  • Go to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) Website and review cases regarding diversity. Note: Enter the Website and in the search box under “Press Releases” type “diversity”. Review three of the results of your search. Next, propose three ways that an organization can increase diversity within itself. Take a position on whether diversity is or is not important and determine how the methods you provided support your position.
  • Evaluate ways that an organization can measure and reward compliance. Determine if organizations that measure and reward compliance are more or less likely to experience lawsuits.

“Job Applicants” Please respond to the following:

  • Examine two ways that companies can recruit qualified job applicants. Determine which method may be most effective and predict how it could benefit the company when hiring new employees.
  • Go to O*Net Online’s Website and review at least two (2) different occupation descriptions. Next, compare the two selected occupation descriptions. Recommend two changes to make the occupation descriptions more marketable. Provide examples to support your recommendations. Be sure to provide details of the occupation descriptions in case others want to use them.

“Company Competitive Advantage” Please respond to the following:

  • Propose two ways that a company can gain a competitive advantage over other companies when striving to recruit job applicants. Determine whether technology has assisted or hindered the process.
  • Imagine you are head of the HR department, and you have been asked to review two applicants for the sales clerk position at your company. Alice, the first applicant has 10 years of experience in sales work, but can be easily distracted. She will not work on commission and cannot work weekends. She can be a little obstinate, but has an excellent job history. Mary, the second applicant, has one year experience, but very congenial and loves working with people. Her work schedule is very flexible, but she can become a little stressed at times and has been known for having to quietly leave and regroup for a short time. Determine which candidate would be the “right fit”. Support your decision by describing the thought process that lead up to your decision.

  • Human Resource Management and Project Management
  • You are a project manager for a large hospitality firm (e.g., Marriott International) who will be in charge of the firm’s HQ office relocation. You have been asked to speak to the HR staff about the move and many of them have very little understanding of project management. Also, they are fearful that this project will end up being a failure since other projects have failed at the firm. Explain to them the key elements of project management and its relationship to human resources management (HRM). Be sure that your explanation curtails their fears of project management.

  • Imagine you are the HR director of a growing international staffing organization that services both North America and South America. The CEO has come to grips that the HR group, which is currently decentralized, is in need of restructuring to account for the expected increase in revenues. The CEO has asked for your opinion on how to best restructure the firm. Based upon your knowledge, recommend an organizational structure (e.g., functional, matrix, or projectized) that will provide growth for the firm. Also, assess the influence that this project will have on the customers (who are located throughout the Americas) that are serviced by the HR group.

  • You have been hired to oversee the decentralization of your client’s human resources function in which corporate functions will be relocated to each regional office. Your boss wants you to start the project immediately, but you are insisting that a project charter be established first. Explain to your boss the importance of a project charter and what could happen if you decided to proceed ahead without a charter.

Then, assess the importance of business ethics to today’s organizations. Suggest two (2) actions that human resources can take in order to influence positive ethics in an organization.   • From the case study, give your opinion on which theory you believe dominates business today, and explain why. Take a position as to whether or not you believe Monsanto was successful in its effort to meet stakeholder interests.   • Read the article titled, “Sarbanes-Oxley Act: HR’s Role in Ensuring Compliance and Driving Organizational Change.” Next, suggest two (2) actions that HR should take in order to ensure an organization’s compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley. Explain the manner in which HR policies and practices are instrumental in implementing, and ensuring compliance, with legal mandates.
  • Examine the key individual and organizational factors that influence an ethical decision-making framework in resolving ethical dilemmas. Outline a guide that HR can use to implement principles and core values in ethical decision making in an organization. Provide a rationale for your response.
