dscussion question

Question 1:

This week we have studied art that is produced by cultures very different from our own.  Without a cultural frame of reference it is often challenging for us to gain an understanding or even an appreciation of a work of art that reflects a visual aesthetic that is different.  In 3 well developed paragraphs, discuss:

  1. In what specific ways is our understanding of a work of art dependent on an understanding of the religious and cultural beliefs from which the work arose?
  2. What can we assume about a work of art without such knowledge?
  3. Looking at a work of art such as the Taj Mahal, which is the world’s most recognized building, how does not knowing the story or context for its construction shape our perception of this as a master work of art?  How does your perception change of this structure once you know the story and reasons for its construction?

Be sure to explain your ideas clearly and support them by discussing specific works of art that you have read about this week, talking about how they illustrate and support your ideas.

Question 2:

All of the cultures that we have looked at this week built architectural monuments, but few have survived intact.  Often these monuments embody the social, spiritual, political and religious ideas of the culture that created it. One of the few to have survived is the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. In 3 well developed paragraphs, discuss:

  1. What was the function of the Forbidden City?
  2. How was it designed to reflect the social hierarchies of the Ming dynasty?
  3. What other monumental work of architecture did you learn about this week that also reflects these concerns and how?

Be sure to explain your ideas clearly and support them by discussing specific works of art that you have read about this week, talking about how they illustrate and support your ideas.

participant reactivity 1

Participant Reactivity

Think about how participants might react to environmental cues in an experimental situation and create a hypothetical study on assertiveness. It is important for you to remember that the study should not be designed to test participant reactivity. Summarize the study in a few sentences, and explain how some specific items in the laboratory environment in your made-up study might cause participants to respond in a particular way. What could be done in your study to reduce participant reactivity?

Instructions

LTD Acceptance is a private property and auto insurance carrier that specializes in sports cars and motorcycles. This organization is owned by LTD Capital, a large equity group with over 15 holdings. LTD Acceptance is the parent company’s single largest holding as it drives 70% of total revenue. Due to the inherent risk involved in that segment of the market, many of LTD Acceptance’s competitors do not offer policies for sports cars or motorcycles. This market segment is underserved which is why the organization has 20,000 active policies for a sports car or a motorcycle.

LTD is headquartered in Houston, TX. LTD does not sell insurance directly to the public. Instead, it uses third-party agents to sell its policies. LTD handles all customer service needs including claims intake, policy services, and general questions. The company operates in four states: California, Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. Currently, LTD does not have an active system in place to ensure that its agents are in fact using LTD guidelines to screen potential policyholders. However, no evidence of negligence has emerged so far as the organization has yet to have a year in which it was not profitable. LTD has also had the good fortune of not suffering losses because of natural disasters or catastrophic events.

LTD Acceptance has 18,000 active policies in its book of business, and the firm is yet to experience a year period with high loss ratios. To increase its profitability ratios, LTD has invested the premium dollars across various asset classes. LTD’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) believes the organization should take a calculated risk and allocate the assets more aggressively. As the senior risk analyst, you have carefully analyzed the organization’s numbers and strongly believe that LTD’s favorable loss ratios are a result of chance and not through the sensible use of the firm’s systematic framework for managing risk. You also believe the CFO is purely looking at the rewards and not the risks. Therefore, you do not believe the firm should increase risk exposures at this time.

To convey your point of view, you have decided to conduct a cost-benefit analysis report which should include the following:

  • For this report, provide an introduction which discusses the relationship between risk and reward. Using the information provided in the background of this case, explain why the organization may appear to be in a better position on paper than it really is.
  • Include at least two ways how each party listed below can be adversely impacted if the organization suffers losses as a result of a more aggressive approach.
    • Policyholders
    • Shareholders
    • Vendors
    • Creditors
    • Employees
  • Also include a discussion on how effective financial management aligns with overall risk management.
  • Your conclusion should highlight how the risk assumed in an organization’s activities should be consistent with its long term goals. All business activities include inherent risks. Thus, all the activities and risks the firm takes should help them reach their long-term goals. If the managers engage in activities that create risks outside of this scope, it can create problems. For instance, most firms have the goal of driving sustainability. However, if they are highly leveraged, then seeking additional credit for a project can derail the long term goal of sustainability.

assignment 2 use coercion interrogations

Assignment 2: The Use of Coercion in Interrogations

The American Psychological Association (APA), the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Medical Association all oppose the use of coercion in interrogation. These organizations strictly prohibit their members from participating in interrogations in which coercion is used. These organizations claim that coercion is unethical.

The resolution of the APA (2008) on coercion in interrogation includes the following statement:

BE IT RESOLVED that the American Psychological Association affirms that there are no exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether induced by a state of war or threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, that may be invoked as a justification for torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment, including the invocation of laws, regulations, or orders. (para. 7)

Publicly revealed Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) transcripts and interviews with CIA employees detail that harsh methods were used to develop information from suspected terrorists. Use the key words “John Kiriakou interview with Brian Ross” on a search engine to read a CIA officer’s revelation on the methods used to develop information from a suspected terrorist.

A potential logical conclusion about the treatment of detained combatants is that coercion works and, because it works so well, it can be justified under some exceptional circumstances.
