assignment 2 lasa 1 analytical summaries

Assignment 2: LASA 1—Analytical Summaries

For this assignment, you will compose two short critical essays explaining and evaluating arguments by other authors. This assignment allows you to analyze an issue from a variety of perspectives and assess arguments for or against the issue. By focusing your attention on how the original authors use evidence and reasoning to construct and support their positions, you can recognize the value of critical thinking in public discourse.

Read the two articles “Shooting in the Dark“, and “Focusing on the How of Violence” and write two separate analytical summaries.

This assignment has two parts.

Part 1—First Article

Write an analytical summary of the article focusing on the article’s main claims. Include the following:

  • Provide a brief summary of the argument presented in the article.
  • Identify and discuss three ways the author uses evidence to support assertions.
  • Analyze how the author signals this usage through elements such as word choices, transitions, or logical connections.

Part 2—Second Article

Write an analytical summary of the article focusing on the article’s main claims. Include the following:

  • Provide a brief summary of the argument presented in the article.
  • Identify any value-based assertions in the article and how the author supports these value-based conclusions with evidence.
  • Discuss how this evidence does or does not demonstrate relevance, consistency, transparency, and speculation.
  • Analyze how the author signals the use of these elements through language. For example, word choices, transitions, or logical connections.

Write a 1,000–1,200 word paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.doc.

By the due date assigned, deliver your assignment to the Submissions Area.

Below are the 10 “Substance Areas” of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR), a professional organization whose mission it is toTo provide an educational forum for family researchers, educators, and practitioners to share in the development and dissemination of knowledge about families and family relationships, establish professional standards, and work to promote family well-being” (http://www.ncfr.org/).

During the 8 weeks of this senior seminar students will, with the guidance of their instructor, select and conduct a review of peer reviewed literature related to the 10 substance areas (Note: All articles must be retrieved from the APUS online library).  The phrase “peer reviewed” means that a publication contains articles reviewed and deemed academically sound and scientifically rigorous by the author’s peers in the field.

Students will select, from the larger body of child and family development literature, three peer reviewed journal articles per substance area and review, summarize and critique them in one paper per area (each article review should be between 1 and 1½ pages – double-spaced, equating to 3-4 ½ pages per substance area).   The format for this assignment should be:

  1. Substance Area Name
    • Research article 1 (include the title of the article)
    • Research article 2 (include the title of the article)
    • Research article 3 (include the title of the article)

letter summary and evaluation

Letter to Friend or Family Member

► READ “Salvation” by Langston Hughes “228-230”, comparing and contrasting it with “The Jacket.” How are they alike? How are they different?

► WRITE a letter to someone not in this class, examining a thematic connection between “Salvation” and “The Jacket,” and your own personal connection to this concept.

Example:

Young Soto in “The Jacket” and young Hughes in “Salvation” both experience shame within

their community that affects their sense of identity. Has this ever happened to you?.

As you compose the letter, think about ways to use evidence to interest your reader in these connections: you

might, for instance, tell a story that will ground the idea in a common understanding. Think about what

evidence the reader will need to be told so that the connection will make sense. Establish sufficient context for

understanding.

► FORMAT: Your letter (or epistolary essay) should be two to three double-spaced pages long and typed in 12

point Times New Roman font, MLA format. You must make clear in the text of your letter what you are doing,

what articles you are writing about, what phrases, images, or ideas you borrowed. The recipent is not expecting

this letter and will have no idea why you are writing unless you somehow make it clear.

(Again, don’t tell your reader that you are satisfying a course requirement. Get into the letter some other way.)
