Imagining Your Ethical Future

Watch the videos about John Hunter’s work in education, listed in the link below.

http://www.ted.com/talks/john_hunter_on_the_world_peace_game.html

As you think about Hunter’s career and its impact on students consider the following quotes from A Professor’s Duties:

The function of the teacher is among the most important in our culture. He not only transmits essential knowledge and skills but, when he takes his calling seriously, strongly influences the formation of habits and the development of a philosophy of life. Yet this high calling is not valued at its true worth by the community nor, ironically enough, by teachers themselves. (Hook as cited in Markie, 1994, p. 89-90)

Socrates suggested that teachers are essentially midwives, seeking to help in the difficult process in which each student gives birth to the knowledge that gestates within. Educational philosophies since the Enlightenment have functioned out of another paradigm, with knowledge on the outside to be placed into the blank receptacle of the mind. The efforts to place this exterior knowledge within have frequently done violence, both to the student and the knowledge itself. It may be helpful to remember that, at least etymologically, the Socratic view is more accurate—educate means literally educe, to draw out. (Churchill as cited in Markie, 1994, p. 153)

Post a brief one-page reflection on the following:

  • In light of the model for valuing and attending to a long vocational calling presented by Hunter and Hook (1994), imagine your ethical future as an educator. What are the ethical dreams you have developed and what might it take to accomplish them?
  • Include your thoughts about how your peers have shaped your hopes for the future.

film essay paper 2

QUESTION 0NE

Assignment for Film Two

Part 1: View a feature film made between 1970 – 2000 you have not seen before (or will see later in this class) by a great director or featuring a great actor or actress.

Just as you did in the first paper, comment on the specific film you saw. Pay particular attention to the screenplay, camerawork (cinematography) the editing (montage) and the sound (this can include the music). You may also address special effects. Again, as you did in the first paper, talk about what you like, and what you dislike, about what you saw? Whydo you like the things you like, and why do you dislike the things you dislike? Is the film a good film, or is it not?

Part 2: Now that you have commented on the specific film you viewed, see if you can draw some general conclusions about the work of the director and one of the main actors oractresses. Be sure to comment on the overall impression you had of the film, including how you see it as an example of the its genre and time period. Remember, this is not a researchpaper. I am interested in what you have to say, not in what you can learn by reading up on the film or the filmmaker.

Part 3: Go back to the “My Criteria for Quality in Film” page. Based on your viewing of this week’s film, add Five new general conclusions. These statements should be numbered (6)through (10). Be sure to include entire page, including all of your previous criteria statements.

ASSIGNMENT TWO

Watch a movie made between 1970 – 1980 that you have not already seen for this class and answer the following questions.

Describe at least three special effects, camera tricks, stunts or camera angles that caught your attention. Why do you think they were important to the story.

How does sound play a part in the film you watched? Identify at least three places that sound stood out in the film.

How does color play a part in the film you watched for this week? Identify at least three places that color stood out in the film.

Respond to at least two of your classmates.

Case Study Chapter 7

PERSONALITY THEORY (PSY 211) – ONLINE COURSE

The case study should be one page, single-spaced and must apply concepts from the unit 7 to explain the behavior of a person in a manner similar to that required in the term paper.

TEXT BOOK: Friedman & Schustack, Personality: Classic theories and modern research. Sixth edition. Pearson.

Be careful about using fictional characters for your case studies. Many fictional characters are deliberately written to be unrealistic, contradictory and complex for dramatic purposes, which can make them very difficult to explain.

PLEASE DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES BESIDES THE REQUIRED TEXT BOOK

A common application of personality theory is a case study of a single individual that applies one or more theoretical views to understanding a person. A good case study explains the causes of a person’s current behavior, makes predictions about their future behavior, and provides the information required for interventions designed to change the person. For example, a case study may be used to assist psychotherapy, personnel decisions, legal decisions, educational placements, etc.

For this assignment, you will write a brief case study that addresses the issues below.

The case study should be one page in which you apply some of the concepts from this unit to explain the behavior of a person you know, or someone you know about (historic or fictional characters are acceptable). This paragraph should:

1) Describe an important example of the person’s attitudes or behavior, which defines his/her personality.

2) Describe exactly how certain concepts from one of the theories for this unit explain the creation of the person’s attitudes and/or behavior described above. Highlight the key terms for the concepts used in your explanation.

3) Based on the concepts above, predict how the person’s attitudes and/or behavior will or will not change over time, and explain your expectation.

4) Apply research evidence to evaluate the strengths and/or weaknesses of the theory in explaining the person’s attitudes or behavior. Cite and describe a particular study from the text that provides scientific evidence, and explain how it supports or refutes the explanation above. You may need to find a study outside the text, such as those posted in some of the Canvas modules.

5) Describe how the explanation of the case above differs from that of another theory covered in another text chapter. Also, describe how the explanation is similar to that of another theory in another chapter. Explain how this second theory explains something not explained, or not explained as well by the first theory used above.

HRM 4485- WK4 DB-Internal Consisitency

Please read the case below and answer the questions. Each answer must be at least 200 words and there must be 3 resources provided.

Internal Consistency at Customers First

After 3 months in her new role as Director of Human Resources (HR) at Customers First, Deborah Ketson feels confident she has identified the significant HR issues at the company. She has prioritized the issues and is meeting with company president, Joan Bates, to make her recommendations.Deborah is prepared to discuss her top priority, which is to conduct an organization-wide job analysis and job evaluation project in order to start building a more internally consistent pay structure.

Customers First is a company that provides customer service for other companies.Small to-medium-sized companies outsource their customer service function to Customers First, who manages all customer service for their clients through a call center and also via an online customer service center. The company works with a diverse group of clients ranging from small retail stores to larger online retailers.Customers First has grown quickly in the 5 years since Joan started the company and now employs over 150 customer service representatives (CSRs) and other support staff.

The company’s quick growth has led to several problems with their compensation structure.Much of the company’s hiring has occurred in response to a new contract and pay was set based on the current market rate for CSRs in order to attract the right talent. For example, an early client was a small retail store that needed fairly simple customer support.Four CSRs were hired and their pay was set at just slightly above minimum wage.In comparison, a more recent client required hiring 18 CSRs.The labor market was competitive at the time and the company hired these 18 new employees at a pay rate well above what others at the company were paid.Such variance has occurred often in the hiring process, resulting in groups of CSRs at much different levels of pay for doing substantially similar work.

Deborah has heard many complaints from the supervisors about inequities in the pay of the CSRs.The supervisors are concerned that the inequities may lead to turnover among some of the staff.Deborah has examined the pay rates of the CSRs across the organization and agrees with the supervisors that there are some concerns. One particular concern is that the lowest paid group of CSRs is primarily female, while the highest paid group includes all male employees.By talking with the supervisors, Deborah has learned that there are some CSRs with different levels of responsibilities and skills, but they all hold the same job title.Deborah believes that an organization-wide job analysis and job evaluation is necessary to build an internally consistent compensation structure.

However, when she shared her recommendations with Joan, she did not receive the response she expected.Joan is resistant of the job analysis and job evaluation process as she thinks that having such a structured compensation system will limit the company’s ability to be flexible in the marketplace.Often hiring happens quickly in response to a new client contract and they must hire the right skill set, which might vary based on the current market rates.Further, Joan suggested the entire project would be too time-consuming for Deborah and the other staff that would need to be involved. She felt their time would be better spent on other concerns such as recruiting new staff.

QUESTIONS:

1.Do you think that job analysis and job evaluation will benefit Customers First? Don’t just say yes or no; you must explain why.

2.What is your opinion on Joan’s view on job analysis and job evaluation?

3.What do you recommend Customers First do?Why?

Code of Ethics

This assignment provides you with an opportunity to create a code of ethics for you and your family, as well as to explain the strategies and thought processes that went into developing the code. First, create an original code of ethics for your family by thinking about your family as an organization. In your code of ethics, please include the following items:

  • guiding principles,
  • purpose of the code,
  • core values,
  • training and education (How will you train and educate others about the code?),
  • definitions,
  • who it covers,
  • mission statement, and
  • other pertinent elements you feel necessary to have a comprehensive code of ethics.

The next part of this assignment involves an evaluation, where you describe the thought process behind the code of ethics that you prepared. For the evaluation part of this assignment, draft an essay to include the following items:

  • Identify the key roles of those who have a vested interest in the ethical behavior that your code defines.
  • Explain the strategies and thought processes that you used to formulate the code.
  • Explain how you would strategically implement and communicate the code to others in the organization.
  • Explain how you will monitor the practice of ethical decision-making.
  • Provided that laws exist and have been enacted for resolving conflict, why do we also need a code of ethics?

In the process of writing your code, you must research the topic of codes of ethics and incorporate at least two articles, no older than five years. Your code and evaluation must be at least 1,000 words. Format the code as you like; however, be sure it is professional and legible. Format the evaluation part of the assignment by using APA Style.
