1) Identify a research topic (choreographer, dancer, genre/style, or dance issue)
2) Narrow down what aspect within your topic you are interested in. For
example:
a. “Ballet” is too broad. Consider instead “Africanist aesthetic influences

century ballet” or “The shifting aesthetic of
the ballet body in 21

century ballet”
b. “Martha Graham” is too broad. Consider instead “The use of Greek
Mythology and metaphor in Graham’s work” or “A case study
analyzing the legacy of early modern dance pioneer dance companies
such as the Martha Graham Dance company.
3) Locate two sources utilizing the database and collection available in the
library. (One journal or essay and one book. No blog or informal web source)
4) Summarize the sources in formal paragraph form, (see article abstracts for
examples) and
specify how they support your topic research
. (For example,
if your topic is how the choreographic legacy of how Lester Horton shaped
the development of modern dance in America, sources should be directly
relatable to this aspect of dance history.)
