Or…Which comes first, An expanding economy brings more business and therefore employment -or – When business hires more employees the economy grows?

All we seem to hear lately is that businesses must hire in order to see unemployment decrease so we can all get jobs. But why would business hire more workers unless their customers had jobs so they could afford to buy the goods and services they provide? It seems to me that every time a business hires a new employee its profits would go down. Isn’t the purpose of business to make a profit? 

Let’s keep our discussions to the local economy. How many people are in our workforce? How many people are unemployed? What types of business do we need? What industries currently support our local economy?
