1.)Cyber attacks can be very scary for businesses and even people because virtually anyone can be affected and in many different ways. This specific case is very interesting and I found it to be quite unreal. So two guys from Russia were brought to the United States for their alleged “cyber hacking” skills and they thought it was a great opportunity to become U.S citizens. In my opinion, I believe that in this situation the U.S government should not have to go through any processes to obtain this kind of data. I could see a search warrant being valid, but it seems the government was able to get a confession from them in an interview. The willingly came out with this information and therefore they need to be punished for their cyber crimes. Since the hackers are from Russia, they do not necessarily have the same protections as a US citizen, however, they should still be able to go through a trial here. Unfortunately, they came right out and confessed to their crimes so there really is no more legit type of evidence then that. The trial would be quick, but we can’t just throw them in jail.

In my personal opinion, I believe that the US government is somewhat effective in apprehending cyber criminals. Since this crime is so hard to prosecute because there are so many ways for hackers to hide themselves. It is up to the FBI to get as much evidence as possible so they can prosecute. Internationally, there are so many more rules and laws that the government has to follow and that makes it even harder to prosecute. So in this specific case, I think the US government did a great job of bringing these cyber criminals to justice for what they did against us. There are so many different hackers around the world and we will never catch all of them, but we can do as much as possible to bring as many people to justice who deserve it.

2.)

  1. What process should the government have to obtain access to this kind of data? The process that the government should have obtained to get access to this kind of data was to get a warrant for search and seizures. They also needed to communicate with the Russian authorities.
  2. Should the government be required to obtain a search warrant, and should the defendant be given legal protections? In my perspective, the government should not be required to obtain a search warrant, there was already evidence that the two suspect having been conducting illegal activities in the united states even if it was done remotely in another country. The defendants should not be given legal protections, they were well aware that their actions were illegal, they were more interested in the monetary gain they were going to get, instead of the consequences behind their actions.
  3. In your opinion, is U.S. law enforcement effective in apprehending cyber criminals? In my opinion, the U.S. law enforcement is still working on strategies on how to apprehend cyber crimes, cyber crimes is a relatively new phenomenon. In this specific case, the strategy that was used was a good one. Some might think that they practically tricked the two suspect into coming into the U.S. to them arrest them, in my opinion, that was the only way to make these two criminals pay for their crimes.
