Leadership and Communication

Questions:

1. Analyse a list of traits or qualities that mark a caring teacher and those that mark a strict

teacher (you should probably not name any specific lecturers as part of this exercise). How

many of the items on your list are also qualities of a caring leader? What does teaching

have in common with leadership?

2. Make a list of five influential people, those from whom you seek advice or from whom you

take direction (for example, teachers, your parents, your physician and so forth). Why do

you seek advice from these people? What is the source of their authority? Are they all

authoritative in the same way? What does authority contribute to leadership?

3. What is the relationship between leadership, conflict resolution, listening, and ethical

communication? What do these have to do with interpersonal interaction?

4. Did any of the leader you think display indications of ability, sociability, commitment, or

communicative skill? If so, how? Is it possible to symbolize such qualities as confidence,

trust, dependability, integrity, or work ethic? If not, why not? If so, how might such things

be suggested?

5. Read the following scenario carefully. Drawing on everything, you have learned about

leadership and about interpersonal communication generally, identify the leadership issues

inherent in the situation and suggest what Mezna might have done differently. Prepare to

discuss your analysis with the class, or submit your findings in writing as directed by your

lecturer.

Mezna recently started a new job after earning a master’s degree. She’s now an instructor

at English College, where her primary assignment is teaching Technical communication for

the college’s Probation’s students.

This is Mezna’s very first job ever. Nevertheless, Mezna is enthusiastic and prepared to

work hard. She is confident that her literature degrees have provided the expertise she

needs to teach communication to her probation students. After all, how much can you

really say about that? Mezna is also proud of another of her exceptional efforts as a teacher:

she has put her lectures on computerized slides, and has posted them on her website for

the students.

Lately, though, Mezna’s enthusiasm has been dampened, because these students just don’t

get it. Their attendance is extremely poor, they don’t seem to care about the course she’s

presenting, and to top it off their reports are just lousy. You’d think they would welcome

some intellectual stimulation for a change, and that they would put some effort into their

work. But no, they don’t. So Mezna has concluded that she is simply wasting her valuable

time: these students aren’t very bright or very serious about their studies. She can’t wait

until the college assigns her to a different group, who will surely be more motivated than

this crowd.

In any case, though, she has more to think about right now. Each term, the English

Department organizes tours to nearby regional colleges. The students are required to

attend, of course, and usually some of the faculty go along. Mezna has been invited, but

she can’t frankly see the point—why would she want to spend a whole day parading through

some boring prison? It’s bound to be dirty and unpleasant, not to mention dangerous, and

it’s not as though she’s ever going to have anything to do with such places. So no, she’s

not going to go along. Now all she has to do is figure out how to politely turn down the

invitation.

If you were Mezna’s mentor, what advice might you give her?
