Fictional Character AnalysisPurpose

In this activity, you will demonstrate your understanding of the basic theories and techniques of abnormal psychology.

Guidelines

Pick a character from a favorite book (fiction or nonfiction) or from a favorite movie. Choose a character that you believe has a psychological disorder (e.g., Sylvia Plath, Antwone Fisher). Describe the character and his or her problems, using this discussion as a foundation for diagnosing the individual and planning a treatment program. Make your diagnosis using theInternational Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10 link).

Carefully take the reader through the steps you followed to decide on a diagnosis and a type of treatment (e.g., therapy, possible medication, referrals to other professionals). Describe any other recommendations you have, including assessments you would want completed to help accurately diagnose your character. Make sure you have plenty of information to support your diagnosis (i.e., clarify why the character meets the criteria according to theICD-10codes).

The completed work should be 6–8 pages long. At least 5 Scholarly Journal Citations.

Additional recommendations:Make sure you support your diagnosis and treatment decisions with outside resources. Discuss how and why your proposed treatments would be effective for your character, and in what ways.

part 1

According to the textbook (Chapter 7) “The IQ test has been synonymous with intelligence for over a century.”

Discuss the strengths and limitations of defining intelligence based on the performance on a standardized test.

How does the study of twins help us understand the nature-nurture controversy with respect to intelligence better?

Do you feel IQ tests fail to tell the whole story of someone’s intelligence? If so, how do they fall short?

Have you ever taken and IQ test? What was your experience?

Your Discussion should be at least 250 words in length, but not more than 750 words. Use APA citations and references for the textbook and any other sources used.

Part 2

During the 1990s there were a lot of cases of reported child abuse based on repressed memory. Many individuals were arrested and jailed, many of which were innocent. Sigmund Freud believed that individuals repress their memories (not consciously) so that their painful effects would not have to be experienced. There is a lot of controversy as to whether repressed memories can be trusted.

In this assignment, look for a news article (old or new) describing the resurface of repressed memory or studies on it. Then write a paper summarizing the article, what was the conclusion of the story/study?

Based on your readings and assignments, under what circumstances are repressed memories more likely to surface? In your opinion, what are the possible effects of having these memories resurface? What are your personal beliefs about your mind repressing memories that may be too painful? Do you find some truth to it?

The Written Assignment should be 2-3 double spaced pages in length, not including title or reference pages. Make sure your assignment is APA format with double-spacing, Times New Roman, 12-point font, and 1” margins. Include citations and a list of references in APA format.

Part 3

For this Learning Journal, consider the following:

How is memory related to intelligence? Consider examples from your own experience.
List 3 strategies that you use, or will use, to enhance your memory.
The Learning Journal entry should be a minimum of 400 words and not more than 750 words. Use APA citations and references if you use ideas from the readings or other sources.

Methodology Theoretical/Thematic Study

Project Part Three: Methodology Theoretical/Thematic Study

For a theoretical/thematic study, part Three includes:

  1. Overview and Re-statement of the Problem The student will provide a brief overview of the study and restatement of the problem at the beginning of this project. The research questions are repeated and the applicable group and key areas the research will be identified.
  2. Research Method-A brief discussion of the underlying philosophical assumptions of theoretical/thematic studies and why a theoretical/thematic literature review is the appropriate method of study to answer the research questions is provided. A well-reasoned articulation of how theoretical/thematic studies are legitimate alternative research procedures in psychology is provided. Use at least two peer-reviewed sources to ground your discussion.
  3. Target Participants-Provide a description of the group overall and select criteria relevant to the study.
  4. Data Collection-The candidate explains how the literature presented in part 2 along with additional literature will be selected in support of the research questions. Key word choices and relationships will be identified which articulate the specific selection of the literature and databases.
  5. Data Analysis-The student explains how the key points and observations of the study are distilled, broken down, and thoroughly examined. This will provide a discussion for the required analysis supporting each research question and will describe the approach which will be used to guide the analysis using a methods book.

Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Studies

For a qualitative study or quantitative study, part Three includes:

An introduction which encompasses the re-statement of the problem and the research questions. Include the hypotheses in the introduction of a quantitative study.

Research Method-A statement of either qualitative or quantitative methodology should follow. Include a discussion of how the research design whether phenomenological, narrative, case studies, correlational, descriptive, causal-comparative, or quasi-experimental is the legitimate, appropriate

research design. Use at least two peer-reviewed sources to ground your discussion.

  1. ????The student will describe the location of the participants; discuss the criteria for selecting those participants (i.e., what characteristics do they possess that make them suitable for the area of investigation) and the process by which they were selected (such as random sampling, snowball, etc.); provide the number of participants in the study, including any important distinctions existing between them (e.g., gender or ethnicity).
  2. Instrumentation???? Provide a description of the instruments or protocols that will be used surveys, interviews, observations, or artifacts. Include all instrumentation as an appendix. Describe in detail the instruments to be used in the study. All questions or criteria should be clearly linked to the literature presented in part two.
  3. Data Collection????The student will provide a concise but thorough description of the steps used to collect data from the participants. Describe any recruitment processes and/or communication; describe the informed consent process; and note the data collection schedule. If interviews are conducted indicate the length, the number, where conducted, and stipulate they will be recorded. For surveys describe the procedures for how they will be distributed and collected. Include all other procedures and processes needed to replicate the study. If artifacts are used, describe the process by which the data will be procured, selected, and utilized. For any other methods of data collection provide a complete description of all processes.
  4. Data Analysis-The student describes the analysis of the data that was performed as well as the specific steps taken. It is important to reference a research methods book to detail this process. Researcher bias, validity, reliability and other research factors should be addressed as appropriate.

You have just begun a new stage in your career—you have been hired to be the Human Resources (HR) Manager for Berkley Innovative Technologies. Upon meeting the CEO, she described how the company’s workforce demographics have changed substantially over the past two decades. Previous HR managers, along with many supervisors, have mostly been Caucasian males ranging in age between 50s and early 60s, and typically from a Judeo-Christian background. The CEO also indicated that workplace strife has been steadily increasing, and her team is concerned that it may be related to the changing demographics in the workforce.

The CEO has tasked you with creating an educational manual to be utilized in training the existing front-line supervisors. This will be followed with sensitivity training to help all employees understand the complexities of the changing workforce and what it means for the future.

Diversity Training Manual: Part I (2–3 pages)

Part I of the training manual should address the following:

  • Title page
  • Table of contents
  • Part I is to be titled: Introduction to Diversity and Demographics in the Workforce
  • Begin your manual with a brief explanation of each form of discrimination (religion, race, gender, age, and immigrant vs. native-born) as it relates to the workplace.
  • Part 1 will conclude with information on the sections below regarding the demographics of the U.S. population:
    • Sections:
      • Current statistics
      • Recent trends
      • Forecasted trends
    • Information for this question can be located using some or all of the Web sites listed below. You are not limited to the resources provided and may use additional outside materials for this section if needed. Be sure to properly cite all work.
  • Then, address the following information as it relates to diversity in the workforce:
    • The customs and values of 2 of the largest minority races or religions in the workforce (e.g., the dramatic increase in the Hispanic and Muslim percentage of the workforce)
    • The need for sensitivity to their differing values and customs
    • Legislation affecting supervisor regulations relating to these groups

Diversity Training Manual: Part II (1–2 pages)

As the new HR Manager, you are now ready to complete the next section of the diversity training manual that is targeted at making your workforce supervisors more aware of current racial diversity issues, explaining how the supervisors should address them. The goal of this section is to supply information to reduce potential tensions in the workplace among a racially diverse body of employees.

Part II is to be titled: Historical Issues of Different Races in the Workplace and How to Handle Them

  • This section should discuss the following:
    • Racial diversity in the workforce now and how it will look in the future, based on the U.S. population’s racial demographic changes
    • Specific issues that create tensions in the workplace between different groups
    • How leaders and supervisors need to address these potential issues
      • Potential areas of focus for this part could include, but are not limited to, the following:
        • Adopting a more diverse definition of diversity
        • Using technology such as AI to avoid unconscious bias
        • Sourcing candidates with nontraditional credentials
        • Testing diversity initiatives with data
        • Standardizing the interview process to reduce bias

Diversity Training Manual: Part III (2–3 pages)

The CEO indicated that gender issues are also of great concern for her in moving the company forward. With an overwhelming amount of men at the company, she wants to avoid any potential gender issues when writing job requirements, hiring employees, and interactions in the workplace. For this section, specifically address these 3 gender issues, and provide suggestions as to how to raise the sensitivity of all supervisors regarding these issues. Be certain to address concerns such as: Can the supervisor hand out work assignments that he or she feels are better suited to different genders? Can he or she write a job requirement that only one gender can meet, such as a strength requirement?

Part III is to be titled: Overcoming Gender Issues in the Workforce

  • This section of the manual must, at a minimum, address the following information:
    • A few general facts about the U.S. population’s gender mix and the gender mix found in notable segments of the workforce
      • Make sure to include all sources of information.
    • Address the 3 gender issues raised by the CEO, and provide suggestions on how to raise the sensitivity of all supervisors regarding these issues.
    • The essence and applicability of the landmark Griggs v. Duke Power case dealing with stated job requirements should be addressed
      • Click here to read the Griggs v. Duke Power case.
    • Describe state minimum job requirements when requesting new employees to be hired into the department
    • Explain how the supervisor might communicate to his or her department (of all male employees) when a female is about to become part of the work team
