Communications Question

Purpose:

This paper is about the various aspects of cultural identity that shape you, your communication, and behavior. This is not to be an autobiography of your family, but rather an investigation in to the beliefs, values, and norms that you have come to understand as a member of your culture and co-cultures.

Instructions:

  1. Using content from chapters 5 and 6 and using information from the module discussion on identity, consider and reflect upon your own cultural identity.
  2. Write a paper that meets the guidelines listed below.

Paper Guidelines:

  1. 3-5 pages, double spaced, 11 or 12-point font
  2. Address the following components:
    • Cultural identity
      • What is the culture you predominantly belong to?
      • What is typical of most members of your culture? (Apply the most relevant of Hofstede’s dimensions, pp. 110-117)
      • Describe two or more worldviews of your culture? (Apply Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s Value Orientations pp. 118-121). Explain.
    • Social identity
      • What are the groups that you belong to?
      • What are some of the values, beliefs, norms, and expectations of members in the groups to which you belong?
      • How has your membership in these groups shaped your communication?
      • Personal identity
        • What makes you unique and not common of those in the groups to which you belong?
        • What are the specific ways in which you see yourself?
        • Finally, consider and answer this question: How do your identities and experiences give you strengths and weaknesses as a sensitive/understanding intercultural communicator?
      1. Include citations/references to Introducing Intercultural Communication and any other sources you consult in the construction of this paper. This means you must also include a reference page that is in APA format.
