engineer assignment
1. Based on the text “Drilling Down” http://wtf.tw/ref/tainter_patzek.pdf and Lecture 7 (part 1 and 2), please answer the following: (1) How can such a disaster (as the Deepwater Horizon) lead to improvements in engineering, policy and operations in the fossil fuel industry? (2) How might it affect our search for energy? (3) What specifically were the human factors, including ethical/values-related issues involved in this disaster? (at least a total of 500 words for all three questions)
2. Also, please give another example (one related to class discussions or another you look up) of how society’s need for energy is driving the development of increasingly complex ways to find, generate, store or deliver energy. (at least 500 words – and you must address the following three points!).
a. What risks do you see associated with this technology?
b. How can you relate the risks associated with your choice of technologies to the concept of ethics and values in engineering design – as discussed in Lecture 7, part II, and also in the posted chapter on Value Sensitive Design under documents?
c. How can engineers help to lessen these risks – or are the risks too great in your opinion?
Please include references/images.
3. You should also add a brief reflection on the assignment which focuses on how you feel this assignment relates to your major, other coursework, etc. as well as anything which stands out in what you have learned from this assignment.
