Final Essay
After reading Nalo Hopkinson’s Brown Girl in the Ring you are asked to write an essay. Please select only ONE of the topics listed below:
- Why does Hopkinson have illegal drug use in her novel? Meaning, how does she describe the effect that it has on residents of “The Burn?†Why do people use “Buff?†Why aren’t they resistant to it? What does drug use and addiction say about the residents of “The Burn?†What does “Buff†resemble in our culture?
- Why does Hopkinson choose Toronto, Canada as the location for her novel? Perhaps there are stereotypes that we have come to believe about Canada that she wants us to think about. Do you think Hopkinson wants readers to think differently about Canada? If so why, if not why?
- How does Hopkinson compare and differentiate imprisonment and discrimination? Throughout the novel Ti-Jeanne and the residents of “The Burn†are confined to their neighborhood. How does this limitation in mobility effect the residents? How does constraint resemble previous works that we have read? How does Hopkinson’s description of confinement shape your understanding of the lack of space, mobility, and the ability to imagine? How does their confinement reflect historical and contemporary events in world history?
- How does Hopkinson use folklore and myth to shape her novel? Why does she incorporate Yoruba deities and the Soucouyant? Why are these mythic/supernatural characters included in a novel that is set in the future?
Remember, your essay needs to be at least 3-4 pages in length. You must have examples from the text. Failure to use examples and give adequate details from the examples will lower your grade.
