming a counselor.
  • Describe your vision for your future role as a counselor. Include as many details as possible, including
    • the clients you will counsel;
    • how you are helping them change;
    • the setting where you will counsel; and
    • how you will serve as an agent for social change.
  • Feel free to go beyond these questions if additional details emerge for you.

Read your colleagues’ postings and respond if you wish.

Note: Spark Discussions are intended to generate ideas and spark thoughts before you review the week’s Learning Resources or begin your Assignments. Therefore, no APA citations of Learning Resources are required for your Spark posts. For this reason, your responses may be briefer than a regular Discussion post. A response post to your colleagues is not required, although you are welcome to respond if you choose.

Consider the following scenario:

Your senior management was very impressed with your assessment of the financial statements and ratios analysis you provided on your competitor. They have asked you to assemble using the information and assessment techniques you demonstrated in Week 7, a presentation for some senior staff and board of directors. You will need to display your corporate position as well as the industry metrics, and then show what your corporation is currently doing to improve your position in the industry and support your projected growth. One key point that your management has asked for is for you to explain your process steps for the analysis of the financial statement and ratios. If you do not have a corporation, choose a corporation and its competitor for your presentation.

In this course, we have discussed many important topics related to Financial Statement Analysis. Taking on the role of a financial statement analyst provide a presentation to senior management and board directors in financial statement and ratio analysis by developing a PowerPoint presentation, based upon the content assignment outcomes from last week, and other outcomes defined within this course.

Support your conclusions with references from a minimum of five (5) journal articles or publications.

Incorporate appropriate animations, transitions, and graphics as well as “speaker notes” for each slide. The speaker notes may be comprised of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists.

Create a PowerPoint slide set. Think about who your target audience is and how your topic affects them.

The required length of the PowerPoint Presentation option for this assignment is 12-15 slides (with a separate reference slide). Your presentation MUST include notes that contain 100-150 words per slide (this is your script). Be sure to include citations for quotations and paraphrases with references in APA format and style.

WEEK 1 DISCUSSION

Experience with Writing

Scholarly/academic writing necessitates different sets of standards when compared to other forms of writing. It is a form of writing where the writer must avoid bias, build a compelling argument and incorporate evidence. It requires the use of a language that is concise, clear, and error-free.

My experience with writing has been a bit fulfilling. However, I have not been able to achieve all my writing goals because of various weaknesses. In my writing experience, I have experienced a few issues, with the most evident one being the endless agreement errors. Besides that my first language is not English, it is Spanish, means grammar is not 100% perfect. Most of the problems that have been raised by my lectures have a lot to do with the incorrect use of subjects, pronouns, verbs, and the words replaced by these elements, and this has resulted to the occurrence of agreement errors. This has been my biggest hindrance, and I thoroughly need to work on it to improve my writing. Perfecting my writing skills will help me achieve most of my academic as well as my professional goals. There are other minor issues like occasional use of mixed constructions, but I would first like to deal with this giant problem before the others.

Based on my research, there are various strategies I can apply to overcome this challenge. The first strategy is to identify the sentences that are likely to pose problems; for instance, those with mixed subjects, collective nouns/pronouns, and verbs or those with inverted order of words. I may also read the sentences loudly to listen and appreciate their meanings. Using this technique, I will be able to pinpoint the agreement errors after reading them out loud. Additionally, I can also locate the verb (s) and link their association to the subject to solve the errors. I believe that with continuous practice, I will be able to address this issue together with the other minor issues related to my writing. By the end of this course, my writing skills will be on a higher new level; hence I will be able to realize my professional and academic goals.

What: This assignment will take you through several steps to help ensure that you have a robust understanding of yourself and what is important to you personally.

When: The due date and time are posted in the syllabus. You can submit the assignment early. However, you will not be permitted to submit the assignment late.

Why: Some say that one cannot effectively manage and lead others effectively unless he or she first has a thorough understanding of him or herself.

How: Research, discover, think, re-think, reflect, have fun. Begin your answers immediately after each question. Do not delete the instructions. If you choose, you may change the color of your ink and/or change to italics to help make your answer stand out. Plan to write about 2-3 pages or so including these instructions and questions.

  1. Rank order. Now, go back in and re-order these strengths and areas for improvement in rank order. Strengths, in this sense, are positive and should be ordered in terms of 1 equaling “most strength.” Areas for improvement should be ordered in terms of 1 equaling “most need for improvement.”
  1. Learning points. After reviewing both lists, discuss some of what you learned about yourself from this assignment. Did you discover any surprises—either good or not so good? Do you have any plans for improvement in the list of things that you are not particularly good at doing?
  1. Feedback. It is normal that you will complete this assignment without outside help. However, I suggest that you confide in a trusted friend, mentor, or loved one by asking him or her the same questions about you (don’t show your lists until after that person provides an initial list). Try to have a positive and meaningful conversation that allows you to benefit. Now, answer this question: Reflect upon this conversation (with the trusted friend, mentor, or loved one) and discuss some of what you learned—either positive or negative.
  1. Apply strengths. Is there opportunity for you to capitalize on your strengths beyond what you are already doing to increase your chances for greater personal and or career success? Discuss.
  1. Behavior changes. Can you effectively mitigate those areas where you could use improvement to become an even more effective person? Discuss.
