In the Stanford Prison Experiment, subjects were randomly assigned to the roles of guard or prisoner and then enacted these roles in a simulated prison in the basement of the Stanford psychology building. The experiment became too real–the guards began mistreating the prisoners, and some of the prisoners suffered psychological breakdowns. The experiment was terminated after only 6 days instead of the planned 2 weeks. Research this study, and think about the ethical issues involved.
