Topic 2: The Nervous System

Nervous system tissue contains two groups of cells: neuroglia and neurons. Neuroglial cells provide many essential functions to help keep the nervous system running efficiently. Neurons form the structural and functional foundation of the nervous system as they have the important job of transmitting signals throughout the body. Additionally, when damage occurs to a neuron due to disease or injury, signals cannot be transmitted, and paralysis can occur.

You will be assigned the neuroglial cell called Ependymal cells

THEN, do some additional research, and answer the following questions below for both neuroglia and neurons.

  • Which neuroglial cell was assigned to you and what is the function of this cell?
  • What would happen if your assigned neuroglial cells were destroyed or became dysfunctional – what effect would there be to the nervous system? Could it lead to a disorder or disease? If so, what?
  • Neurons transmit impulses via the release of neurotransmitters. Choose one type of neurotransmitter and briefly discuss its role in the nervous system.
  • Research a nerve regeneration study (e.g., using University Library, Google Scholar). In 2–3 sentences, summarize the study including its outcomes. What are your thoughts on nerve regeneration – do you think this is something you will see in your lifetime? Why or why not?

Hi Class,

Employees are what drives a thriving and successful company, you could have the best product in the world; however, the staff that drives creating the product and marketing it is what makes the product successful. If the staff is happy and rewarded for their hard work and efforts then the company thrives and there a large scale of profitability that is created from sales of the products. When employee relations is bad and the staff is over worked and under paid, companies usually see loss and deteriating of sales and profits.

Unions are a very key component in companies present day: many companies require you to join a union if you are to work at their establishment. Unions bring employee questions and concerns to the employer and in many cases those demands are met. In cases where unions aren’t allowed or given as an options many people starting rioting, such as teachers and factory workers. Int this cases usually demanrds aren’t met since those employees need work and will go back to work usually the day after they riot. Overall, unions and employee satisfaction go hand in hand, happy employee results in a profitable company

Respond to the following in a minimum of 100 words

I believe that unions are still relevant today as they were in the past. A couple of things that labor unions try to achieve are increasing wages, making sure that working conditions are safe, and gaining more benefits for employees and their families. Unions play a critical role within the workforce for the quality of life of the union member and provide representation for fair treatment within the workplace. Some issues in the past included child labor, unlivable wages, and sweatshop conditions. The profitability within the company is brought on by staying focused in the work. This is the result of continuous training that may be costly and taken from project margins. To make a company competitive, money must be spent to make sure that the employees are trained to do the job at the best of their ability to produce the profit for the company. There are other methods of getting this accomplished such as events and seminars that will allow employees to gain the knowledge needed to stay competitive. When a company can stay competitive, there is a morale boost and the work performance of the employees are increased.

Your manager asks you to see a client who appears to be decompensating. He has stopped coming to the center and his wife asks you for assistance. She says he is not eating, sleeps all day and rarely gets out of the house. He is talking gibberish to himself and mumbles profanities. She is afraid that he may harm her or their 3-year-old child. She further tells you she thinks he may be doing drugs but does not know which ones. She says the last time he was like this he attempted suicide through overdosing on his psych meds. He takes Ritalin for adult ADHD.

  • What is your first priority in this case? Why?
  • What type of treatment would you suggest? Why?
  • What types of therapy might help this client stay on track? Why?

PICOT Question

In post-surgical patients (P) does the use of heparins (I) versus physical methods (C) (compression stocks and calf/foot pumps) prevent deep vein thrombosis (O).

Search Terms

Search terms are essential in finding appropriate and relative articles. The search terms used were initially, “DVT” and “DVT prevention”. However, in order to be more specific the terms “DVT prevention” with “surgery”, “heparin”, and “compression stockings”.

Databases Utilized for Search

The databases used were Thoreua and CINAHL Plus with Full Text. CINAHL is a great database and has more than 750 journals related to nursing and health care. CINAHL also provides systematic reviews, controlled trials and cohort studies to name a few. I truly appreciate this database (Walden University Library, n.d.b).These two databases provided an abundance of information to work with in order to create the PICOT formulated question.

Search Results, Articles Returned, and Changes from use of Boolean Operators

Initially, when searching, I used the terms “DVT” and “DVT prevention”. However, these results yielded 1,000 or more articles and research studies. In order to limit the number of results, I used boolean operators such as “AND”. Boolean operators assist with combining different words and phrases. They include “AND”, “OR” and “NOT” (Library of Congress, n.d.a). I believe boolean operators truly assisted in providing great results. After using the search “DVT prevention AND surgery AND heparin AND compression stockings” I was able to yield 4 really great results.

Database Strategies to Increase Rigor and Effectiveness

In order to be more successful in finding a great research article or research study there are a few things one must consider in order to be effective. First, one must use boolean operators, which was used in this case. Second, it is important to use limits in order to; for example, find a more time appropriate article. Limits can be set for time, language and location of the published material (Library of Congress, n.d.). Other ways to increase rigor and effectiveness include collaborating with librarians and using full-text articles (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).

Assignment Description

Case Information

Fran S. was arrested for prescription fraud when she tried to obtain prescription painkillers at a pharmacy with a fake prescription. You have been asked to assess her situation and make treatment recommendations to the court.

Fran S. is a 32-year-old employee at a local bank. She was briefly hospitalized after a car accident 14 months ago and sustained injuries to her neck and back. Her doctor prescribed painkillers for these injuries. He told her that she should only take the painkillers for a few months, but Fran found that she liked the feelings of calm and relaxation that the painkillers produced. Even though the pain from her neck and back went away, she kept telling her doctor that she was in pain so that he would continue prescribing the drugs. When her own doctor told her that he would no longer prescribe the painkillers for her, she found it difficult to go for more than a few days without the painkillers (she reported feeling anxious, irritable, and “not herself” when she stopped taking them) and found another doctor who would prescribe her painkillers.

Fran told herself that the painkillers helped her get through her day, but she started missing deadlines at work and repeatedly coming in late, putting her job in jeopardy. Her husband also reported a difference in her behavior, saying that she was detached, much more irritable and likely to start arguments over minor issues, which had not been a problem in the past. Fran started taking larger doses of the painkillers because she had stopped feeling their effects at the smaller doses. Her second doctor became suspicious of how frequently she needed prescriptions and refused to prescribe her any more drugs. Fran tried again to stop using the painkillers but found that she was experiencing problems, such as headaches, blurred vision, and anxiety, when she was not taking the painkillers. She could not find another doctor to prescribe her the painkillers, so Fran started submitting fake prescriptions to the pharmacy.

For our mini-ethics bowl we will be using 3 cases. “Universal Healthcare” pp. 148-149; “Infant Medical Futility” p. 328; and “The Snowden Leak” p. 334-336. You must be familiar with all 3 cases. You will write and present a case analysis on one of these, and you may be asked to comment on another teams presentation of one of the other two cases.

This Week: Meet with your groups and practice your presentations. You will be responsible for presenting one case with your team, commenting on another case, and judging another case.

Sunday: Turn in a written case analysis on your assigned case (this can be similar to your teammates or your own original case analysis). It must be roughly 2 pages or about 600-800 words. The case analysis should include: 1. the response to the case that you think is morally best. 2. An argument supporting this claim which identifies the moral principles or theories that most directly apply. You should also include any relevant facts that you discover about the case. 3. At least one argument in favor of an alternative response and an explanation of why the response you support is better than this response.
